A new class of unsymmetrical organotitanium(lV) and organozirconium(IV) complexes of biologically potent ligands derived from heterocyclic ketones and semicarbazide hydrochloride and 2-hydroxy-N-phenyl benzamide have been prepared by the microwave irradiations. The ligands act in monobasic bidentate manner with N∩OH and O∩OH as donor systems. The ligands and the resulting complexes of the type Cp₂M(OO) (N∩O) (where M represents titanium or zirconium) are characterized by the elemental analysis, conductance measurements, molecular weight determinations and spectral studies. On the basis of the electronic, IR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectral studies, octahedral geometry has been proposed for the resulting complexes. The isolated products are coloured solids, soluble in methanol. DMF, DMSO and THF. A comparative study has been made between microwave assisted synthesis and the thermal synthesis. All the complexes and their parent ligands have been screened against a number of microbes and discussed with positive findings.

Compound 3 when treated with hydrazine hydrate gave 5(3-furyl-2-yl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol -4-yl)-3-(2-hydroxy phenyl)-4,5-dihydro-pyrazolines 4. Compound 3 when treated with catalytic amount of iodine in DMSO to get 2(3-furyl-2-yl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl) chromones 5 and with CuCL₂ in DMSO to get 2(3-furyl-2-yl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-3-chloro chromones 6. Products obtained are characterized by IR, ¹HNMR and mass spectra. Some of the compounds 5 are screened for their antimicrobial activity.

The spectral result suggests that ligand coordinated to the metal ions through carboxylate (COO) and amino (NH₂) groups. The results obtained herein reports the complexes of formula [M(C₆H₁₀NO₂S)₂]. [M = Co(II), Ni(II) or Cu(II)]. The complexes shows higher antibacterial activity and dissolution rate than the free Deoxylliin.

N-alkyl phthalyl benzimidazoles (IV) were synthesized by treating o-phenylene diamine with N-phthalyl substituted amino acids (III). These were subjected to Mannich reaction using formaldehyde and ammonium chloride giving the Mannich base i.e. N-alkyl phthayl-1 -amino methyl benzimidazoles (V). Reaction with appropriate aromatic aldehydes under anhydrous conditions yielded the Schiff bases (VI). Subsequent cyclisation with thioglycollic acid in 1,4-dioxane gave the title compounds. These compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity in vitro. Some of the thiazolidinones were found to be active.

Poly N-Vinylcarbazole (PVK) is one of the most often used polymer host materials for optoelectronic devices based on molecularly doped systems, due to its good film forming properties, relatively high hole mobility, and large highest-occupied molecular orbital, lowest unoccupied-molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO). Since pure PVK has poor electron-transporting properties¹'. Presents an important synthesis of a lot of monomers of alkenyl carbazole unsubstituted and substituted in pendent carbazolic group. These monomers are synthesised, in order to put other functions, to polymerise them and to use them in making charge transfer complexes materials. The N-alkenylcarbazole having a short aliphatic chain has been polymerised before², with a great difficulty; either by radical, anionic or by Ziegler-Natta systems. The less activity of N-Allyl carbazole is due to the steric effects and to its deficiency in stability by resonance. Aiming to enhance the reactivity of the monomers, it introduced some substituents, attractor of electrons; aiming by this to diminish the influence of the carbazolic group on the double bonds of the aliphatic chain and hopping that will obtain polymers that manifests some photoelectric activities.

Molecular conformer (E_conf) and crystal lattice energy (U_latt) contributions are of comparable magnitude in crystal structures of flexible molecules. Bond torsion variations about C-C single bonds are worth 1-3 kcal mol^-1 and hydrogen bonds, intermolecular interactions have energy of 1-10 kcal mol^-1. Both these energy factors should be considered in calculating the total crystal energy (E_total) of organic crystalline solids. Intra- and intermolecular contributions may be additive or cancel one another. Polymorphism is likely in molecular systems wherein molecular conformer and crystal energy effects compensate one other, i.e. a metastable conformer resides in a stable packing arrangement or a stable rotamer is present in a metastable crystal environment. Organic conformational polymorphs are found to be promiscuous in a small energy window of < 3 kcal mol^-1. Polymorph clusters having different number of symmetry-independent molecules in the unit cell are discussed and their phase transformations monitored by variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The final section deals with polymorphism in Pharmaceuticals and the need to know the most stable polymorph of drug molecules.

