The use of computer and information technology is on an escalation. The internet, one of the key developments in this field, provides instant access to latest medical information. The present study was conducted (i) to estimate the extent and purpose of internet usage among undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical students, (ii) to identify factors that encourage the students to use internet for medical information, (iii) to assess the need for incorporating computer education in medical curriculum. A prospective, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted on 150 students of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital between June 2009 and December 2009. Majority of the students accessed internet from their home PC (42% UGs and 52% PGs).Common search engines browsed commonly by both UGs and PGs include Google and yahoo. Regarding principles of telemedicine and evidence-based medicine, majority of the PGs are well versed while UGs are not (p-value 0.0001). Almost all students agreed to incorporate computer education in medical curriculum. Primary source of medical information was textbook for UGs (62%) and internet for the PGs (48%). Majority of UGs (48%) used internet as a ready source of information thus saving time while PGs (68%) primarily relied on internet for recent advances in their disciplines. The primary purposes of internet use are educational for both UGs and PGs. The data obtained indicates that majority of the medical students participating in the present study embrace and use internet to access medical information. It also justifies the need to incorporate internet and associated information technology into existing medical curriculum.

Scientific serials collection is to support the undergraduate and graduate programs of the University, to provide general and advanced materials for student's research scholars and faculty members in all fields, and to furnish a limited number of materials for leisure reading. Departments, using their Library allocations, select serials appropriate for their students and faculty. Because the cost of serial publications has risen, and continues to rise, at an alarming rate, each department is responsible for keeping its serial list within a budget limitation. In any library there are three important components that together make up a library are users, staff and collection development. Among these, the collection development of need based collection required serving the academic community and making the collection widely available and fostering intensive use of collection is one of the most important primary functions. Libraries most of the services depend upon the development of relevant, need based representative collection of documents, to meet the aims and objectives of the parent organization. Serials serve as a major source of current information in many academic disciplines. Subscription to a serial title involves a prospective long-term commitment of funds, and because of the increasing cost of serial subscriptions, acquisition of new serial titles requires careful consideration.

Colour has a long history of use in the maps. In ease of thematic maps the experiences of the Map Division of the OSS of U.S.A. (now CIA) during World War II; subsequent establishment and an increase in the number of the cartography courses in universities; developments in printing and computer technology has resulted in an increase of colour use in thematic cartography. Given this scenario of growing use of colour in thematie mapping there is a need of the choice of a system for the colour description and naming system with unequivocal colour descriptions and their precise specifications, in universally understood terms. This is necessary because everyday common terminology is often vague, impoverished and ambiguous. Often the terminology is culture specific and shows a lack of uniformity. The paper discusses a choice for such a system and the grounds for its selection. Towards this end the choice of colour notation system will be discussed in the background of the nature of colour and its visual processing together with the structuring of the semantic relations and the syntactical rules with the colour dimensions as graphic variables. Coupled with these semiology discussions the eonnotative implications of colour and its different dimensions and the effects of aesthetic use of colour on cognitive processing of the information from such maps will also be taken up.

Int J Adv Comput Inf Technol 2012, 1(2), 108-14.
Internet has a wide collection of information which encompasses both relevant and irrelevant data. In general, search engines provide abundant information for any search term which is keyed in. Some of the search results may be relevant and some others may be irrelevant. Therefore, it is tedious and time consuming for the knowledge seeker to filter out the relevant details from the huge pile of search results. Current web search engines are built to serve all users, independent of the special needs of any individual user. User profiling helps in filtering out the unwanted information and presents only the relevant results to the user. An efficient Information Retrieval System (IRS) is developed to extract the relevant and most appropriate information for any particular search term. An efficient database that covers important terms in engineering curriculum has been designed and personalization of search process is carried out based on the user interests. Corrugated Search (CS) is employed in which relevant search results are filtered and presented to the user based on user profile and search context.

Research activity of individual universities has conventionally been measured by a number of bibliometric indicators based on the number of papers published in top-ranked journals or the number of citations they have received. Research funding is typically considered just one of several important input indicators, about on par with the number of researchers, that affect the research activities of universities. However, when we consider that competitive research funding applicants need to pass a rigorous screening by peers, the number and amount of accepted research funding proposals could be used as an output indicator for universities' research activities as well. The Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, which are provided by the Japanese Government, are the largest competitive external research funding source in Japan, and they play an extremely important role in helping researchers, especially at universities, undertake their work. In this study, we focus not only on the principal investigators but also on the co-investigators of funding applications to examine the indicators in university evaluation and research collaborations among universities.

All scientific research end up as publications in open literature or as classified documents, in print or digital form. In India, scientific literature has increased as a result of increase in investments in Science and Technology, improvement in Research and Development infrastructure, and increase in research activities. The situation calls for monitoring and measuring the performance of the country in Science and Technology. Several informetric indicators such as scientific productivity and impact of individual scientists and institutions based on the quantity and quality of research publications, scattering of literature across Indian and foreign journals, and nature of collaboration have been developed to measure the performance of individuals and institutions in a country in various disciplines. In this context, an attempt is made to understand the status of Polymer Science research in India using Chemical Abstracts database on CD-ROM as the source for collecting the required data for the period of 1992 to 2006. 37 Keywords for representing Polymer Science were selected with the help of Polymer Indexing Thesaurus and the subject experts. A total of 22000 bibliographic entries were downloaded with the help of keywords and occurrence of the term 'India' in affiliation of the first author for the period $92 to 2006. After verification of these records for duplicates, homonyms and synonyms, a total of 21,918 bibliographic entries with abstracts and subject descriptors were subjected to further analysis. Major findings of the study are that 99.37% of the Polymer Science literature contributed by Indian scientists were published in the form of research articles in scientific periodicals and patents. Research Institutes are the major contributors of research publications. 11.92% of the research publications were authored by single authors and remaining 88.08% of the publications were authored by joint or multiple authors. Average number of authors per publications is 4.2. The percentage of single authored publications had decreased from 14% in 1992 to 11% in 2006. The degree of collaboration (g) is 0.878, indicating very high degree of collaboration or team work in the field. Twenty four Indian authors with more than thirty publications during 1992-2006 are identified as prolific authors. Data related to the total publications during their entire career, taken from Scopus database shows that Dr. Thomas Sabu has published highest number.

