Chemical sciences research in India has been mapped with data collected from the CD-ROM version of Chemistry Citatin Index [publication year 2002]. Roughly, 4.5% of the global R&D output in chemical sciences was contributed by Indian in 2002. Indian researchers published 6186 papers from 569 journals and 12 non-journal sources. More than 45% of these papers appeared in journals with an impact factor less than 1.000. Around 2% of the papers were either published in journals with no impact factor or not indexed in JCR 2003. The average impact factor for journal articles during this period is 1.359. While 26% of papers published by Indians were in US journals, the percentages for Indian and UK journals were 21 and 20%, respectively. Among Indian journals, the Asian Journal of Chemistry (IF 0.211) took the major chunk of 269 papers, while the Journal of Indian Chemical Society (IF 0.275) and the Indian Journal of Chemistry B (IF 0.492) carried 224 and 209 papers, respectively. In all, 563 institutions contributed 6199 papers in 2002. Of these papers, 68% were contributed by 10% of Indian institutions. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore ranks first with 345 papers. This is followed by the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad with 263 papers. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai with 259 papers and the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune with 246 papers come in the third and fourth places, respectively. The largest contributions came from Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata. In terms of states, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal are major contributors. About 16% of the papers had international collaboration (with as many as 53 countries). Major collaborating countries in chemical sciences were the US, Germany, Japan and Great Britain.

Attempts to analyse the publication productivity of Anthony J. Leggett, the 2003 Nobel Prize winner in physics. His contributions peaked in 1987, 1994, and 1998 with 10 papers each. He had 194 publications during 1964 - 2004 in domains like Superfluid 3He (65), Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (36), Dissipative Quantum Systems (24), Atomic Alkali Gases (18), and Miscellaneous (51) which were analysed for authorship pattern with his 70 collaborators. Most active collaborators with Anthony J Leggett were: A. Garg with six papers and A. O. MCaldeira, D. M. Ginsberg, D. J. Vanharlingen , F. Sols, S. Takagi and D. A. Wollman with five papers each. His productivity coefficient was 0.60 which clearly indicates that his productivity increased after 50 percentile age. The highest degree of collaboration (1) for Anthony J. Leggett was found during 1964, 1971 and 1983. Journals have been the most preferred channel of communication, where as many as 139 papers out of 194 have been published. The core journals publishing his papers were: Phys. Rev. Left. (42), Phys. Rev. B (9), J. Low Temp: Phys. (8), Phys. Rev. A (7), Ann. Phys. (6), Foundations of physics (6), J. Phys.(5). Prog. Theor: Phys. (5), and Rev. Mod. Phys. (5). Publication density was 3.02 and publication concentration was 3.59.

The study based on the method of observation and interview was undertaken to ascertain how the postgraduate students of Gulbarga University, Gulbarga (N=49) behave on the web. The study indicates that the Student are familiar computer and have an acquaintance with various activities on computer has been indicated. It also indicates students' familiarity with Internet but their level of understanding of Internet, conceptually and practicality varied. As majority of students under study using Internet and the Web had no formal training, their search efficiency also varied. This certainly advocates for a regular and rigorous training programme by the departments of library and information sciences of various universities, particularly on how to find information on Web.

Farmer oriented information resources available in agricultural sector and outside as well as awareness about them among farmers and public, their accessibility relevance and services has been evaluated. It is based on a survey conducted among the institutions as well the expected user community representing various spheres of activity interested in small scale agriculture. The findings revealed that information resources and services in agricultural sector are mostly restricted to scientists. It was found that within the limitations that existed village libraries contained substantial quantity of agricultural information materials in local language and script produced for the use of the farmers and non-specialists. They deal with the situations and crops of the region. Psychological barriers are absent among farmers in approaching village libraries. Their timings and location is also convenient to the farming community. Various recommendations are made on the basis of the study to extent the agricultural information services to the farmers and public living in remote areas, using the existing infrastructures.

Information Technology (IT) has brought rich dividends to the modern society. In the context of providing library and information services to users in higher education, the use of digital resources has become inevitable. This article reports the results of a questionnaire survey conducted to know the computer literacy existing among Postgraduate (PG) students at the time of their entry to various PG courses in Kuvempu University. The study has found that the socio-economic background of students such as domicile, caste category, gender, income group, religion and also the subject background have enormous impact on their take up and use of digital resources. The students belonging to the higher stratum of the society, economically rich, living in urban areas and those studying Science subjects are surpassingly ahead of their counterparts belonging to socially marginalised classes, economically poor, living in rural areas and also those studying in Social Sciences and Humanities. Suggestions have been put-forth to conduct training programmes and provide free access to IT-based services in the university libraries to the disadvantaged students.

Detailed quantitative analysis of Indian contributions on thorium has been attempted to provide interms of publications output as per International Nuclear Information System database during 1970-2004. A total of 2399 papers were published by the Indian scientists in the field of thorium. There were only nine publications in 1970. Thereafter, a steady growth was observed except for the period 1983-1985. The highest papers (188) ware published in the year 2000. USA with 8049 (28.05 per cent) and India with 2399 (8.30 per cent) publications were the top two countries who published work on thorium. Authorship and collaboration trend was towards multi-authored papers as 85.70 per cent of the papers were collaborative. There were 79 international collaborative papers. Bilateral collaboration accounted for 90.14 per cent of total collaborative papers. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai topped the list with 1251 authorships followed by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam with 168, Atomic Minerals Division, Hyderabad with 71, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar with 43 and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata with 31 authorships, respectively. The journals most preferred by the scientists for publication of papers were: Journal of the Indian Chemical Society with 78 papers, followed by the Indian Journal of Chemistry A with 60 papers, Bulletin of Radiation Protection with 56 papers, Journal of Radio Analytical and Nuclear Chemistry with 54 papers, Radiation Protection and Environment with 37 papers, Exploration and Research for Atomic Minerals and Journal of Geological Society of India with 35 papers each. English was the most predominant language used by the scientists for communication. The high frequency keywords were: thorium (559), uranium (316), thorium oxides (269), India (257), solvent extraction (236), quantitative chemical analysis (221) and thorium 232 (202).

Investigation was made on the authorship pattern in Aquaculture Journals, based on the data collected from Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts Part I (ASFA I) for a period of 3 years i.e. 1991,1996 and 2001. In all the years, multiple authored contributions were more than that of single authors in all broad areas of aquaculture as the values of contributions of multiple authors ranged from 57.1% to 90.8 % in different aspects of aquaculture. The degree of collaboration was found to be 0.85 for all the three years and it ranged from 0.83 (1991) to 0.86 (1996 and 2001).

Quantitatively 358 publications published by the social scientists of Tata Institute of Social Sciences during 2001-2004 in various Departments and Research Units for authorship pattern and collaboration trend have been attempted to analyse. The results indicate that 90.22 % of papers were single authored followed by two authored papers - 5.86 % and three authored papers - 3.35 %. Most prolific authors were Shalini Bharat (21), M. M. Koganuramath (18), Mallikarjun Angadi, (13), R. N. Sharma (13), Chhaya Datar, (12), Siva Raju, (12), and Sarthi Acharya, (10). The most preferred journals by the social scientists were: Economic and Political Weekly, Indian Journal of Social Work, and Indian Journal of Labour Economics, with four papers each. Publication Density observed in the present study was 1.46.
