Report on a study done on electronic health information resources (e-resources) usage in three universities offering medical education in Uganda. One of the objectives of the study was to investigate factors influencing utilisation of e-resources, which this paper set out to examine. Data was gathered through interviews, questionnaires and citation analysis. Graduate students, teaching staff/ researchers, heads of departments and librarians participated. The ATLAS. ti and Excel programs were used to analyse the qualitative and quantitative data respectively. The study revealed that utilisation of e-resources was influenced by human and institutional factors. While usage was low, there was a significant relationship between usage and information literacy. Addressing factors that affect utilisation of e-resources improves study, research, and ultimately patient care. While healthcare providers will make informed clinical decisions, quality of research and student grades will improve. It will guide curriculum development and/or revision in those fields and guide policy formulation in setting up minimum standards for libraries in universities. E-resources are important in medical education because they support study and research. Addressing their utilisation therefore improves library services, study, research and ultimately, healthcare.

The 'scientific journal' is a highly essential information resource to the academic community for their research work and publication of research results. The 'serials crisis' is more experienced in developing countries including India over the past decades. The efforts of UGC In/onet consortia and also the subscription of databases by the libraries result in an exponential rise in the access of journals by the university academic community. Thus, the paper intends to study the influence of increasing number of journals on the research output of University of Hyderabad, which has a distinguished research profile over a period of time. The results of Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r)' indicate that research output is in coordination with the journals growth. It is suggested to provide useful journals considering the gaps in the requirements of the academic community. The bibliographic search databases like SCOPUS need to include journals from more geographical regions.

This paper is an attempt to reveal the existing gap through literature review, The use of any library does not depend on the physical facility or the service. The use varies from user to user, as not every person is using the library in same manner and in the same amount because the user group is not having homogenous characteristics. The user group can be divided based on the number of characteristics like demographic, psychological or educational etc. Lot of studies have been done over this issue and to understand the user but still there are some major areas and issues which are left to examine.

Study determines the level of access to the internet in various organizations in Botswana. It investigates the problems brought about by the misuse of internet facilities in the workplace and the measures or policies put in place to monitor internet use. It also reports the use, restrictions and monitoring of internet facilities by organizations to their employees. Survey research design was adopted and questionnaire was used for data collection. It was administered across113 organizations in Gaborone, the capital city of the Republic of Botswana. The data was analyzed using the SPSS software. Findings revealed that although majority of the organizations monitor employee internet use, less than half had an internet use policy in place. Also, majority provide access to all employees with the least from the public administration/Government. More than three quarter of them do not monitor and review websites connections, some monitor and review websites connections for all the employees while a few others monitor and review websites connections for selected job categories. Majority restricted or blocked pornographic and online gaming sites while news sites enjoyed free access. All the public sector organizations indicated having a written policy on internet use but majority of research organizations had no policy. The study recommends that organizations should produce and implement written policies on internet use and inform employees about such policies and come up with measures to monitor employee use of internet in the workplace.

Ann Libr Inf Stud 2011, 58(5), 270-81.
Study addresses the health information needs, sources and information seeking behaviour of women living in a rural palm plantation community in Nigeria, using data collected through focus group discussion (FGD) and a questionnaire.Majority of the women were married, aged about 31 years, mainly Christian traders, and have a mean household size of 5.6.Most of them have secondary level education and are low income earners. They owned and used radios more than other electronic devices, and they sought health information mainly for themselves and their children. About nine out of every ten reported that they needed information about malaria, which they obtained mainly from friends/families or chemist shops. The FGD revealed that the women relied on traditional sources for health information; they practiced self-medication guided by prior diagnosis and visited the hospitals only when their illnesses went out of hand. There was an intriguing observation of referral practices from modern to traditional healers; they had low consciousness about HIV/AIDS and poor knowledge about behavioural aspects of illnesses. The long distance to the general hospitals and the exorbitant fees charged by the private hospitals discouraged their use of modern health facilities. There was also low trust and confidence on the services, competence and adherence to ethical standards by the modern health care providers. Just as health workers in the community require reorientation to fit in the setting, the women also require intensive awareness and literacy intervention to increase their person-efficacy and reduce the effect of cultural glass ceiling that disempowers them, and promotes reliance on quack medical services.

This article aims to share information about Japan's policy interventions for responding to the increasing number of elder abuse cases. Over millennia, many Asian families have followed Confucian virtues in taking responsibility for the care of elderly family members. However, the new economic system (capitalism) and its ideology (individualism) have likely impacted these traditions, with potential implications for the care and treatment of older citizens. We first provide the background on elder abuse in Japan and then organize major findings from recent national studies into micro and macro-level factors that contributed to the increasing discovery of elder abuse cases and the development of elder abuse prevention laws in Japan. Next, we describe a new Japanese law developed in 2006, the Elder Abuse Prevention and Support for Caregivers of the Elderly Act. In addition to the Japanese model of case detection, we endorse the development of more effective social intervention programme to adequately support family caregivers and respond to the needs of elders at risk for abuse and neglect.

Ann Libr Inf Stud 2011, 58(5), 211-18.
Study examines the role of School Media Centres (SMC) in technology integration in Nigerian schools. The historical research method or what some refer as historical inquiry was adopted for the study. It found that the School Media Centres have an indispensible role to play in this regard. However, several factors were discovered to militate against the realization of the centre's full potentials. These factors include poor implementation of ICT in schools, lack of teachers' confidence and teachers' computer anxiety, lack of teachers' competency due to lack of time for training, lack of access to resources, infrastructural challenges such as erratic power supply, and lack of technical support. If these militating factors are not addressed, the Centres may never be able to contribute meaningfully to technology integration in Nigerian schools. The study, therefore, recommends that a change in government attitude to technology acquisition, integration, and use; formulation of a sound ICT integration policy distinct from the general ICT policy; and improved funding among others are required.
