016904 Ziaur Rahman M;Bhattacharya U (NO, , ) : Doctoral theses in physics submitted to University of North Bengal: a pattern of citation analysis. Indian J Inf Source Serv 2013, 3(1), 13-20.
Study is based on 8,182 citations appended to 50 doctoral theses in Physics, submitted to the North Bengal University, Darjeeling, during 1987 to 2007, with an average number per thesis comes at a range of 163.64. The study of the citations is carried out with a view to ascertaining what types of documents are the most frequently used in the research process. The study indicates authorship trend was towards team works rather than a work in isolation. Single author contributions, even though shown a decreasing tendency, are still on stage. Chronological variation in the various characteristics of the cited literature was also examined. It is observed that most of the publications cited are articles in journals; the number of references to other kinds of documents such as books/ monographs, patents, conference proceedings, reports, and other theses is small; and references like official publications, press articles and Internet documents are rare. Among the citations from journal literature, majority are from foreign journals though the journals of Indian origin have also extensively used by the North Bengal University Physics researchers. Journals published in USA, India, Netherland and UK occupies premier positions while journals from other countries are also cited. The most frequently cited journal titles were the The Physics Letter, Physics Review A, Mol. Cryst. Liq. Crystal. The findings from this study could serve as a collection development, a model that libraries could use to identify the primary sources, budget planning, to guide collection maintenance and user services design in libraries.

It is beyond controversy that the libraries are for the benefit of the readers. The objective of a library is to produce better citizens, happier people and finally a better society. Libraries furnish information on all subjects, provide the means of self-education in order to help people to participate intelligently in society and give an opportunity of reading for pleasure as well as educational purposes. In the event we were to look back to hundred years, we would find these ideas quite unknown to that age, but in the modern age, library is an essential part of the educational resources. It has grown with the schools, colleges, and universities and shares with them the onerous responsibility for helping to maintain and to promote heritage, freedom and opportunity. A study of world history and civilization has evidence to prove that libraries in some form or other existed in all ages as a part of social fabric. Libraries can be classified into live groups. Firstly, there are national libraries, the main purpose of which is to collect and preserve books and other printed matter. Secondly, there are special libraries which deal with specific subjects for the benefit of special readers. Libraries of industries, firms, Government research organization and professional bodies come under this segment. Thirdly, there are public libraries which aim at providing reading materials for the community. Fourthly, there are private libraries which are owned and looked after by intellectuals. Finally, there are academic libraries for universities. Academic libraries are for research and educational needs of the students. Books and printed matters have a great place in life. They are the reliable and abiding companions in the pilgrimage of life. They give us both light and delight. The purpose of this paper is to investigate to explore the literature of service quality and user satisfaction of the academic libraries. It reviewed the knowledge contributions of previous studies in the area of Service quality and user satisfaction. The endeavour was to examine the extent of the knowledge contribution on this study.

National consolidation of published and unpublished literature in the field of biomedical sciences can play a major role in scholarly communication to help the end users in providing research published in the country. Institutional repositories are a good approach for a cost-effective publishing with a cooperation and participation of each institution for capturing, preserving, managing, and nurturing the discussion. In turn, metadata can be harvested centrally to access the digital information of common interest whereas individual libraries should able to preserve digital assets. Institutionalisation mode has been recommended for building national digital repository system for the country. The public funding should be provided to apex body so as to formulate the requisite policies for the spread of open access movement in the country and also formulate a long term sustainable model for building national level system in the country.

Study is based on 8,478 citations appended to 43 doctoral theses in Zoology, submitted to the North Bengal University, Darjeeling, during 1987 - 2007, with an average of 197.6 per thesis. The study of the citations is carried out with a view to ascertain the types of documents most frequently used in the research process. The study indicates that the authorship trend is towards team works rather than a work in isolation. Single author contributions, even though shown a decreasing tendency, are still on stage. Chronological variation in the various characteristics of the cited literature was also examined. It is observed that most of the publications cited are articles in journals; the number of references in other kinds of documents such as books/monographs, patents, conference proceedings, reports, and other theses are small; and references like official publications, press articles and Internet documents are rare. Among the citations from journal literature, majority arc from foreign journals though the journals of Indian origin have also extensively used by the North Bengal University Zoology researchers. Journals published in USA, UK and India occupies premier positions while journals from other countries are also cited. The most frequently cited journal titles were the Journal of Immunology, Indian. Journal of Experimental Biology. Advance Immunology. The findings from this study could serve as a collection development model that libraries could use to identify the, primary sources, budget planning, to guide collection maintenance and user services design in libraries.

Recent surge in India's scientific output, and the publication-driven authors' careers have together eroded the focus on ethical conduct in scientific practices. Consequently, there has been a significant rise in allegations of misconduct and retractions of papers from India. According to the US Office of Research Integrity (ORI), scientific misconduct essentially includes 'fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, conducting, or reporting research'. Unlike develoaped countries, India does not have a system of scientific policing that includes empowered regulatory bodies, well defined procedures for investigations, vigilance towards fraudulent scientific practices and awareness about basic codes of ethical scientific conduct. The Indian government, universities and research organizations should come together and frame laws that would not only keep vigil on the ethical legitimacy of scientific publications but also initiate appropriate punitive actions whenever there is a breach of scientific ethics. This article discusses the various aspects of scientific misconduct including the different definitions, interpretations, procedures for investigation and strategies for implementing a comprehensive system for investigating scientific misconduct and minimizing malpractices in the rapidly expanding arena of Indian scientific enterprise.

Open access journals are the one's which are available online to the reader without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet. Some of the scholarly journals are subsidised, and some require payment. However, a number of challenges remain, such as high and rising subscription prices to scientific publications, an ever-growing volume of scientific data, and the need to select, curate, and preserve research outputs. Open access benefits researchers, innovators, teachers, students, media professionals, and the general public. It promotes global knowledge flow for the benefit of scientific discovery, innovation, and socio-economic development.

Microbicides are compounds currently under development that would be applied topically to the vagina or rectum and would have the ability to prevent the sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome. The study aims to explore the progress and foresight in microbicides development using research papers' analysis. The 317 records were downloaded from the PubMed with the search strategy: (i) "Microbicide [ti]" and (ii) "HIV prevention[ti] + methods[ti] + women[ti]" till November 2010. Majority of the papers (280, 88.33%) appeared during the recent decade (2001-2010). Of the 133 publishing journals, only four journals, viz., Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Antimicrob Agents and Chemotherapy, Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, and AIDS contributed one-fourths (80 papers, 25.24%) of the total papers published by researchers from 22 countries with US on the top of the tally. The recent decade has witnessed considerable growth in research output in this field while a successful microbicide still remains elusive. Leading countries in terms of research output like the USA, UK, South Africa, and India are those often directly affected by HIV. An international journal of microbicides R&D may emerge shortly to take care of the growing research in microbicides.
