The individual and interactive effects of needling parameters (depth of penetration and punch density) and web parameters (fibre orientation, fibre linear density and fabric weight) on air permeability, compressibility, compressional recovery and bending length properties of hollow polyester needle-punched nonwoven fabrics have been studied using Box-Behnken experimental design. Needle-punched fabrics have been made from cross-laid as well as parallel-laid webs. It is observed that as the web gets more consolidated, the compressibility decreases, recovery increases and stiffness generally increases. Finer denier fibres and parallel-laid webs lead to more consolidation in the fabric. Cross-laid structures show higher compressibility and lower recovery as compared to parallel-laid structures.

The pilling of a series of worsted fabrics made from wool/polyester fibres has been tested using circular locus pill tester and the mechanism of pilling studied. The process and the mechanism of pilling have been studied through the observation of fibre morphology on fabric surface by using scanning electron microscope. It is observed that the conditions of test, structure of yarn, wool content and property of polyester fibres affeect the pilling of worsted fabrics.

Low-temperature plasma (LTP) treatment using oxygen gas has been applied to wool fabric. The LTP-ireated fabric hast been tested for its properties, such as tensile strength, elongation, tearing strength, shrinkage and colour fastness, using different international standard testing methods and the results compared with the industrial requirements. It is observed that the LTP-treated wool fabrics meet the industrial requirements. LTP treatment is found to increase extensibility and decrease tearing strength and shrinkage tendency of the fabric with overall improved fastness properties.

The influence of process variables on characteristics of modal siro-spun yarns has been studied using Box-Behnken response surface design. The characteristics of these yarns have been evaluated and compared with those of equivalent double-rove spun yarns. It is observed that the increase in strand spacing from 6 mm to 10 mm increases the unevenness and decreases the hairiness, strength and extension of modal siro-spun yarns. The traveller mass and spindle speed show varying effects on characteristics of siro-spun yarns. Taking the effects of all the three experimental factors into account, it has been found that the yarn unevenness is minimum and elongation is maximum at lower levels of factors while the hairiness is minimum at their higher levels. The yarns exhibit maximum tenacity and fewer imperfections at middle levels of the factors. Hence, the strand spacing of 8 mm, traveller mass of 1/o and spindle speed of 17000 rpm are found to produce siro yarns of nominal count (30 tex) with optimum quality. Further, the siro-spun yarns are found to be relatively inferior in respect of unevenness and superior as regards the hairiness when compared with the equivalent double-rove spun yarn.

Dyes have been extracted from the barks of Mimusops elengi and Terminalia arjuna and the chemical constituents of the colour components responsible for dyeing identified. The dyeing behaviour of these colour components on wool has also been evaluated. Depending on the concentrations of dye (1-6%) in the dye bath, the dye absorption on the fibre varies from 21.94% to 27.46% and from 5.18% to 10.78% respectively for the dyes extracted from M. elengi and T. arjuna. The colour components isolated from the barks of the two plant varieties mainly contain flavonoid moiety. The dyed and post-mordanted wool exhibits better fastness properties and therefore these dyes might be an alternative to synthetic dyes.

The influence of spinning parameters on the weavability of cotton dref-2 yarn manufactured on dref-3 machine has been studied. It is observed that the maximum weavability is obtained at friction drum speed of 5000 rpm and delivery speed of 100 m/min. Sizing improves the weavability of dref-2 yarn. The improvement in weavability due to sizing is higher for low-weavability grey yarn as compared to that for the high-weavability yarn produced using optimum spinning parameters. However, the absolute weavability cycles of the best grey yarn still remain maximum after sizing.

Most of the companies worldwide are shifting towards ECF, TCF bleaching technology by eliminating chlorine dioxde and hypo chlorite and also in paper making from acid sizing to alkaline sizing. Worldwide survey of ASPs is indicating the Bulking Problem more in ECF &TCF bleaching than the Chlorine and Hypo conventional bleaching. As JKPM moving towards ECF bleaching, alkaline sizing paper technology, low water consumption in process and close looping of the system, high concentration of pollulant with high temperature effluent is generated. Hence, JKPM modified the existing effluent treatment system with a New Activated Sludge Process with cooling Tower. Due to the effective control of ETP process parameters by Operators, JKPM achieved the best result of BOD, COD, SS and pH of out going discharge treated effluent on a continuous basis.