While compound 3 on stirring with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in presence of KOH afforded 2-hydroxyphenyl (1-(4-pyridin-2-ylbenzyl)-1 H-pyrazol-4-yl)methanone oxime 4. Compound 4 on heating in POCI₃ gave 2-(1-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)benzyl)-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)benzo[d]oxazole 5. Compound 1 on condensation with 6 in dry pyridine gave 3-(2-(6-chloro-7-methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)vinyl)-4H-chromen-4-one 7. All compounds have been characterized by IR, ¹H NMR and mass spectral studies. These compounds are tested for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

The dc-polarography and cyclic voltammetry of some arylhydrazone derivatives of pyrazolone were measured in Britton-Robinson buffer series of pH 2-12. The results of dc-polarography indicated that all hydrazone compounds were reduced undergo an irreversible 4-electron reduction wave leading to the cleavage of the N-N bond and saturation of the C=N centre. The voltammograms recorded at different scan rates exhibited one cathodic peak. The E_1/2and E_p shifted to more negative potential with increasing the pH. A mechanism for the electrode reaction was suggested. The effect of substituents on the reduction mechanism and the kinetic parameters were calculated and discussed.

A simple, reliable and rapid method for preconcentration and determination of lead using octadecyl bonded silica membrane disk impregnated with Isopropyl 2-[(isopropoxy carbothioyljdisulfanyljethane thioate and flame atomic absorption spectrometry is presented. The effect of potential interfering ions, pH, ligand amount, stripping solvent, and sample flow rate were also investigated. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the break-through volume was found to about 1000mL providing a preconcentration factor of 500. The maximum capacity of the disks was found to be 382± 4 μg for Pb(II). The limit of detection of the proposed method is 5 ng per 1000 mL. The method was applied to the extraction and recovery of Pb(II) in different water samples. In this method the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) is 0.4%.

Experimental results of the study on the effect of variation of temperature by the Polymeric flocculants (HPAM, and Truefloc) on the flocculation of East Busseriya, Sudamdih and Ramgarh coals of Jharia coalfields are reported. These results suggest that temperature greatly affects the flocculation behaviour of coalfields as evidence by lower settling rates at higher temperature. Variation in temperature alters the intrinsic viscosity of the polymer, due to which settling rate also changes. The intrinsic viscosity of the polymer is a function of pH. Consequent to the change in viscosity due to change in pH. The setting rate is affected considerably. The optimum pH of the flocculant for maximum settling due to highest intrinsic viscosity is in neutral medium at pH 7.0. The results of flocculation of coal particles have been explained on the basis of the bridging mechanism.

A selective method has been developed for the extraction chromatographic separation of Ga(III) with SRS-100 (liquid cation exchanger) coated on silanised silica gel. Its quantitative extraction has been achieved in 2.5 h from 0.1 M acetate buffer (pH 5.5-6.5). The effects of pH, flow-rate and stripping agents on extraction and elution have been investigated. Exchange capacity of the prepared exchanger at different temperatures with respect to Ga(III) has been determined. Breakthrough capacity and preconcentration factor at different pH values have been investigated. The effect of pH on R_f in ion exchange paper chromatography has also been investigated. Ga(III) has been separated from its synthetic binary and multi-component mixtures containing various metal ions as are found in ores and alloy samples. The method effectively permits sequential separation of Ga(III) from synthetic quaternary mixtures containing its congeners Al(III), In(III) and Tl(III). A plausible mechanism for the extraction of Ga(III) is also suggested.

The reaction conditions were optimized for the determination of above compounds in micrograms quantities by differential pulse voltammetry, analytical utility of this investigation is also highlighted.

The complexes with general formula [ML₂ (H₂O)₂]Cl₂ (where M=Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), L=ferrocenyl substituted pyrazole) have been obtained and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, conductance measurements, magnetic moment, molecular weight determination, TGA, spectral data (¹H NMR, IR, UV, electronic analysis) and ESR. The ligands and their metal complexes have been evaluated for antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi viz. Alternaria alternata and Colletotrichum capsicum at 37°C and for antibacterial activity against gram negative Escherichia coli at 28°C. Of the metal complexes tested for peroxidase activity, only (Cu, Fe) complexes are found to be active.

