The quality and quantity of water is essential for survival of life and industrial growth. Phthalate esters have become widespread contaminants in the aquatic environment, because of their extensive use as non reactive plasticizer in plastic industry. The aim of this study was to determine the contamination level of phthalate esters in surface water collected from city area of Lucknow, India. The presence of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), di-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-octyl phthalate (DOP) were determined in 30 water samples. Identification and quantification of phthalates were performed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and confirmation by using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometer (GC-MS). LOD and LOQ for each phthalate were also calculated and found in the range 0.1-0.5 μg/l and 0.3-1.6 μg/l respectively while percentage recovery of method was 70-90%. Maximum number of samples (80%) screened were found to be contaminated with phthalates. The mean level of total phthalates present in water samples was 0.47 μg/l. The DEHP was found in maximum number of samples and DOP was the least detected phthalate. The study reveals that quantities of phthalates obtained were not alarming to human health as their values are quite below than the recommended values given by international regulatory agencies in surface water.

Essential oil of Origanum vulgare Linn collected from Kothi (2500m), Himachal Pradesh was analyzed using GC and GC-MS. The air dried aerial part of the plant during flowering yielded 1.1% essential oil. Twenty three compounds were identified, constituted 94% of the oil. The major constituent was thymol (61.8%), followed by p-cymene (8.6) and 3-octanone (7.6). This is a new chemotype of O. vulgare.

The GC of the oil revealed the presence of 50 components. Thirty four components were identified representing 87.2% of the oil. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons constituted the major part (76.3%). -caryophyllene (27.7), germacrene-D (19.0), -amorphene (6.5) were the major constituents.

The inhibition effect of Ipomoea carnea plant extract on the corrosion of mild steel has been investigated by weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. Potentiodynamic polarization study indicated that the plant extracts behave as mixed-type inhibitors. The corrosion rates of the steel and inhibition efficiencies of the extracts were calculated. The results obtained showed that the extract solution of the plant could serve as an effective inhibitor for the corrosion of steel in sulphuric acid media. The corrosion inhibition efficiency increases on increasing plant extract concentration.

A selective method has been developed for the extraction chromatographic studies of Al (III) with SRS-100 (liquid cation exchanger) coated on silica gel as stationary phase. Quantitative extraction of Al(III) has been achieved from acetate buffer across the pH range 5.5-6.5. The effects of pH, eluting agent and flow-rate, on extraction and elution behaviour of aluminum have been investigated. Exchange capacity of the exchanger at different temperatures with respect to Al(III) has also been determined. Al(III) has been separated from synthetic multi-component mixtures containing various metal ions by exploiting the differences in pH for extraction or by using selective eluents. The method permits sequential separation of Al(III), Ga(III), In(III) and TI(III). The proposed method is simple, rapid and selective.

The values of surface tension (γ, mN m^-1) and viscosity (η, N s m^-2) of methanol, ethanol, glycerol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, diethyl ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon tetrachloride [CCl₄], tetrahydrofuran [THF], dimethylformamide [DMF], dimethylsulfoxide [DMSO], acetronitrile and formic acid were measured with survismeter and compared with the data obtained with the aid of Ubbehold viscometer and stalagmometer respectively. The deviations in viscosity and surface tension data were ± 1.1 x 10^-5 N s m^-2 and ± 1.3 x 10^-2 mN m^-1 respectively. The survismeter used for viscous flow time (t, sec) and drop number (n) measurements was 2-in-1. The t and n values were used to determine friccohesity, a new physicochemical parameter for analysis of frictional and cohesive forces and dipole moment of molecules.

The volatile compounds of peel of C. sinensis were analyzed at three ripening stages by headspace GC and GC-MS. It was observed that ripe fruit contain 85% (HSS-GC) D-limonene, while the fruit under successive stages of ripening showed 35 to 76 % D-limonene.

A very simple and selective H-Point standard addition method (HPSAM) has been developed for the simultaneous determination of Fe²⁺ and Zn²⁺ using 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN), in Tween-20 micellar- media. Fe²⁺ and Zn²⁺ form coloured complexes with PAN in the pH range 5.0-10.5 that are insoluble in water but get solubilized in Tween-20 mid therefore extraction with organic solvents is not required. Formation of these two complexes was completed within 2 mill at pH 9.2. The linear concentration range is 0.055-0.84 μg/ml for Fe²⁺ and 0.01-0.82 μg/ml for Zn²⁺. To investigate the selectivity of the method effect of diverse ions on the determination of Fe²⁺ and Zn²⁺ was also studied. The recommended procedure was applied for the determination of Fe²⁺ and Zn²⁺ in water and alloy samples.

