Data mining requires associated items to be mined from given transactions. Association rule mining (ARM) has gained importance in view of trend-prediction and decision-making process. Mostly ARM is implemented using variants of FP tree growth techniques. Introduces an improved technique for ARM - Improved Relative Dotted Sequence Path (IRDSP)-based ARM. The logic justifying why this technique saves time in comparison with classical technique - FP tree based-ARM has been explained. Projected technique saves time on two counts. On first count, the arrangement in descending order on the basis of occurrence frequency is not required. On second count, unlike FP tree, where each node and link is traversed many a times for generating frequent item set, this technique traverses them only once. The gain in time is because of time spent in formation of IRDSP graph. However as size of graph grows beyond a certain level, the proposed technique becomes comparable with other proposed approaches. Still the gain for small and moderate level set of transactions validates the effort.

There has been a paradigm shift the world over, the way how information and knowledge is being generated, stored, accessed, disseminated and consumed. Information and communication technology (ICT) is the game changer in this and it has propelled the growth of large numbers of electronic resources across the world. Organizations now spend a major portion of their budget for subscribing to electronic resources such as e-journals, e-books, bibliographic/full-text databases, online services and web portals. It is imperative on the part of the information professional to have a componentized and a multi-system approach to knowledge technologies and information management. Seamless aggregation and meticulous integration of diverse data streams embracing the traditional as well as the electronic information is the most appropriate strategy to be adopted and applied. Switching over to the technology pedestal shall ensure the information systems an exponential growth in the r-resource base, as well as facility to outreach to a wider community at a 24x7 formula. Information systems could also explore numerous resource base enhancement innovations such as the UGC Infonet, INDEST Consortium etc. and several Open Source Digital Library technologies towards making the library vibrant, resourceful, accessible and visible. More over with the advent of an array of ICT applications and with the upsurge and penetration of a vast variety of electronic content, the multitude of electronic information services will indeed attract and potentially influence the users prompting them to step in and stick to the changed scenario. As a measure of the impact on the scientific and research productivity, the increase in the overall scholarly intellectual capital of the institute could be matched against the improvement in research publications and the conferences, symposia, workshops etc. hosted by the organization. Quality improvement on the courses offered by the organization could also be considered.

Data for the exploratory study on web link analysis were extracted using the AltaVista search engine. A sample of 2395 links was selected using proportional-to-size sampling technique while individual link was selected using systematic sampling. The data were analysed using the frequency and percentage distributions. The results of the analyses showed that 73.7% of the links were from the Top Ten African Universities to the Top Ten World Universities; whereas these Ten African Universities received only 26.3% inlinks from the Top Ten World Universities. It was also found that most of the outlinks from the Top Ten African Universities were to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (27.3%) while the highest number of inlinks were from Stanford University (21.8%). The study concludes that African universities showed more interest in linking to the world class universities; a trend that was not reciprocated by the world universities. The low level of links received by the African universities was probably due to the fact that African universities in general have only recently embraced the many features of the World Wide Web. It is recommended that African universities should improve their presence on the web and incorporate ranking in their web relationship with other universities which should significantly be tailored to benefits that could be received from academic activities.

Bradford's law of scattering is based on the principle that every scientific field is related, however remotely, to every other field. One hundred and forty one Ph.D. theses accepted in the field of psychology for the award of doctoral degrees were analysed to identify the Bradford's zones and productivity of journals cited in the theses. The productivity of cited journals is measured after dividing the journals into four equal groups. The average rate of productivity of journals in the first group is 254 articles, whereas it has considerably gone down to 10.73 articles in the fourth group. The journal distribution as per the Bradford's law reveals the ratio as 17:46:358 in psychology, dispersion of journal titles in psychology does not satisfy the Bradford's Law of Scattering.

