The goal of cleaner production in pulp and paper industry can be achieved by adopting technological developments. When appropriate, environmental management procedures and clean technologies are applied to pulp and papermaking operations, the environmental impact of the pulp and paper industry is low and industry can be regarded as well adapted to the requirements of a sustainable society. It may not always be possible to incorporate the state of the art technologies into the existing process lines due to very many reasons, viz. cost of the technology, capital investment and compatibility of the technology with the materials used in the process. Keeping the indigenous users in view, some of the ideas were tried, especially in the area of reduction of residual lignin in pulp prior to bleaching process. This is achieved by solublizing and extraction of the part of the residual lignin in the alkaline medium. Any significant reduction of residual lignin in the unbleached pulp has positive impact on the bleaching process. Post digester delignification is a process by which use of chlorine and chlorine based bleach chemicals can substantially be reduced. Laboratory pulping studies of wheat straw with additive Aq followed byperoxy alkaline extraction indicated significant reduction of pulp kappa. Initial pulp kappa of22 (without Aq) could be reduced to 15 with addition of 0.03% of Aq. Soda-Aq pulp kappa could further be reduced up to 8 by using peroxy extraction process.

The study covers the coloration of cellulose fibres with four direct dyes. The prepared paper samples were of yellow, red, violet and orange colors in different shades using 0.5% dye (related to the absolutely dry fibrous materials). Also a cationic agent was used to improve the wet fastness of the dyes under investigation the coloration was evaluated by CIELab coordinates. The obtaine results indicated that the mechanical properties of paper sheets can be enhanced by increment of dye concentration, while an inhibition took place by: i-rising dyeing temperature, ii- increment of agent concentration. The relation between dye structure and mechanical properties was not clear.

Needle punched nonwoven samples from jute-polypropylene blended fibre in the proportion of 1:1 was made varying the needle gauge, needling density and depth of needle penetration. Surface appearance or the tracking behaviour in terms of tracking grade of the blended needle punched nonwoven fabric was evaluated by visual inspection and grading technique whereas the tensile properties i.e. tenacity and breaking strain were measured in Instron Tensile Tester. From the results of study on the tensile behaviour and surface appearance of the fabric it can be concluded that almost trackless fabric can be made with 300 punches/cm², 8 mm depth of needle penetration and 36 gauge needle whereas fabric with best tracking can be made with 200 punches/cm², 12 mm depth of needle penetration and 30 gauge needle.

Selected knitted and non-woven structures were evaluated for their thermal resistance values using thermolobo dry contact and dry spacer methods under simulated conditions of moderate wind to high windy conditions. The work shows that the selection of the materials and construction of the fibre network play a vital role in achieving high thermal resistance of clothing systems. Non-woven structures even though exhibit high thermal resistance under normal conditions, do not maintain the same level at higher wind velocities. The thermal insulation to both weight and thickness ratio play an important role in the design and development of extreme cold weather protective systems.

Kinetic and thermodynamic investigation of the fixing process of disperse dyes by dyeing of polyester/cotton materials in the presence of combination of intensifying additives caprolactam and polyethyleneglycol is carried out. It is found that intensifiers increase the rate of dyes fixing and influence favorably their sorption on the textile material. The higher values of the changing of the enthalpy and the entropy result from using a combination of caprolactam and polyethyleneglycol, as compared to polyethyleneglycol only. This fact can be attributed of the presence of the hydrotropic additive caprolactam.

The dimensional stability of thermoplastic filament yarns is decided by the residual shrinkage present in the yarn. The residual shrinkage is measured by either boiling water method or hot air method. Both these methods are time consuming and only short lengths are tested. The shrinkage force is measured by some instruments very quickly and long lengths of yarns are tested. So, in this study, a relation is developed between shrinkage and shrinkage force, so that the filament yarn manufacturer can predict the shrinkage of the yarn by quickly measuring the shrinkage force.

Recycling being a major environmental issue, recycled fibres from PET bottles have been used as a filler material in cushions. These cushions were evaluated for various properties such as compressional and thickness recovery, moth and mildew growth, thermal insulation and air permeability. It was found that, they posses various properties such as very good compressional and thieckness recovery, excellent resistance to moth and mildew growth, excellent thermal insulation and better air permeability. Thus, the cushions consisting recycled fibres not only show better performance than cushions filled with commercially available filler materials, but also reduce cost substantially.

