Paper discusses the evolution and development of library catalogues from clay tablets to the web-based catalogue. In the early stages, cataloguing was a local and individual library practice. Each library constructed its own catalogue, most suited to its purpose. A series of continuous changes through the ages, in both, conventional and non-conventional catalogues, including recent technology inputs added various features to the present day catalogue. Today the computerised catalogue may function like a portal and this function can be exploited infinitely to connect to a variety of data considered useful for library users. The system designers are trying to adopt new trends in OPACs. Web-based catalogues initiated Web 2.0 trends like RSS feeds, blogs, downloadable e-media, and instant messages. The facelift of the simple catalogue was eminent to keep up with the versatile needs of the widely web-exposed library users.

The importance of this function to library's usage value continues to be more demanding in the e-content world. However, the multitude of choices offered and controls exercised by the content creators and providers (authors, publishers, aggregators, and distributors) and the laws that regulate the ownership, pricing, and usage rights of e-content makes the collection development process one of the most challenging functions in the libraries of digital world today. It is a very different process demanding the libraries to redefine their purpose and functions. This article is a broad sketch of emerging challenges of e-collection development and the changes it will bring in other key functions of the libraries. Recorded knowledge in the form of manuscripts, print documents, microforms, CD-ROMs, computer files, etc., is increasing exponentially. To locate and access relevant information from this vast amount of literature, efforts have been made from time and on to develop various tools and techniques. Early evolved tools/techniques include: library catalogues, indexes, concordances, and so on. Information retrieval systems played a vital role in the field of information and librarianship to find relevant information from vast number of documents. Recently, intelligent agents gained importance as they are able to query databases and resources on Internet and remote library catalogues, thereby reducing information overload on the users. Another technology that alleviates the information overload problem is the filtering or recommender systems. The purpose of development of recommender system is to provide useful and most relevant recommendations or suggestions from number of available alternatives. The present study is aimed at design and development of content-based document recommender system (CODORS) to retrieve most relevant technical documents without necessarily matching title terms and closely related to a particular search term(s) as opposed to general Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) search results. The developed CODORS converts term's expressed by the user in natural language automatically into subject descriptors, carry on search, ranks, and retrieves documents.

There is an increasing interest in science communication and promotion of new inventions in this deluge digital information age. The social media tools available on the Internet assist the promotion of science dramatically and the change is happening in real time models. Expansion of World Wide Web and newer technologies has improved the ways in which science is communicated and its evaluation techniques. The use of conventional metric tools gauges the impact of scholarly publications using citation and download counts. They are widely used to evaluate articles, authors and disciplines on publishers' platforms. These tools analyse the citation data in natural course of time and make them available over a period of time. 'Altmetrics' is a concept that addresses and measures the conversations happening in the virtual world in real time. The concept supports the prediction mechanism of possible citations for an article in future, if it gets cited in the social media. This paper attempts to create awareness about 'Altmetrics' among Indian scholars and takes a closer look at various features available in 'Altmetric Explorer' in order to gain insights of the rapidly changing science communication landscape.