Collnet J Scientomet Inf Mgmt 2011, 5(2), 171-83.
Examine the conformity of Lotka's Law to authorship distribution in the field of computer science using Web of Science (WoS) during 1986-2009. Totally, 19,150 articles in Computer Science produced by 45,713 authors, was compiled for analysis. Lotka's Law was tested using both generalized and modified forms by using the formula: Xn y = C, the values of the exponent n and the constant c were computed; and Kolmogorov-Smimov (K-S) goodness-of-fit test were applied. The results suggested that author productivity distribution predicted in "Lotka's generalized inverse square law" didn't conform to Computer Science. Outputs while, the modified Lotka's Law by Pao, was confirmed to the discipline. The main elements involved in fitting in a bibliometrics method have been identified: Lotka's original inverse square law or modified method, subject area, period of time, measurement of authors, testing a criterion for assessing goodness-of-fit.

Open source software is computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available free of charge for anyone to use and manipulate. Free access and good level of functionality, better communication system, decreasing cost of computing, community collaborative effort, and availability of source code etc. Increase the importance of open source software. In this paper a comparison of three most popular open source softwares, DSpace. Greenstone and E.prints are made. Even though there are a number of open source digital library softwares, DSpace, Greenstone and EPrints are becoming most popular in India and abroad. But often librarians are in a dilemma in the selection of appropriate software as to their requirements. It is to be noted that each software package has its own strengths and weaknesses and library can select the one which is most appropriate to fulfil their needs so as to bring out a clear idea to choose the appropriate software according to their requirements for developing a digital repository.

Open Source Software (OSS) is of consummate interest to librarians in the light of minimizing the cost of school library automation in India. It promises better quality, higher reliability, flexibility and eliminates the monopoly of commercial software. It has incisive quality over proprietary software since it can be customized precisely to meet the unique requirements of a library. Further, open source communities and librarians share the same values of free and equal access to information. This study provides insight and informs librarians about various OSS tools available for instruction and library automation. It brings out the structural and institutional challenges faced by Indian school libraries in its effort to automate their library using OSS. To overcome the existing problems and capitalize the benefits offered by OSS, a collaborative Model of Government, University and School Libraries (GUS) has been proposed. This paper provides introductory Information that seeks to wean Indian school library off the traditional computing products and dive Into the pool of Open Source resources available today.

Most of the papers published in the more than 360 Indian open access journals are by Indian researchers. But how many papers do they publish in high impact international open access journals? We have looked at India's contribution to all seven Public Library of Science (PLoS) journals, 10 BioMed Central (BMC) journals and Acta Crystallographica Section E: Structure Reports. Indian crystallographers have published more than 2,000 structure reports in Acta Crystallographica, second only to China in number of papers, but have a much better citations per paper average than USA, Britain, Germany and France, China and South Korea. India's contribution to BMC and PLoS journals, on the other hand, is modest at best. We suggest that the better option for India is institutional self-archiving.

Curr Sci 2011, 100(1), 38-42.
Analysis of life sciences extramural research (EMR) projects, recommended during the period 2004-2008, indicates no apparent gender bias in awarding EMR grants. The success rate of women scientists from universities in getting EMR grants is higher compared to men scientists, unlike R&D institutions where it is relatively lower. Outreach of life sciences research funding to women scientists is limited to mainly Delhi, Karnataka and West Bengal. Relatively lower strength of women in most institutions, rather than gender discrimination, seems to be the reason of lower representation of women in life sciences research funding.

Collnet J Scientomet Inf Mgmt 2011, 5(2), 185-203.
Study analyses the research output of India in AIDS/HIV during 1999-2008 on several parameters including the growth, rank and global publications share, citation impact, share of international collaborative papers, contribution of major collaborative partner countries, contribution of various subject-fields and using co-word analysis various diseases/infections commonly associated with AIDS/HIV in India are identified. The Scopus Citation Database has been used to retrieve the data for 10 years (1999-2008) by searching the keywords (AIDS*; Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome; Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome; HIV*; Human Immuno deficiency virus; Immunodeficiency virus, Human; Immunodeficiency syndrome, acquired; Immunologic deficiency syndrome, acquired; virus, Human immunodeficiency) in the combined Title, Abstract and keywords fields. To compare the profile of Indian research output with China, South Africa and Brazil, the study downloaded the data on these countries using the Affiliation field of this database. India ranks at 12th position among the top 20 countries and its global publication share (2.07%) is higher than Brazil (1.74%), but lower than China (2.24%) and South Africa (2.52%). Similarly its average annual publication growth rate of India is higher than that of Brazil, but lower than that of China and South Africa. But India's international collaborative publication share is lower than other developing countries in top 20. Citation quality as reflected in citations per paper for South Africa and Brazil is found to be higher than that of India.Concludes that India needs to increase its output and bring about improvement in the quality of its research efforts. This can be done by investing much more in R&D expenditure, increase in the deployment of more qualified manpower and in increasing international collaboration and by modernizing and strengthening its research infrastructure.
