In this paper an attempt has been made to study the Growth pattern, doubling time of world and Indian Genetics literature. The Knowledge of Genetics being basic to progress in biology, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, forensic sciences and many other fields, results of such studies are found highly useful. There are several dimensions of national science indicators that can be used to study different aspects of the research output in the field of Genetics and its ten subfields. Branch wise contribution indicates maximum growth in the branch of Human Genetics with the major contribution of 3,87,605 publications during this block period,(1993-2002) followed by Molecular Genetics (3,87,323); Medical Genetics (1,51,497); Population Genetics (65,910); Genetic Engineering (68,163); Genomics (54907); Developmental Genetics (50,445); Quantitative Genetics (48,060); Microbial Genetics (25,774); and Evolutionary Genetics (23,732). During both the block periods (1993-2002 and 2003-2012) Evolutionary Genetics has lesser number of publications. Study finally inferred that the Logarithmic and Linear growth models fit well for World's genetics literature whereas for India Exponential and Logistic models fit well.

The paper highlights the publication productivity of Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel Laureate poet of India. He has published 199 Bengali books during 1878-1941 and 36 titles were published posthumously making it 235 Bengali books to his credit. In his seventies (the last decade of his life), when he ventured into the world of painting, surprisingly his literary productivity increased considerably instead of going down. He published as many as 55 books apart from producing 2000+ paintings. Tagore's productivity encompassed all branches of literature, i.e. poems, dramas, letters, novels, essays, songs, travelogues, comedies, short stories, addresses, textbooks and autobiography. His productivity coefficient for Bengali books is 0.84 which indicates that he had a steady publication record throughout his literary career. He has published 91 out of 95 short stories in 16 communication channels. Publication density of short stories is 5.69, publication concentration is 12.5 and productivity coefficient for short stories stands at 0.32.

Foresight, a science and art, that helps human beings to know the future events, opportunities, and threats and to wisely choose the optimal futures from among possible (exploratory) ones and to consider future as an uncertain and instable setting. Foresight is the process of developing a range of views of possible ways in which the future could develop, and understand these sufficiently well to be able to decide what decisions can be taken today to create the best possible tomorrow. Scientometrics addresses science measurement in different areas and its overall objective is measuring the creation, distribution and consumption of science both quantitatively and qualitatively. Both scientometrics and foresight are interdisciplinary and are quite similar in observing scientific activities, analyzing the trends, scientific prospective and predictions. Indeed, making use of foresight means taking action for making policies in order to realize an optimal future through which a number of other helpful results would be obtained: developing new networks and communications, goal-setting and enhancing the sense of shared commitment, publishing the information, and prioritizing the options and actions. In this paper, the authors try to examine and elaborate the mutual relationship between scientometrics and futurology in different scientific texts then they will discuss the status and role of scientometrics as a tool for foresight-related studies.

Collnet J Scientomet Inf Mgmt 2015, 9(2), 263-93.
Novelty of nanotechnology and its invaluable application in almost all fields makes innovation in this sector an interest for many countries, including Canada and the United States. The collaboration between academia and industry is considered to be particularly beneficial in nanotechnology, as it is an emerging field where the science is interdisciplinary and applications are far and wide. This paper compares the nanotechnology innovation diffusion and knowledge transfer in Canada and the United States. In addition, it investigates the interaction between universities and industry in these countries and analyzes their network characteristics to highlight the distinct roles that academic and industrial researchers play in the collaboration network. The collaboration patterns are studied through co-authorship and co-inventorship data using social network analysis. The results show that the American nanotechnology subnetwork involves more collaboration, and is more centralized than the Canadian one. Moreover, in the aforesaid countries it was found that both academic researchers collaborating strictly within academia and industrial researchers working solely among themselves occupy more clustered but less central network positions. Consequently, no matter how productive or innovative these researchers are, their role in knowledge transmission is quite limited, while the researchers who bridge the two sectors through collaborations of university-industry nature are critical to the knowledge transfer through the network.

Collnet J Scientomet Inf Mgmt 2015, 9(2), 131-43.
Editors of journal are the gatekeepers to hold the quality and direction of journal. Normally the editors of the journal are served as the "academic authority" in the corresponding discipline. Due to the limitation of the academic authority, it's common that one expert takes the editor for many journals, which is called the interlocking editorship phenomenon. Base on this, we firstly built a social network matrix of the editorial board members about CSSCI journals of Library and Information Science. After that, we utilized the K-cores analysis of SNA to separate the network structure and to find the core subgroup, used the centrality analysis to verify the core of the core subgroup nodes. Secondly, we counted the number of published papers in the past five years, the total cites and total downloads about this papers, and H index of total editorial board members. All of this data of bibliometrics reflects the academic performance of the editorial board member in the past five years. And then we proofed the academic quality of journals through the data. At last, we discussed some problems which exist in the current regime.