Ann Libr Inf Stud 2012, 59(2), 97-105.
This study is a 3-week experiment using Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) Digital Library and clients as study area and population respectively. Having observed the problem of students and researchers underutilization of electronic databases subscribed by academic institutions in Nigeria, the research was aimed at testing students and researchers approach to a new method that may enhance usage of subscribed electronic databases and recommend it if positive. Dummy links, representing some of the Universal Resource Locators (URLs) of the databases subscribed by MOUAU were created as the desktop page of ten computers in the digital library. Designed purposively, a click on the dummy links referred clients to the librarian. The record of clients who reported to the Digital Librarian as a result of the dummy upload request was collated. Apart from finding that, gender, level of study and purpose of visit are electronic database utilization variables, the study reveals that creating URL links on desktop pages would effectively sensitize and increase students' utilisation of the various electronic databases subscribed by individual Nigerian academic institutions. The experiment's result show that URL links would effectively introduce subscribed electronic databases to students and researchers much better than any other means.

The last two decades, Libraries have experimented with technology to provide traditional library services in the online environment. The use of e-mail, chat and other online media to provide reference services has presented numerous challenges and opportunities. As a result of these collaborations, librarians must often work with users outside of their primary patron base. Collaborative online reference services have brought together librarians from different environment, including public, academic and special libraries. Livechat@BDU Library Web Portal will allow our Library Users to review of their work request on-line from any computer that is connected to the Network. Online chat, RSS feeds - we never imagined that these technologies would impact on information services in the ways they have and we can begin to imagine the greater changes that tomorrow will bring in the world of the virtual reference library. This paper is to help librarians understand and appreciate chat reference users, to present practical tools for serving this population and to stimulate further discussion and inquiry into teen use of chat reference services. I believe that responsive service to this population is crucial to the future development and growth of chat reference services.

Information seeking behavior (ISB) studies is one area in library and information science that has over the years attracted the attention of information professionals, resulting in several studies being carried out with a view to understand why people seek information, how they seek it, and what influences their information seeking behavior. Thus, the main objective of the study was to investigate whether the information seeking behavior of the Ulama is influenced by their denominational and sectarian affiliations. The study deployed the survey research method. The target population was made up of 973 Ulama dispersed within 27 Local Government Areas of Borno State of Nigeria. Proportional stratified random sampling technique was used to arrive at the sample size of 284. The study used questionnaire to collect data which was subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistical procedures. The study identified the existence of various religious groups in Borno and highlighted the information sources preferred as well as the diverse search strategies adopted when seeking information. Most importantly however, the study revealed that the denominational and sectarian differences does not affect the ways the Ulama search for information to carry out their roles, what however influences their preaching, counseling, administration, and leadership roles, was their interpretations of Islam according to sectarian and doctrinal beliefs.

As we approach the twenty-first century, journals offer one of the greatest challenges confronting library and information science professionals. For more than a decade, journals prices have continuously increased at a rate far higher than general inflation and library funding levels, placing genuine financial pressure on most libraries. Some of the technological developments such as electronic journals, CD-ROMs, listservs, the Internet, and the World Wide Web (WWW) have reduced the crisis in this regard to some extent. However, at the same time it also creates unresolved problems and opportunities for the library professionals in particular and growth of information in various subject fields in general. Like in other subject fields, the growth of e-journals in Social Science has also increased many folds during last few years. In 1989-90 Ulrich's listed 2131 serials in an online format (either exclusively online or simultaneously with a print version); in 1998 it contained 8762.

005489 Muralikrishna C (SDCE, Dravidian Univ, Kuppam-517 425) : Need for digitization of university libraries. Pearl 2010, 4(3), 156-9.
The Library, as the life blood of higher education institutions, can benefit tremendously from the facilities provided by the ICT. The university libraries can be transformed into a new information services unit, providing electronic cataloguing, electronic on-line. Public access catalogues, electronic acquisition and serials control. Electronic inter-library loan and electronic circulation functions. But it must be realized that many university libraries are yet to take advantages of modern ICT. In some of the first generation universities, digitalization is taking place in many of their libraries and library information networks are being established with connectivity through the university campus network to the Internet. Digitization is an excellent way of providing access to library material, but the technology, in its current state of development, is not adequate for archival preservation. Digitization has proven to be possible for nearly every format and medium presently held by Libraries, from maps to manuscripts, and moving images to musical recordings. The use of hardware and software for capturing an item and converting it into bits and bytes, matched by a quickly developing set of practices for describing and retrieving digital objects, is giving from to the talk of library without walls. Digitization refers to the conversion of materials that were originally created in another format into an electronic form.