DMF) (where M = Cu (II), Co (II), Cd (II), Zn (II), UO₂ (VI)) ; [PS-LZr (OH)₂(CH₃COO). 2DMF] ; [PS-LNi (CH₃COO).3DMF] ; [PS-LFeCI₂,2DMF] AND [PS - LMoO₂(acac)] (Where acacH = acetylacetone). These metal bound polymers have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, reflectance spectral and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The shifts of the v(C=N) (azomethine), v(C-O) (phenolic) stretches have been followed to determine the ON donor behaviour of PS-LH. The polystyrene-anchored copper (II) and coba't (II) compounds are paramagnetic and have square planar structure; nickel (II) and iron (III) coordination compounds are paramagnetic and have octahedral structure ; cadmium (II) and zinc (II) compounds are diamagnetic and have tetrahedral structure ; dioxomolybdenum (VI) and dioxouranium (VI) and diamagnetic and have octahedral structure. [PS-LZr(OH)₂(CH₃COO).2DMF] is diamagnetic showing pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. All the metal bound polymers are magnetically dilute in nature.

These compounds have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, spectral (infrared, reflectance and electron spin resonance) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. I behaves as dibasic tridentate (ONO donor) ligand in the above compounds. [PSCH₂ - LM.DMF] [where, M = Zn (II), Cd (II), MoO₂ (VI), UO₂(VI)] and [PSCH₂ - LZr(OH₂).2DMF] are diamagnetic, while others are paramagnetic. Cyclic voltammetry and potential modulated reflectance techniques have been used to study the growth of surface films on iron electrodes in alkaline solution. There are still uncertainties about the structure of the passive film or iron. In this article, it is possible to clearly see the relationship between electrode potential and the change of the surface layer structure - particularly when using modulation spectroscopy. It has been suggested, from the results obtained, that in sweeping from hydrogen evolution to oxygen evolution a number of processes take place, altering the composition of the surface film; the composition of the surface film being a combination of Fe(II), Fe(III) and Fe(VI) in the transpassive region.

Internal energy of liquid methane has been obtained based on the pair-wise additive approximation for the effective pair potential of dense fluids using (12,6) Lennard-Jones model for the intermolccular potential function. This internal energy has been compared with the internal pressure via the equation of state (EoS) expression. Thus, the effective pair potential parameters (EPPP) through some given EoSs for dense fluids have been calculated. A relation between the potential parameters with EoS parameters has been obtained. Using the obtained EPPPs and applying the pair-wise additive approximation, one could calculate accurately the thermodynamics functions such as total energy. The results of such calculations for the total energy of the liquid methane obtained via the EPPPs from different EoSs indicate a good agreement with ihe experimental data. Physical interpretation for the state dependencies of the obtained EPPPs from given EoSs is also presented.

A simple and reproducible method for the rapid extraction and determination of trace amounts of copper(II) ions using octadecyl-bonded silica membrane disks modified by isopropyl 2-isopropoxycarbothioyl)disulfanyl]ethane thioate (IIDE) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry is presented. The method is based on complex formation on the surface of the ENVI-18 DISKT disks followed by stripping of the retained species by minimum amounts of appropriate organic solvents. The elution is efficient and quantitative. The effect of potential interfering ions, pH, ligand amount, stripping solvent, and sample flow rate were also investigated. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the break-through volume was found to about 1000mL providing a preconcentration factor of 500. The maximum capacity of the disks was found to be 425± 4 μg for Cu^{2+. The limit of detection of the proposed method is 4ng per 100mL. The method was applied to the extraction and recovery of copper in different water samples.}

The design and synthesis of figure-eight macrocycles are very scarce owing to the intricacies and lack of predictability from first principles. This review emphasizes on discrete macrocyclic systems both synthetic and natural with a defined figure eight knotted topology. In almost all the helical macrocycles, the helical arrangement is held by intramolecular hydrogen bonding or as a backbone requirement, but in all cases, a planar graph can be drawn and so these compounds are trivial from the topological stand point. Nature presents great deal of complexity in terms of structures in macromolecules like DNA and proteins and also displays intriguing topology in simple natural products. Patellamide, tawicyclamides, nosiheptide and thiostrepton are natural products with figure eight topology which shows interesting biological activity. Expanded porphyrins, Cu(II) complexes of thiomacrocycles, cyclic peptides and oligoesters are synthetic macrocycles showing intriguing topology. Analysis of structure and folding behaviour will enable chemists to design molecules with intriguing topology.

It was observed that the extracted amount of boric acid increased with increasing reaction temperature, decreasing with particle size and decreased with increasing solution concentration, with increasing solid-to-liquid ratios, while it was not affected by stirring speed.

Color stability and UV-Vis spectroscopic studies of stabilized and unstabilized polymeric sheets support the long-term stability behavior of LDHs. A novel plastic poly (vinyl chloride) membrane electrode based on the piroxicam-tungstophosphate ion association as electroactive material for the determination of piroxicam in pure form and in pharmaceutical preparations is developed, in which the plasticizer is di-butyl sebacate (DBS). The linear response covers the range of 1x10^-3-1x10^-6 M drug concentration with a slope of 57.22 mV per decade. The practical pH range is 5-8. Interferences from common cations, alkaloids and drug excipients are reported. The proposed electrode has been successfully applied to determine piroxicam in tablets, injections and suppositories, also content uniformity assay of tablets was monitored. The results are correlated well with those obtained by the PB standard procedure.

