Coal fly ash was used to synthesize X-type zeolite by alkali fusion followed by hydrothermal treatment. The synthesized zeolite was characterized using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, BET method for surface area measurement etc. The synthesis conditions were optimized to obtain highly crystalline zeolite with maximum BET surface area. The maximum surface area of the product was found to be 383 m²/g with high purity. The crystallinity of the prepared zeolite was estimated to be almost one-fifth of that of commercial 13X zeolite available in the market.

The groundwater of nearby area of industrial zone of Bhilwara is being polluted by the textile wastewater discharged into Banas river. The quality of groundwater of the villages situated in the downstream of Banas river is questionable, therefore, 11 sources from 8 villages were studied to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for irrigation purposes. The groundwater of the study area was classified according to EC, SAR, RSC and RSBC. The irrigation water was also classified using SAR-EC and % Na-EC classifications.

Coal combustion contributes about one fourth of the sulphur oxides in the atmosphere and as sulphur pollution is a problem of major concern, diferent processes for the beneficiation of coal have been caried out in order to reduce the sulphur content of coal. One novel method for reduction of sulphur is to subject the coal to microwave irradiation, which was carried out in the present work. Samples of coal and lignite were subjected to a constant source of microwave radiation in a microwave bench/oven for different time intervals. Fourier transform infrared spectra of some of the samples before and after irradiation with microwaves have been measured. Analysis has been made on both the untreated and treated samples of coal and the results obtained are discussed. It is found that the bonds corresponding to sulphur, such as S-S and C-S vibrations, which are present in the pretreated coal sample are either reduced or absent in the microwave treated sample, showing thereby that the coal has been desulphurized. The results obtained from the spectral interpretation are supported by results of an analytical method.
