Gas-solid fluidization is characterized by the formation of bubbles and the expansion beyond the point of incipient fluidization is due to gas bubbles, which increases the bed volume. The bed expansion takes place because of bubbles. There are two distinct phases in gas-solid fluidization one is continuous phase and the other is bubbles phase. According to the phase theory of fluidization, the velocity of flow in continuous phase remains constant at the minimum fluidization velocity the voidage of the continuous phase remains constant. Any excess gas passes in the form of bubbles. Theory is given to predict the value of m in the equation to Godard and Richardson [1] for a bubbling fluidized bed. A correlation for 'm' is obtained for correction in prediction of bubbling fluidized bed height. The final correlation has been obtained as basd on the above equation for 'm' the bed expansion ratio was calculated and found to be satisfactory with measured value.

An attempt has been made to recover lead from galena by leaching with ferric chloride. The galena ore samples were from the Bandalamattu mine area, agnigundala, A.P. The ore analysed 4.81 % Pb. The leaching of galena samples experiments were done by varying the parameters like ferric chloride concentration, leaching time, percent solids and temperature. The results indicate that the maximum recovery of lead was possible when galena was treated with 1M-1.2M ferric chloride and 5 % solids at a temperature of 100°C for a period of 30 minutes.

Low-grade manganese ore of Sandur area is subjected to mineralogical and leaching studies. Mineralogical study of ore samples reveals the presence of pyrolusite, psilomelane, cryptomelane, lithiophorite, manganite and nsutite as ore minerals. Hematite, goethite, magnetite, quartz and kaolin occur as gangue minerals. the textures observed are colloform, replacement and schistose. The manganese ore sample analyzing Mn-34%, Fe-24.36%, SiO₂-6.2%, Al₂O₃-4.1% and P-0.06% was subjected to roasting followed by leaching studies. Experimental results of the leaching studies of the samples reveal that the optimum recovery fo 63.4% of Mn was obtained at 2 hours of roasting time at 600°C. Leach liquor produced may be a source material to recover manganese values for the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide and electrolytic manganese metal.

It is observed that ferrofluid composite with saturation magnetization, Ms=90 gauss, has electrical conductivity of the order of σ = 1.0 x 10^-3Ω^-1cm^-1 which remains stable in gradient magnetic field.

Use of phaneerochaeta chysosporium culture filtrate in delignification of puper pulp has been investigated. Significant drop in lignin concentration is observed. The experimental data are found to deviate from Michaelis-Menten kinetics due to allosteric effect of enzymes. Experimental results are filted to Hill equation and the kinetic parameters estimated. The nature of the velocity vs. substrate concentration curve as well as the value of Hill coeficient, n, indicate the presence of strong positive substrate co-operativty. Results demonstrate the feaibility to reuse the filtrate enzymes for further delignification. The study opens up a new possibility of application of biochemical delignification in the paper mills.

Experiments have conducted to study the effect of different types of turbulence on minimum fluidization velocity in a gas-solid fluidized bed. Four number of rod promoters and seven number of disk promoters with different configuration and dimension have been used. Two different correlations relating minimum fluidization velocity with system and promoter parameters have been developed as under: The predicted values of minimum fluidization mass velocity have been found to be in close agreement with the corresponding experimental ones. The experimental results show that the minimum fluidization mass velocity is influenced by the presence of a promoter, thus giving relatively higher values in a promoted bed as compared to the unpromoted ones for identical operating parameters.

Located at national highways, commercial clusters, clusters, residential and recreational zones, zones, the sampling sites covered most of the important anthropogenic activity areas of thecity. The hourly traffic density and the meteorological conditions were aslo recorded during the sampling period. The sampling sites were classified into 5 categories on the basis of vehicular traffic densities and the site- specific terrain characteristics. For a clear view in data presentation, the measured particle size results were aggregaed in 4 groups PM_2.5 PM₅, PM₁₀ and the non-respirable coarse particulates (PM > 10).

This anisotropy can be adjusted. doped sol-gel structures keep the same magneto-induced circular anisotropy of the ferrofluid but no permanent effect is achieved.

Gasiffication of rice husk was carried out in a throatless down draft gasifler at different specific gasification rate. In all, 10 experiments were performed and energy balance was carried over the whole system for each run. It was found that for each unit of energy input to the gasiffer in the form of rice husk, 69 was converted to chemical energy of producer gas, 6 was associated as sensible heat with producer gas, 16 left the system as chemical energy, of residual char in the run giving highest gasification efficiency. About 8 of the input energy accounted for other losses that included heat conduction and radiation loss from gasifler and energy value of tar and other organic materials formd during the process. With the ineeasing specitic gasification rate, the tar content in producer gas decreased whereas the quality of gas and gasification effciency improved. At SGR of 190 kg h¹m², the gasification efficiency was maximum (68) and decreased with further increase in the SGR.

