The concept of subject as expounded in library and information science (LIS) has been interpreted here from the standpoint of the concept of word in linguistics. Both the concepts have been thoroughly reviewed. It has been observed that the concept of subject so long conceived by different researchers in LIS is basically preceded by the concept of document. The description of subject, therefore in most cases, by default becomes incumbent within the concept of document. Since the document is a macroscopic entity, therefore document-dependent description of subject naturally portrays a macroscopic layout of the same. This paper attempts to develop a document-independent description of subject, which is based on semantically-related words within the domain of appropriate context. According to this new description, the subject would eventually become definable as sets of well-defined and semantically-related words that may be regarded as microscopic description. It has also been found out that the seed of document-independent and word-based definition of subject was already sown in the concept of semantic field, a domain under the subject linguistics. This concept was incepted by Trier and subsequently modified by Lehrer. It has been logically established that the idea of foci incepted by Ranganathan and the idea of semantic field incepted and modified by Trier and Lehrer respectively are conceptually equivalent. A subject may therefore be described as sets of semantic fields and, in turn as sets of words.

Social responsibility encompasses the sectors like health, education, employment, income and quality of life. It should be binding on the corporate sector to work on the above aspects, which are thought to be primary social indicators. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in India is in a very nascent stage. It is still one of the least understood initiatives in the Indian development sector. The CSR represents an interesting evolution and culmination of philanthropy and ethics. It is regarded as vehicle through which companies give something back to the society. It involves providing innovative solutions to societal and environmental challenges. The corporate sector has a pivotal role to play in ensuring private investment flows to those rural areas that have been left out of the development process so far and also to work for sustainable development of rural areas in general. Public library can act as an agency for social and personal development and can become a positive agent for bringing change in the community.

In addition to e-commerce, e-mail and other applications over the Internet, it has been used in common household items as well. The increased reliance on cryptographic methods has raised several ethical questions of global concern that are closely related to fundamental human rights. Some view it as a boon, as an escape from the oppressive hands of the state while others see it as a way of making the information-poor have to pay for every information and denial of access to essential information. In this paper an attempt has been made to separate out the concepts appropriate to each interpretation. Digital libraries also face several ethical problems concerning cryptography that even stand against the principles of a public library system. The problems are related to inequality of access, intellectual property and copyright issues.

Higher education in Nigeria has come under severe criticisms in recent time due to poor quality of its products. There is therefore an urgent need for academic institutions in Nigeria to catch up with innovations in educational practices in developed economies. This paper explores the benefits of digital libraries to higher education in Nigeria in the 21st century. It examines the challenges being faced by higher education in Nigeria. These include the deplorable state of the libraries, inadequate funding, severe shortfall in teacher: student ratio, poor quality of graduates, increasing demand for participation in higher education, among others. It highlights the fact that digital libraries are critical and essential for effective teaching, research, and learning in all tertiary institutions in the 21st century and it should therefore be a priority. However, the paper stresses that the development of digital libraries should not be conceived as a panacea for the myriads of challenges facing higher education in Nigeria but that it is a technology that promises to address some of these challenges. Therefore, strong and unwavering commitment by all the stakeholders towards the deployment of digital libraries in tertiary education is recommended.

The introduction of digital preservation services into the operations of institutions where existing workflow processes are established affects the process infrastructure in many ways. This leads in itself to mutual adaptation needs. If not only internal but also external organisational units are involved and that is often unavoidable in a complex process such as the long-term preservation-the importance of a comprehensive service including an advanced organisational solution and a cost model is striking. Against this background, it is necessary to bring together technology and organisation and to anchor in a holistic approach operational aspects of digital preservation and its organisational embeddedness in institutions. Of course needs that are stated in a theoretical manner require practical implementation. Reflecting the history of workflow implementation in the German National Library some central needs and results from these experiences are presented. The new workflow for mass ingest of digital publications integrates requirements from the digital preservation unit in the broader scope of ingest routines and showcases the demand for modular and generic components, which can be integrated in the IT-infrastructure of a library. Results from the project DP4lib show in addition how a service-oriented infrastructure for digital preservation services can be established. By implementing tie project was learned that much more important than technical tools is the workflow-related work, and here especially quality assurance, verifiable processes, predictable costs, reliable reporting, and documentation of history.

Poster presentations are becoming an integral part of conferences and an increasingly popular form of scientific communication. These sessions give more time to present one's ideas and interact one-to-one with like-minded participants as compared to paper presentations where limited time slot is allotted. No serious studies seems to have been undertaken in India to assess the value of poster presentations. How to plan a Poster Presentation and some of the DOs and DON'Ts are outlined in this paper.

Paper describes the e-books, its development, design, merits, demerits, and issues and concerns of different stakeholders of e-books in Indian perspectives. The emergence of e-books is going to supplement the contents of printed books instead of replacing them. The quality of the content and users' abilities to assess that quality influences the use of e-books within academic and research community. To promote the usage of e-books while librarians need to educate users as well as staff about the benefits in use of e-books, the users require a paradigm shift in their attitude away from the current perception that everything must be on the printed page to the varied better possibilities offered by e-books. The publishers, vendors and librarians need to work together on more mutually congenial and beneficial business models for greater e-book usage.

Study addresses the health information needs, sources and information seeking behaviour of women living in a rural palm plantation community in Nigeria, using data collected through focus group discussion (FGD) and a questionnaire.Majority of the women were married, aged about 31 years, mainly Christian traders, and have a mean household size of 5.6.Most of them have secondary level education and are low income earners. They owned and used radios more than other electronic devices, and they sought health information mainly for themselves and their children. About nine out of every ten reported that they needed information about malaria, which they obtained mainly from friends/families or chemist shops. The FGD revealed that the women relied on traditional sources for health information; they practiced self-medication guided by prior diagnosis and visited the hospitals only when their illnesses went out of hand. There was an intriguing observation of referral practices from modern to traditional healers; they had low consciousness about HIV/AIDS and poor knowledgeab out behavioural aspects of illnesses. The long distance to the general hospitals and the exorbitant fees charged by the private hospitals discouraged their use of modern health facilities. There was also low trust and confidence on the services, competence and adherence to ethical standards by the modern health care providers. Just as health workers in the community require reorientation to fit in the setting, the women also require intensive awareness and literacy intervention to increase their person-efficacy and reduce the effect of cultural glass ceiling that disempowers them, and promotes reliance on quack medical services.