Indian J Anaesth 2015, 59(12), 294-800.
There is an increasing enthusiasm and pressure to submit scientific articles to journals for publication due to official policies. This has led to increased stress on authors and editors and in issues like plagiarism. We planned a cross-sectional study with an aim to explore the current publication related views and practice of faculty members and consultants. We conducted a questionnaire based prospective survey with 22 questions divided into parts. Print and electronic versions were sent to around 18,270 members in total, a majority of whom were anaesthesiologists and 600 members responded to our questionnaire. A database was created and analysed using Microsoft Excel. About 80% felt that online journals were better read than print journals. Eighty eight percent agreed that publications improve academic skills. The Medical Council of India requirements to publish in reputed journals were cited as the main reasons for plagiarism. The publication rule had become a burden for 46% respondents. Review articles were most likely to be read though clinical investigations were considered to be of maximum academic significance. Review/publishing time followed by author requirements and journal indexing were the points our respondents liked to see most when choosing a journal for article submission. The survey results depict the current author related views and trends in publication practice which may guide in evidence-based policy making.

This study attempts to present the library's and librarian's view point of dealing with remainder books and sensitise librarians and researchers about the trade in remainder books which enter the market disguised as genuine books and sold as such despite instructions from government, trade agencies and libraries about selling remainders. Based on the available literature on the trade of remainder books, a case study has been attempted in the light of the book acquisition activity of one year for a University Library. Since there is no explicit declaration from booksellers about which titles they supply are remainders, libraries have to resort to indirect options to identify them. It has been observed that over 80% of the books procured in a typical higher education library in the country are in English language. Of these, though 51% of books are either printed in India or priced in Indian Rupees, the remaining 49% of books have prices in foreign currencies. Out of a panel of over 50 book suppliers involved in supplying books of interest to the said Library, it was found that 12 suppliers actively canvassed for more number of books through frequent visits, providing large number of titles on approval for examination and through continuous interactions with teachers. Around 76% of the money spent for purchasing books is canvassed by these 12 suppliers for supplying 51% of the books procured. They supplied 2559 titles in English priced in foreign currencies (around 76% of such cases); out of which 68% only are published in the last four years. It was confirmed that over 32% of the procured books priced in foreign currencies are published at least four years before the year of purchase and some or many of these titles might have entered the country through the remainder route. The publisher never informs libraries about throwing a particular title in the remainder market. Similarly the importer/distributor/bookseller never certifies about the receipt of such a title through that route. It has also been observed that documents to support a remainder title being procured as genuine are made overnight by trade parties as per the demands of individual libraries. Due to the lack of actual data concerning remainder books in the country which the importers, distributors, booksellers and other entities are trying to closely guard from public and libraries, there are not many studies on remainder books deterrent measures to be taken by libraries which is adversely impacting the quality of book collection in libraries.

In literature, a number of factors have been reported as affecting citations to articles. This paper is intended to find out if the number of citations made to an article was associated with title length and number of punctuation marks in titles. The article also attempts to determine the most/least frequently used punctuation marks in article titles, and to study titling features in top-30 articles in the dataset examined. To extract the data, ISI Web of Science was searched using the fields, source 'SO = Scientometrics' and publishing year 'PY = 2009-2011'. In all, 650 article titles constituted the sample data of the study. To determine title length in words and in characters (with no spaces), the 'word count' option - 'statistics' - in Microsoft Word was used. The types and number of punctuation marks were extracted using the 'find and replace' option in Microsoft Word. Data analysis revealed that the two variables title length and citations to articles were not correlated; the number of punctuation marks could not be used as a variable to predict an article's citation rate with certainty; 'colon', 'hyphen' and 'coma' were most frequent while 'semi-colon', 'dash' and 'single quotation marks' were least frequent punctuation marks; out of the 30 top titles, 23 included at least one punctuation mark; from the top-10 titles, 9 titles encompassed a punctuation mark and the article receiving the highest amount of citations along with 5 more articles had a question mark in their titles. The average title length in characters with no spaces was 73 in the top-30 titles.

Ever since library consortia were established in India, academic and research libraries started gaining online access to more number of journals than what they were individually subscribing before. To find out how well Indian researchers make use of the additional resources, the use made of journals either for publishing or for citing by researchers in three Indian institutions - a unitary university, a CSIR laboratory and a DAE theoretical research institution was examined. It was found that in all three institutions, not more than 20% of journals for which they have access through consortium or through their own funds as part of their subscription have been used. Thus the large number of journals that publishers offer through their big deals seem to benefit the publishers rather than the researchers. It is suggest that academic and research librarians in India and library consortia use citation analysis as an "aid in pruning subscriptions to unused journals, eventually alleviating misapportioned moneys spending in the serials selection process".