A direct method has been developed for the spectrophotometeric determination of Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) using sodium-1-menthyl-1-propylthioxanthate as a complexing reagent in the micellar media. Each metal complex was stable for more than 24 h under optimized conditions. Beer's law was obeyed over the range of 0.49-1.95 μg/ml for Ni(II), 0.29-2.3 μg/ml for Co(II) and 0.79-6.35 μg/ml for Cu(II). Sandell's sensitivity and molar absorptivity have been found to be 0.0066 μg/cm² and 9.36 x 10⁴ Lmol^-1 cm^-1 for Ni(II), 0.0024 μg/cm² and 2.5 x 10⁴ Lmol^-1 cm^-1 for Co(II) and 0.0098 μg/cm² and 6.8 x 10⁴ Lmol^-1 for Cu(II). The effect of various diverse ions has been studied and above method has been applied for the determination of Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) in alloys, environmental and water samples. The developed method has been found to be quite simple, rapid, sensitive and reproducible. The precision (RSD<1.5%) and the accuracy obtained were satisfactory.

The corrosion behaviour of brass (70Cu:30Zn) in 0.5 M NaCl solution and the effect of benzotriazole, ammonia and sulphide have been studied by cyclic voltammetry and polarization method. The copper dissolution takes place through the formation of CuCl, since the anodic reaction order with respect to Cl^- is one. The addition of benzotriazole did not affect the formation of cuprous chloride film, but decrease the copper dissolution reaction. The formation of cuprous chloride and its protective range have been found to be unaffected by the addition of ammonia. But the addition of sulphide broke down the cuprous chloride.

The oil contained germcrene-D (9.05%), iso-eugenol (7.36), heneicisane (7.19), 9-nonadecane (6.88), geranial (6.27), α-pinene (5.24), tricosane (5.07), and β-caryophyllene (3.05) as major constituents among the 65 identified compounds. The 20% dilution of essential oil was found to be most effective against the Xenthomonas comprestis.

The effect of various parameters such as pH, concentration of dye, Fe³⁺ don and additives, amount of H₂O₂ and light intensity on the rate of photodegradation has been examined. A tentative mechanism for the reaction has been proposed.

The pH values varied from 5.2 to 8.6. The values of calcium ranged from 7 to 521 mg/100g and magnesium from 6.1 to 304.6 mg/100g. The samples had low values of orgnic matter.

The effects of different acids with varying concentrations, stripping agents, flow rate on extraction and elution have been investigated. Fe(III) has been separated from the binary, ternary, and quaternary mixture of various metal ions. Selective separation of Fe(III) has been achieved from most of the common transition metals. The proposed method is simple, rapid and selective.

Fluoride is an accumulative poison at high dose of intake for humans and animals. In the study, the sorption of fluoride from aqueous solution has been investigated on synthetic hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), hydrous zirconium oxide (HZO) and hydrous zirconium(IV)-iron(III) oxide (HZFO) by batch mode experiments. Both HFO and HZFO were crystalline and HZO was amorphous in nature. The parametes studied were the effect of pH and sorption equilibriums. The results showed increase in fluoride-sorption with increasing pH from nearly 2.0 to 5.0, 4.6 and 6.8 for HFO, HZO and HZFO, respectively. Analysis of temperature dependent sorption data obtained at equilibrium solution pH 6.8 (± 0.2) has been described by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Redlich-Peterson isotherm model equations. The present sorption data fit, in general, found very well with the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson models; and the data fit for HZFO and HFO found to increase, but for HZO the data found to decrease with increasing temperature. The computed thermody-namic parameters such as ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° from the Langmuir equilibrium constant (b, L/mg) values show that the fluoride-sorption on HZFO was more spontaneous and endothermic process compared to HFO. The ΔH°value obtained for fluoride adsorption on HZO indicates exothermic nature.

The essential oils, obtained by hydro-distillation of the leaf and stem bark of Cinnamomum tamala Nees., grown at Baghchung area of Jorhat, Assam were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Twenty four and twenty five components, representing 99.34 and 89.54% of the total leaf and stem bark oils were identified, respectively. Eugenol (70.6%) was the major component in the leaf oil, while a terpineol (47.2) followed by p-cymene (9.7) were the major components in the stem bark oil. These findings on comparison with those reported for the stem bark essential oil of C. tamala, revealed the natural existence of one more chemotype source for the species.

