Ann Libr Inf Stud 2011, 58(3), 211-8.
Study examines the role of School Media Centres (SMC) in technology integration in Nigerian schools. The historical research method or what some refer as historical inquiry was adopted for the study. It found that the School Media Centres have an indispensible role to play in this regard. However, several factors were discovered to militate against the realization of the centre's full potentials. These factors include poor implementation of ICT in schools, lack of teachers' confidence and teachers' computer anxiety, lack of teachers' competency due to lack of time for training, lack of access to resources, infrastructural challenges such as erratic power supply, and lack of technical support. If these militating factors are not addressed, the Centres may never be able to contribute meaningfully to technology integration in Nigerian schools. The study, therefore, recommends that a change in government attitude to technology acquisition, integration, and use; formulation of a sound ICT integration policy distinct from the general ICT policy; and improved funding among others are required.

Aggregated Citations of Cited Articles (ACCA) is a methodology for evaluation of scientific journals. ACCA is formulated based on a concept of discrete elemental system that is applicable to a number of fields such as physics, chemistry, etc. It considers journal as a discrete element system whose overall performance is measured only through the active articles and their citations. Evaluation of only the cited articles allows the journals to retain their originality in nature and variety in publication of documents, for which they are known, without affecting the ranking of the journal. The paper explains the theory and practical application of ACCA for the evaluation of the journals.

Paper critically analyses 239 scholarly communications published in the inaugural five volumes of Journal of Informetrics (JOI) to examine growth of literature, types of communications, authorship pattern, collaboration trend, predominant research domains, etc. Subsequent analysis focuses on prolific contributors, degree of collaboration, and time-lag trend. Findings reveal that - publication output doubles over the study period as article publications increase considerably; though single-authored contributions were significant (30 %), majority of contributions were collaborated by two-authors (36 %), while average authorship accounts for 2.28 per communications. Degree of collaboration (DC) was impressive (0.699) but not overwhelming as research collaborations has emanated from 199 higher learning institutions of 32 countries across the globe. Ranking of prolific contributors has shown Prof. Egghe on the top followed by L Bornmann; R Rousseau and L Leydesdoff. Result also shows upward trend of keyword usage with an average of 4.55 per items, of which h-index, citation analysis, bibliometrics, g-index, etc, expectedly predominates. Scholarly nature of source journal has been further ascertained from increasing citations and reference usage trend. Moreover, growing hardness of the field has been attributed to JOI due to the increasing usage of tables and figures. Study also showed that the journal takes an average of about four month time to publish a manuscript.

Process of designing systems or products largely depends on a number of decisions, like "who do I design for?", "what should my product do?", "what are the user requirements?" etc. The developing teams usually base their decisions on experience and/or heuristics and this is particularly the case, in the development of online products and especially online exhibitions. The different solutions are frequently case studies of specific museums or institutions that wish to provide online content to actual or possible visitors. In addition, the interdisciplinary nature of the endeavor, involving museology, technology but also education, poses important design problems. In the following sections, a generic methodology is presented for the design of online exhibitions, using top-down processes and transferable findings across museum types that wish to assist the designers during the early decision stages. This paper provides an introduction to the field, emphasising its interdisciplinary nature and reviews related work in the area of online exhibition design. It also presents an overview of the methodology, elaborating on the individual methodology steps; in particular, the processes for determining the visitors' perception of the museum (degree of museumness); the museum needs that require to be supported; the educational approach to be adopted; the relevance to life-long learning activities; the approach to adaptivity; and user involvement have been reviewed.

Promise of virtual exhibitions has been attractive to faculty and staff at the University of Virginia (UVa1) for well over a decade. The use of Virtual Exhibitions is threefold: (i) 'Exhibitions' is a useful metaphor for publishing; (ii) 'Exhibitions' suggests curated collections and mixed media; and (iii) 'Virtual' suggests that this new form of publication is accomplished online. This case explores the current ways faculty and graduate students at UVa are meeting their needs as well as an earlier development effort of the Virtual Exhibition Tool (VET). Development on the VET continued for more than a year as part of UVa's response to the appeal of virtual exhibitions. At UVa, a large part of this need is now met using Omeka VisualEyes and WordPress.Several other solutions are also in use currently at UVa. All these solutions are being recommended by SHANTI (Sciences, Humanities and Arts Network of Technological Initiatives), a faculty-led center at UVa. Omeka is an open source tool for building online exhibitions. At UVa, Omeka is chosen to meet this need for online virtual exhibitions rather than to continue development of the VET. There are at least two other solutions being used for online exhibitions building at UVa that are also briefly analysed here. This paper explores these current solutions in use at UVa and outlines the lessons learned from them and from the earlier development effort on the VET.

Article tide deliberates on the changing role of the librarians in the virtual/digital era. Electronic information creates challenges for the library community at its very foundation, moving it away from the traditional paper-and-print format to an ethereal world of circuits and connectivity. Now the concept of the library doesn't remain as a building or a physical repository that houses information. It has reached beyond the four walls of buildings. Librarians have a long history of adopting technology to enhance services. Librarians have changed themself from using early typewriters to the present internet. Authors are entering the virtual library phase and librarians have to use the changing technology to provide the best access and service to their patrons. Librarians are professionals trained in the acquisition, organization, retrieval, and dissemination of information. In essence, the practice of librarianship in the virtual library environment will not be very different from that in the traditional print-based library. Virtual library is not the ultimate answer to everyone's information needs. It is merely another step in a dynamic and evolutionary process. The traditional print library and its services will not disappear. Librarians must accept and adapt to the new techniques and systems. They must recognize the enormous potential of the virtual library, address the issues involved in its creation, and take a leadership role in integrating these new systems and services into libraries, for their own good and for the good of users.