The study explores performance assessment models in academic libraries and show-cases the practical experiences at the Covenant University Library. The paper which is based on an observational study of the researchers' daily work experiences and review of literature identified constraints to performance assessment in academic libraries and has attempted to give solutions. The paper concludes that academic libraries should overcome constraints and imbibe the culture of performance assessment that involves a continuous and periodic process of fine-tuning critical management and functional processes, either reactively or proactively through deliberately designed parameters (indicators). It extrapolated from the unique experiences of the Centre for Learning Resources, Covenant University to construct a model (Lib-PERFQUAL) for libraries around the world. This is a model that comprises all indicators necessary to maintain continuous relevance and achieve utmost efficiency.

Traces the origin of the term librametry. Shows how librametry has helped Ranganathan to develop the staff formula for different libraries, and it can help in decision making relating to the establishment of rural and branch libraries; dormitory and service libraries. His maintenance of statistics of various library activities showed the growth pattern of library collection, use of the collection by users, busy and very busy hours in the circulations and reference sections, and so on. He also developed a method for optimal procurement of books for every department in the university. Ranganathan also showed statistically that on average Colon class numbers are shorter than DC class numbers. With the passage of time bibliometrics overshadowed librametrics. Ranganathan did not define librametrics, neither he isolated its components. The lacunae have been filled in this article. It has also been shown that a substantial part of librametrics is occupied by bibliometrics.

Instead of relying on intuition, a deliberate understanding of the Principles for Helpful Sequence as recognised by Ranganathan would be more useful in bringing out effective products. The paper first outlines the eight Principles for Helpful Sequence and then goes on to explore the relevance of each of these eight principles to a wide range of technical documents. The paper concludes that an understanding of these principles is part of the core competencies of technical writers even in the web environment.

Classification is the basis of knowledge organization. Ontology, a comparatively new concept used as a tool for knowledge organization, establishes connections between terms and concepts enhancing the scope and usefulness of library classification. Ranganathan had invented the strong theory of the analytico-synthetic method in classification and devised Colon Classification. In this study a domain ontology on library and information science has been developed by implementing Raganathan's faceted approach of classification. The hierarchical relationships among terms have been established primarily keeping conformity with that of Ranganathan's Colon Classification (7th edition). But to accommodate new vocabularies, DDC 23rd edition and UDC Standard edition are consulted. The Protege ontology editor has been used. The study carefully examines the steps in which the analytico-synthetic method have been followed. Ranganathan's Canon of Characteristics and its relevant Canons have been followed for defining the class-subclass hierarchy. It concludes by identifying the drawbacks as well as the merits faced while developing the ontology. This paper proves the relevance and importance of Ranganathan's philosophy in developing ontology based knowledge organization.

This paper reviews Ranganathan's description of subject from mathematical angle. Ranganathan was highly influenced by Nineteenth Century mathematician George Cantor and he used the concept of infinity in developing an axiomatic interpretation of subject. Majority of library scientists interpreted the concept of subject merely as a term or descriptor or heading to include the same in cataloguing and subject indexing. Some library scientists interpreted subject on the basis of document, i.e. from the angle of the concept of aboutness or epistemological potential of the document etc. Some people explained subject from the viewpoint of social, cultural or socio-cultural process. Attempts were made to describe subject from epistemological viewpoint. But S R Ranganathan was the first to develop an axiomatic concept of subject on its own. He built up an independent idea of subject that is ubiquitously pervasive with human cognition process. To develop the basic foundation of subject, he used the mathematical concepts of infinity and infinitesimal and construed the set of subjects or universe of subjects as continuous infinite universe. The subject may also exist in extremely micro-form, which was termed as spot subject and analogized with point, which is dimensionless having only an existence. The influence of Twentieth Century physicist George Gamow on Ranganathan's thought has also been discussed.

Any librarian in this field will need to continue not only filling these roles, but also ensuring that they themselves are part of the conversation as it moves forward and staying up-to-date with developments within this area. The concept of library involvement pertaining to metrics did not originate with altmetrics. Impact Factor was originally created primarily for use by librarians in making collection development and retention decisions. Libraries continue to bear primary responsibility for the acquisition of bibliometrics tools, most notably Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, and Scopus, as well as the training of people in their use. As a result, librarians are already familiar with providing support for these tools, so it makes sense that librarians have expanded to support the variety of altmetrics sources and tools. Additionally, librarians serve as natural leaders when it comes to altmetrics, not only due to familiarity with resources, but also because of the relationships they maintain with several disparate groups. The article detailed about the various tools, section, evaluation methods in which libraries and librarians are supporting and interacting with altmetrics.