Deletions of proportions of the X chromosome have been reported in a large number of patients, most which are isolated. Reports a mosaic long arm deletion of X chromosome (Xq-) in a women with primary amenorrhea. Chromosomal analysis using GTG-banding showed two cell lines (45,X/46,X,del(X)). The Fluorescence in situ hybridization study helped to detect the breakpoint at q13.3 region of the X chromosome and also enable to detect low grade third cell line with 47,XX,del(X)(q13.3). Hence, molecular cytogenetic methods are essential to detect low level mosaicism which is important in better counselling.

The influence of twisting jet pressure, delivery speed, nozzle distance, yarn linear density and yarn composition on the characteristics of polyester-cotton MVS yarns has been studied. Contrary to MJS yarns, the coarser yarns are stronger than the finer ones due to the higher proportion of load-bearing core fibres. The twisting jet pressure has a direct effect on the tensile characteristics of polyester-cotton MVS yarns and the optimum pressure is dependent on yarn linear density. Moreover, the use of excessive high jet pressure adversely affects yarn tensile characteristics. The use of higher nozzle distance improves the yarn tenacity; the latter, however, deteriorates at very high nozzle distance. A higher delivery speed produces weak, less rigid, less uniform and more hairy yarns.

The influence of twisting jet pressure, delivery speed, nozzle distance, yarn linear density and yarn composition on the structural parameters of polyester-cotton yarns spun on Murata Vortex Spinner (MVS 810) has been studied. It is observed that the MVS yarns have about 50 - 60% core fibres and remaining as wrapper or wild fibres. The structure of MVS yarn has been classified into four main categories, viz. tight wrappings, long wrappings, irregular wrappings and unwrapped. The tight wrappings are found to increase with the increase in jet pressure but at very high jet pressure, they get converted into irregular wrappings. The long wrappings increase with the nozzle distance while unwrapped structure decreases with both jet pressure and nozzle distance up to a certain level. The finer yarns have low proportion of core fibres. The wrapper and wild fibres increase with the jet pressure but at very high jet pressure of 6 kg/cm², the wild fibres increase significantly. An increase in delivery speed leads to a further increase in wild fibres.

The fibre bundle tenacity and strength uniformity have been determined at 0, 1.6, 3.2, 4.8 and 6.4 mm gauge lengths for some Indian cottons differing widely in physical characteristics. The results show that the longer and finer cottons are more uniform in strength. Significant positive correlation is found between bundle tenacity and 2.5% span length at higher gauge lengths, while linear density and fibre maturity exhibit significant negative correlation with bundle tenacity at higher gauge lengths.

Cotton hanks were dyed with three different sulphur dyes using non-sulphide reducing agents such as glucose, fructose, invert sugar and molasses. Invert sugar as a reducing agent and sodium carbonate as alkali proved to be better as this combination gave results comparable to those obtained with the conventional sodium sulphide dyeing with respect to depth and tone of dyeing. The fastness properties were also found to be comparable.

The fluctuation in spinning tension in ring spinning at different time scales, viz. long term (beginning to end of the cop build up), medium term (for winding a chase) and short term (for one revolution of a traveller) has been studied using Rothschild Tensiometer 2000 and a customized software. It is observed that the spinning tension decreases from the beginning to the end of the cop build up. Traverse of the ring rail and rotation of the traveller introduce periodicity to the spinning tension over which fluctuations arising out of the vibrations from the spindle are superimposed.

The influence of texturing parameters, such as draw ratio and heater temperature, on characteristics and dyeing behaviour of polyamide 66 yarn has been studied. It is observed that the draw ratio and heater temperature have negligible influence on dye exhaustion, but they both markedly influence the dyeing kinetics. This has been measured by apparent diffusion coefficients and discussed on the basis of crystallinity and degree of orientation data.

The tensile properties of jute-acrylic and jute-cotton dref-3 yarns with jute in core have been studied. The tenacity of dref-3 yarns was found to be lower but the strength translation efficiency of jute fibres was higher when used in the core jute-acrylic dref-3 yarn as compared to that when used in the flyer yarn structure. Stick-slip pattern of failure was observe in case of dref-3 yarns, whereas catastrophic failure was observed in case of jute flyer yarn. Breatang elongation and specific work of rupture of the dref-3 yarns were higher than those of the jute flyer yarn.