Evaporators are widely used in the chemical process industries (paper, sugar, glycerin etc.) to concentrate a solution, to recover solvents (optional) or to reuse the heat of the solvent in the same or ancillary units. A generalized algorithm was earlier developed (1) for design and simulation of long tube black liquor multiple effect evaporator system (MEE) with mixed feed sequence in pulp & paper industry. In this investigation the above algorithm is extended for mixed feed with condensate and product flash for additional advantages of energy gains and higher steam economy in mixed feed sequence. Models are based on steady state mass balance, enthalpy balance and beat tranfer rate equations interlinked with over all heat transfer coefficient obtained from Gudmundson's model (2) and suitable correlations of physico-thermal properties of black liquor as wll as the BPR values as a function of temperature and concentration which are proposed by Ray et.al. (3). A program is developed in FORTRAN- 77 language. The numerical technique used is Newton- Raphson method with Jacobian matrix & methods of Gauss Elimination with partial pivoting supplemented with LU decomposition with the aid of Hilbert Norms.

Co-operation between pulp and paper industry and synthetic polymer industry is showing upward trend. New products has been developed from the raw materials of both industries with functional properties that could not be achieved by using material from only one industry. The evidence of growing co-operation between the paper and synthetic polymer industry can be seen from leading paper making and paper converting firms diversifying their manufacturing activities in to fields of plastics in some cases replacing paper with plastics. Previously paper was made only from wood pulp and hence it did not have much durability. In order to improve the durability and mechanical strength of natural fibres; synthetic polymer pigments and fillers are added. These materials increase mechanical properties such as tear resistance, burst factor, breaking length etc. In this study we observed the improvement in the quality of paper when it is blended with nylon 66 and poly-formaldehyde resin. They have been added in different percentage and sheets were made. The remarkable improvements in the mechanical properties have been investigated.

Addition of polysulphide (PS) during the pulping is investigated in the laboratory. Polysulphide was found to be advantageous to extend the cooking. The polysulphide pulping of Populus deltoids Marsh shows benefits gained were in terms of increased pulp yield without considerably affecting the quality of the pulp. The tear and burst values of the PS pulps were found to be slightly lower, while the tensile index values were found to be comparable with that of kraft pulp. The results demonstrate the better utilization of fibrous raw material for paper-making in terms of increased pulp yield and better physical and other strength properties of paper.

Oxygen delignification is a proven approach in the pulp and paper industry to redurce the residual lignin that is the lignin resident in the pulp following the kraft pulping process ^(1-2). Conventional kraft pulping was performed at different active alkali charge (16% to 22% AA). The pulps at the optimum condition (20% AA, sulfidity 25% and kappa number 24.8). was bleached with different variables like oxygen pressure (kept constant), alkali charge, temperature, and consistency. The effect of sodium hydroxide charge on the kappa number reduction comparatively smaller. An increased temperature accelerate considerably the oxygen delignification process. Brightness of oxygen treated pulp sheets inceased with decrease in kappa number. Partially bleached pulps made with oxygen at different conditions were treated with DEH blraching sequence and other were fully bleached with CEH sequence. Both pulps were comparable in strength properties, whereas the brightness significantly increased in ODEH bleaching.

Subsequently, the issues of Kappa profile management using two controller strategies namely, decentralized PI and linear Model Predictive Control are explored for a representative 5x5 problem. Grade transition via effective Kappa profile management is presented.

Clays belong to economic class of fillers, which are used extensively in rubbers and plastics. Being non-reinforcing in nature there are limitations for its use. If the properties of filler are modified it will get higher value as a filler. To achieve this modification of surface properties use of coupling agents is one of the avenues. Effect of treatment of titanate coupling agent on clay has been studied with chloroprene as a matrix. Composites were made with varying proportion of untreated and treated clay. A two-roll mill was used for dispersing the filler in the rubber and compression moulding technique was used to cure the compound in sheet form. Tensile properties were measured on a computerized UTM, using ASTM procedure. Comparison of properties of composites filled with treated and untreated clay established that treatment of clay imparts better reinforcing properties. The properties under consideration were tensile strength, modulus at 100 and 400 per cent, Young's modulus, hardness, etc. Tensile strength was improved by 166 per cent, while modulus at 400 per cent was improved by 167 per cent. Similarly, Young's modulus also was improved by 155 per cent.

In continuous mode, treating effluent with the same fungus in a fluidized bed reactor, around 27 % colour reduction was achieved. This biologically treated effluent is further treated with a poly-electrolyte (potash alum) to improve the colour reduction. Maximum colour reduction of 81 % was obtained by this combined treatment.

Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) was used to study the immiscibility of a poiar nitrile rubber (NBR), blended with pure and waste, low and high density polyethylene (PE). The effect of weight percent of rubber added to PE was also investigated. It has been found that a complicated variation (positive and negative) in both free volume parameters (τ₃ & I₃) from the values of the initial polymers forms an immiscible blend. These results are supported by a significant broadening in the free-volume hole size distributions. This has been interpreted in terms of interfacial spaces created between the boundaries of the two phases. Furthermore, a correlation was established between the free-volume parameters (τ₃ & I₃) and the electrical and mechanical properties of the above-mentioned polymer blends as a function of weight percent of waste PE.