CU(II) salicylate reacts with various N-donors in organic medium (ethanol) to give solid complexes having general formula [Cu {O₂C(OH)R}₂L₂] where R = C₆H₄, L = 3 and 4- CNPy; α, β and γ-picoline; 3,4- and 3,5-lutidine and isoquinoline. The complexes are mononuclear with 1:2 stoichiometry and possess a trans-distorted octahedral structure in which the salicylate group acts as uninegative anionic bidenate ligand through phenolic and carboxyl oxygens. Complexes of 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 stoichiometry were also obtained by the interaction of Cu(II) sulphosalicylate with various heterocyclic amines like methylpyridines, ethylpridines, cyanopyridines, isoquinoline and morpholine in ethanol medium. The complexes are paramagnetic. The heterocyclic ligands coordinate through their nitrogen atom.

Eight complexes of Ni(II), Mn(II) and Cr(III) were prepared. Five Ni(II) complexes, two Mn(II) complexes & one Cr(III) complex. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic measurement, UV-vis and IR spectral studies. Complexes are [Ni(en)₂](NO₃)₂ (1), [Ni(o-aminobenzoate)₂] (2), [Ni(NCS)₂(en)] (3), [Ni(SCN)₂(en)] (4), [Ni(o-aminobenzoate)(O₂)] (5), [Cr(en)₂(O₂)] (6), [Mn(o-aminobenzoate)₃] (7), [Mn(o-aminobenzoate)₂(O₂)] (8). Formation of peroxo complexes take place, when both monodentate and bidentate ligand mixed with a metal salt followed by the addition of H₂O₂, but no peroxo complexes formed when only bidentate ligand presents. One reason might be that peroxo ligand could easily replace monodentate ligand SCN, but not bidentate ligand ethylenediamine and o-aminobenzoic acid. 1N-Phenyl-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-5-phenyl-2-pyrazoline has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis and X-ray single crystal diffraction studies. Density functional calculations have been carried out for the compound by using B3LYP method at 6-311G* basis set. The calculated results show that the predicted geometry resembles the structural parameters. The electronic absorption spectra calculated in gas phase are better than those calculated in EtOH solvent to model the experimental electronic spectra and the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analyses suggest that the above electronic transitions are mainly assigned to <112> → π* transitions. On the basis of vibrational analyses, the thermodynamic properties of the compound at different temperature have been calculated, revealing the correlations between C⁰p, m, S⁰ra and temperature.

Porous perovskite-type complex oxides LaCoO₃ and La_0.95Sr_0.05Ni_0.05Co_0.95O₃ were produced by combustion method. The properties of these porous materials such as crystal structures, particle sizes, surface patterns, pore size, surface area and pore volume were characterized by X-ray diffraction( XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and BET measurements. The results indicated that all porous materials are of the perovskite-type complex oxides. Doping Sr²⁺ ions on site A and doping Ni²⁺ ions on site B entered the crystal lattices of LaCoO₃ in the place of La³⁺ and Co³⁺, respectively, and the maximum peak of XRD patterns of doping sample was weaken and broaden. Morphological microscopy demonstrated agglomerates involved mostly thin smooth flakes and layers perforated by a large number of pores and its lamella decreased with the introduction of Sr²⁺ and Ni²⁺. Hysteresis loop in the N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm of samples indicated its porous structures and the doping effect on its pore size, surface area and pore volume were improved. The porous catalysts have been tested for methane catalytic combustion and the results showed that these catalysts possessed high catalytic activity.

Cu(II) complexes are binucleating, EPR-studies provide support for a weak magnetic exchange infraction between the two copper (II) ions via the ligand bridge. Both Cu_A and Cu_B- have different stereochemistry as revealed by physical studies.