Potentiometric studies on azomethine substituted benzanthrone dyes (derivatives of 3-amino benzanthrone containing electron donating groups in ortho or/and para position of the benzene nucleus) [BA1 = o-hydroxy benzaldehyde; BA2 = p-hydroxy benzaldehyde] and its complexes with Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), UO₂(II), La(III) and Zr(IV) have been carried out in different ionic strengths (0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 molar KCI), at different temperatures (298, 303, 308 and 313 K) and in ethanol-water media of varying compositions (50% and 80% VN). The ionization constants of the two ligands and the stability constants of its complexes with the mentioned cations were investigated and discussed. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH and ΔS) were calculated and studied. The ionization constants were found to be increased as the ionic strength and the temperature increased while the stability constants of the complexes increased as the ionic strength and the temperature increased. Also the conductometric titrations have been made to characterize the composition of the stoichiometric complexes formed between the investigated ligands and metal cations. The conductometric results show that the ratio of the metal-ligand are 1:1 and 1:2 which quite agree with the results of potentiometric studies.

The Mn (II), Fe (III), Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II) and Zn (II) mixed ligand complexes have been synthesized by using catechol (L¹) as primary ligand and salicylaldehyde (L²) as secondary ligand. All the prepared complexes were identified and confirmed by elemental analyses (C and H), molar conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility measurements, infrared, electronic absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra. The elemental analysis data suggested that the stoichiometry of the complexes is 1:1:1 [M:L¹:L²] ratio. The molar conductance measurements revealed that the prepared complexes are their non-electrolytic nature. The magnetic susceptibility measurements displayed the presence of a paramagnetic phenomena for Mn (II), Fe (III), Co (II) and Cu (II) complexes and diamagnetic phenomena for Ni (II) and Zn (II) complexes. The infrared spectral data showed the coordination sites of the free ligand with the central metal ion which are through -OH and HC=O groups. The electronic absorption spectral data exhibited the existence of an octahedral geometry for Mn (II), Fe (III) and Co (II) complexes, a square planar geometry for Ni (II) and Cu (II) complexes and tetrahedral geometry for Zn (II) complex. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of Mn (II), Fe (III), Co (II) and Cu (II) complexes showed the existence of paramagnetic phenomena and support their geometrical structures which confirmed by the electronic absorption spectra. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the ligands and their Zn (II) complex displayed the positions of the groups which enter in complexation and this analysis supported the data which obtained from the infrared and electronic spectra. The mass spectra of Fe (III) complex showed the fragmentation process (m/e⁺). The metal salts, ligands and mixed ligand complexes have been screened for antibacterial activity against four strains of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia co//, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumon/ae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

A study of electronic spectra gave evidence about complexation. Shifting in the characteristic infrared absorption bands of the free ligands after complexation indicates the nature of bonding. Thermal data revealed the presence and absence of coordinated water molecule. The molar conductivity in DMF indicates of non-electrolytic behavior of these complexes.

Reactions of the complexes with monochloroacetic acid yield another series of complexes of the type [M(HDBIT)(NO₃)_n].2H₂O and [VO(HDBIT)(SO₄)].2H₂O, where HDB1T is another Schiff's base, 3-(l'-hydroxy-l',4'-diaza-2',3'-dimethyl-1 ',3'-butene-4'-yl)-2-( 1 '-hydroxy-1 ',4'-diaza-2',3'-dimethyl-r,3'-butene-4'-yl)-imino-4-thiazolidinone obtained after cyclization with chloroacetic acid, M= UO2(VI), ZrO(IV) and Th(IV), n=2 for UO₂(VI) and ZrO(IV), n=4 for Th(IV). All the complexes are characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, thermal analysis, molar conuctivity, magnetic moment, electronic, infrared, ¹H NMR and ESR spectral studies. The results indicate that the VO(1V) ion is penta coordinated yielding paramagnetic complexes; UO₂(VI), ZrO(IV) ions are hexa coordinated, whereas Th(IV) ion is octa coordinated yielding diamagnetic complexes of above stoichiometry.

