Textile industry sludge was treated anaerobically under laboratory conditions at 37°C for 60 day to examine the possibility of biogas production. Average biogas production during the whole process was 160 mL/L/day having major percentage 54 and 40 of methane and carbon dioxide, respectively. The pH was varied between 6.2 to 8.4, while Total Volatile Fatty Acids (TVFA) ranged between 42-90 mg/L and chemical oxygen demand of sludge was reduced to 7300 mg/L on 60th day from the initial value of 20,000 mg/L. From the study we conclude that sludge of a textile industry may be used for the production of biogas.

Dispersion of alumina (particle size 0.5μm) in a solvent (methyl ethyl ketone/ ethanol) containing a dispersant (phosphate ester) was studied through rheological measurements. It has been observed that the extent of dispersion of alumina varies with the ambient temperature, resulting in a significant effect on the flow behaviour of the suspension. The shear rate exponent, consistency coefficient and viscosity of the suspensions were found to vary with the ambient temperature. From the present study, it can be inferred that the ambient temperature has an important role in obtaining the desired rheological characteristics of suspensions so as to obtain reproducible tape-cast samples with maximum powder loading.

The fluoride ion concentration in different potable water samples availabel in the Tiruchirapalli Rockfort area was estimated. The other water quality parameters, that is temperature, pH, total solids and alkalinity were also determined. The results indicated the presence of high fluoride ion concentration in the bore well and open well water of western side of Rockfort. This must be due to the presence of shale or granite rocks in that area. the corporation water for the Rockfort area is supplied from a storage tank built on the Rockfort. This water is found to contain a maximum fluoride ion concentration. Dental fluorosis survey was carried out for the school children (8 - 13 year) of the 6 schools located in the Rockfort area. The survey indicated about 43% victims among which the major victims are in the Maithrayee elementary school. The reason must be the usage of corporation water alone by the school. The efficiency of defluoridation was determined using the leaves of Emblicaphyllanthus.