The aqueous reaction of [Mg(H₂O)₆]Cl₂ with the in situ generated sodium salt of 4-nitro-benzoic acid (4-nbaH) and N-methylimidazole (N-MeIm) results in the formation of the dinuclear complex [Mg(H₂O)(N-MeIm)₂(4-nba)₂]₂ 1 (4-nba = 4-nitro benzoate), while the direct reaction of [Mg(H₂O)₆]Cl₂ with sodium 4-nba leads to the formation of the mononuclear complex, [Mg(H₂O)₆](4-nba)₂-2H₂O 2. In the centrosymmetric dimer 1, each Mg atom is coordinated to an aquo ligand, two monodentate N-MeIm ligands and a monodentate 4-nba ligand. The second 4-nba ligand functions as a bridging bidentate ligand, linking the metal centers and completes the hexacoordination around each Mg(II). The dimeric molecules of 1 are linked into a one-dimensional chain along b with the aid of intra- as well as intermo-lecular H-bonding interactions between the coordinated water and the free oxygen atom of the monodentate 4-nba ligand. In the mononuclear complex [Mg(H₂O)₆](4-nba)₂-2H₂O 2, the Mg(II) is located on an inversion center and its structure consists of an octahedral [Mg(H₂O)₆]^{2+dication, a free uncoordinated 4-nba anion and a lattice water molecule. The formation and stability of mixed ligand complexes (MLA) containing PFA, Ni(II) or Cd(II) and a second ligand (A) = 2,2'-Bipyridyl, 1,10-phenanthroline, Dipyridyl amine, Ethylene diamine, Oxalic acid, Malonic acid were studied. The stability of the mixed ligand complexes and the corresponding binary complexes were quantitatively compared in terms of the parameters Δlog K. The influence of the nature of the two ligands L and A on the stability of the mixed ligand complexes are discussed and pH metal species distribution profiles for some selected systems are graphically represented. The configurations possible for the Ni(II) and Cd(II) complexes were evaluated using the semi-empirical and the density functional theory calculations respectively. PM 3, a semi-empirical self-consistent method, was employed to obtain the 3D - geometries and relative energies of the possible isomers of Ni(II) complexes. The most stable structure among the possible ones is adjudged as the most probable structure. The antiviral activity of PFA is attributed to its ability to form stable binary and mixed ligand complexes.}

The aim of this study was a spectrophotometrical determination of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (LABS) as an anionic surfactant in liquid detergent by multivariate calibration. One of the powerful tools in multivariate calibration is the partial least squares method (PLS), which was used for analysis of LABS in the 0.01-0.025 (g/ml) concentration range. Absorbance data of the calibration standards were taken between 200-600 nm with a UV-vis spectrometer. These spectral data and concentrations were used as inputs and outputs of the model, respectively. In the other step, first order derivative spectra were considered as inputs of the model and the parameters of the model were tested. For achieving the best parameters of the model in each step errors were calculated as RMSECV values. Relative errors of less than 3% for the zero and first derivative spectral data sets were obtained.

Catalytic effect of Brij-35 micelle has been observed on the rate of oxidation. The reactions show first order, fractional order and zero-order dependence of rate with respect to chloramine-T, vitamins and HClO₄, respectively. The mechanism in absence as well as in presence of surfactant has been proposed. The speetrophotometric evidence supports the binding/association between chloramine-T and Brij-35 micelle. The kinetic data have also been rationalised in terms of Monger and Portnoy's kinetic model and binding parameters have been evaluated.

Using these data, free energy of mixing, solvation number and different polymer-solvent interaction parameters for the solution systems have been calculated to know the presence of molecular interactions in the system. The trends in the variation of the solution property parameters indicate the existence of positive molecular interactions between the polymer and the solvent in solutions. The results also show the presence of higher degree of interaction between PVP and DMF in solution compared to CAB and DMF.

Isomerization of all-trans-β-carotene occurs during shaking with 0.5% of titanium tetrachlo-ride catalyst in methylene chloride at room temperature. In the present study we compared two types of columns CI8 and C30 and various solvent systems for the separation of β-carotene and its cis isomers by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results showed that β-carotene isomers were resolved by employing a C30 column with a mobile phase of methanol (100%) (A) and methylene chloride (100%) (B) under a gradient elution condition. A total of eleven cis isomers and one all-frans-β-carotene isomer were resolved within 50 min at a flow rate of 1 ml/min and detection wave-length of 470 nm.

Istin-3- thiosemicarbazone acts as a powerful chelating agent coordinating through the oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur atoms of carbonyl, azomethine and thioketo groups respectively. Various anions such as acetate, lactate, nitrate, perchlorate, sulphate and thiocyanate act as secondary ligands by coordinating to the metal ion. Mixed ligand complexes with dimethyl sulfoxide and diphenyl thiourea have also been synthesized and characterized. The ligand and some of the complexes were assessed for their antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coll, Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans.

The complexes were octahedral structures. The prepared compounds were screened for their antifungal activity against A. niger and C. albicans.