A number of polymeric glues based on linseed oil, animal hide and hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB)-derived polyurethanes have been synthesised. These glues are sticky in nature and characterised by viscosity, FTIR spectra and adhesive strength. These glues were evaluated for rat control. The HTPB-derived polyurethane, poly [HTPB-hexamethyle-diisocyanate (HMDI)] for linseed oil-based gluse were found to be effective in controlling the rats. Storage ageing studies of these glues were also carried out. It was found that the exposed layer of linseed oil-based glue dried up after 9 months but still remained effective after removing top layer and the HTPB-HMDI-derived polyurethane is effective for 18 months.

The chemical reactions that governing silicon substrate etching and growth of TiSi₂ film from TiCl₄(g)-H₂(g)-Si(s) reaction system have been studied. Aiming at understanding the deposition process, the deposited films are investigated under different experimental conditions by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD analyses showed that the film deposited at the optimum experimental conditions was polycrystalline with the predominant low electrical resistivity phase (C54-TiSi₂). SEM investigations declared that at high deposition temperature, at high H₂/TiCl₄ flow ratio the growth rate was low, whereas at low H₂/TiCl₄ flow ratio the etching and deposition occurred concurrently. At low deposition temperature, at high H₂/TiCl₄ flow ratio, etching process was dominant while at low H₂/TiCl₄ flow ratio nucleation for growth was expected. A predictive diagram, which explained the results, was suggested. Thermodynamic calculations gave reasonable explanation of the observed phenomena.

A novel biomimetic approach in designing and fabrictig engineering ceramic materials has gained much interest in recent times. Following this approach, synthesis has been made of dense Si-SiC duplex ceramic composites and highly porous SiC ceramics in the image of the morphological features inherent in the caudex stem of a local monocotyledonous plant. The process route involves making of a carbonaceous biopreform and its subsequent reaction with an infiltrating silicon melt to yield the biomorphic Si-SiC ceramic composites with flexural strength and Young's modulus of 264 MPa and 247 Gpa, respectively and loss in weight of only ~ 9% during oxidative heating up to 1200°C in flowing air. The Si-SiC composites were transformed into porous (49 vol.%) SiC ceramics with complete preservation of microcellular anatomy of the parent plant, by depleting residual silicon phase in channel pores through reaction with carbon. SiC based materials so derived can be used in structural applications and in designing high temperature filters and catalyst supports.

Response surface methodology was used to optimise the reaction conditions for the production of substrate induced cyt P_<450> in Saccharomyces ceravisiae under catabolic repression condition and for the subsequent use of the self induced enzyme for the biocaalytic reduction of toxic cadmium metal solution in organic phase to elemental cadmium. Immobilized microsomaled cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were used as the biocatalyst and cdcl_<2> was used as the substrate dissolvd in organic solvent. The central composite design was followed for the optimization. The inducer concentration and the time of its addition during the growth phase of the organism for the production of self induced enzyme was opitmised and found to be 2.9mg/100ml and 13.2 hours respectively. Similarly the inital concentration of the substrate. pH of the medium and the time of reaction for the biocatalytic reduction studies, was optimised and was found to be 44mg/100 ml, 9.8 & 24.45 hrs respectively for which the maximum amount of cadmium formed was 76.54ppm.

A number of soil and water samples were collected from the vicinity of effluent treatment plant of a textile and dyeing industry. Several organisms were scrieened for their to ecolourize triphenylmethane group of dyes. A potent organism capable of decolounrizing and degrading triphenylmethane type of dyes was selected. The bacterial strain, that decolourized triphenylmethane group of dyes very rapidly, was identified as Bacillus sp. Under aeroble condition, maximum (98) colour was removed by this strain. The strain did not manifest extracellular. A number of triphenylthane dyes such as magenta, crystal violet, pararosanilline, brilliant green, matachite green and athyl violet and textile and dye industry waste were used. Physico-chemical conditions and media were optimized for the production of maximum cell mass and decolounzing activty. The optimum pH and temperature for decolourization reaction were pH 7 and 50°C, respectively. Column reactors with immobillzed whole cells were used for decolourization of textile and dye-stuff waste. The COD reduction depends on the type of dyes to be treated.