Double aromatic amine addition reaction at a bisacetonitrile complex of ruthenium(III) is reported here. The cationic complex, cis-[(acac)₂Ru(CH₃CN)₂](ClO₄) (1) [acac = acetylacetonate] reacts with aniline in neat to produce an orange bis-amidine complex, [Ru^III(acac)₂{HN=C(Me)NHPh}₂](ClO₄), [2]ClO₄ in 60% yield. X-ray structure of the complex is also reported. The reaction occurs with addition of two equivalents of PhNH₂ across the two coordinated acetonitrile Hgands. Optical spectra and redox properties of the complex have been discussed. It shows a reversible Ru(lll)/Ru(ll) response at -0.6 V and its visible spectrum is dominated by a broad ligand to metal charge transfer at 505 nm.

A rapid and simple method for the extractive separation of molybdenum from commonly interfering elements such as Re(VII), Cr(III,VI), Cu(II), Zr(IV), Mn(II), Ni(II), Fe(II,III), W(VI), U(VI), V(V) and platinum metals using thiocyanate as a complexing agent, is described. The procedure is based on the masking of copper with thiourea and vanadium, niobium, uranium and tungsten with sodium fluoride prior to extraction of Mo(V)-SCN complex from 10 ml aqueous solution containing 1 ml of 2 M KSCN and 1 ml of 5 M H₂SO₄ using 2,2'-dipyridyl in CHCI₃ as the extractant. Molybdenum is back-extracted from the extract with alkaline H₂O₂ solution. After heating the back-extract to boiling, any insoluble hydroxides or traces of co-extracted elements, are filtered off. Only oxalate, acetate, H₂O₂ tin, cobalt, bismuth, titanium, osmium and ruthenium interfered in the method.

Excess molar volumes, deviation in viscosity and isentropic compressibilities of binary mixtures formed by phenylacetonitrile with aliphatic alcohols (1-propanol, 2-propanol. 1-butanol, 2-butanol and 2-methyl-2-propanol) have been evaluated from experimental measurements of density, viscosity and speed of sound at T = 308.15 K. AH the properties have been fitted to the Redlich-Kisler polynomial using multiparametric non-linear regression analysis to estimate the binary coefficients and standard errors. The values of these parameters have been discussed in terms of molecular interactions.

Indometacin is a methylated indole derivative and a member of the arylalkanoic acid class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In this research the inclusion complexation of indomethacin with [β-cyclodextrin was studied and the stability constant (K) of the complex was determined by UV-Visible spectroscopy. The stability constant (K) of the inclusion complex between [3 - cyclodextrin and indomethacin at λmax = 261 nm and 319 nm in phosphate buffer solution with pH 7.4 were determined. The absorbance at λmax = 261 nm and 319 nm by adding various concentrations of β- cyclodextrin to a given concentration of indomethacin solution was recorded and then plotted versus β - cyclodextrin concentration. Finally, by using the Beer-Lambert law, the stability constant was calculated and found to be: K = 231.65± 22.05 mol^-1 L. (at λ_max = 319 nm) and K = 184.09 ± 39.18 mol^-1 L (at λ_max = 261 nm).

Three ruthenium(II) organometallics of the type, RuCI₂(NO)(PPh₃)(L₂) (where L = amide ligand) have been synthesized. These are characterized on the basis of their elemental analysis IR, ¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P NMR spectra. The probable structures of these organometallics have been discussed. They were used as catalysts for the hydrolysis of rivastigmine tartrate and the percent yields of hydrolyzed products of these drugs were determined spectrophotometrically.

The structures of these newly synthesized compounds are confirmed by their analytical and spectral data. These compounds were also evaluated for their anti-inflammatory, ulcerogenic and analgesic activities. The compound 6J have shown most active anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity with better ulcerogenic activity than phenylbutazone.

Amitriptyline hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant drug. In this research inclusion complexation between amitriptyline as the guest molecule and 3-amino-β - cyclodextrin as the host molecule at pH=6.5, 7, 7.4 and λmax= 238 nm by using U.V.-Visible spectroscopy was investigated. 5 mL solutions consisting of a known and constant amount of amitriptyline and varying amounts of 3-amino-β- cyclodextrin were prepared in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The final solutions had 3-amino-β - cyclodextrin concentrations between 0.0011 M and 0.015 M. U.V. spectrum of each solution was taken at λmax= 238 nm. The absorbances at λmax= 238 nm were recorded and plotted against 3-amino-p - cyclodextrin concentrations. From the graph, the concentrations of free and bound amitriptyline and free 3-amino-p - cyclodextrin were calculated by using the Beer-Lambert law. A stability constant of K= 66.54 ± 5.68 mol^-1L was obtained.
