The functioning of an alternating current (AC) voltage regulator based high voltage direct current (HVDC) power supplies with better input and output performances has been presented. The authors have incorporated a 3-phase series limiting inductor, along with detuned passive filter in each power supply, to take care of line harmonics and the input power factor (IPF), which is simple, cost effective, reliable and provides input performance matching that of an equivalent active filter. Such arrangement has special significance for controlled HVDC power supplies supplying to fixed load but operated from widely varying input voltages. It achieves line voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) below 4% and IPF better than 0.97, for 415V-30% to 415V+ 10% variations in 3-phase input voltages. A properly designed crowbar, along with suitable limiting elements, is incorporated in each power supply and stringent wire survivability tests were carried out to limit klystron fault energy below 10 Joules. Several simulated waveforms and experiment results are also presented.

Road planning and construction generally gives due importance to necessary standards and safety aspects, which contribute towards the road users' safety. Road maintenance is not however always given the required importance and attention, may be due to various factors such as: lack of planning for maintenance, inadequate funds, less maintenance staff or sometimes even lack of will towards safe maintenance system. Periodic repairs, special repairs or emergency repairs if attended to timely, render great help in achieving the objective of effective and economic transport operations. Moreover the trio, viz: (i) complete signs and pavement markings, (ii) through instructions at all necessary locations, and (iii) strict observance of traffic rules, not only guide and control the road users but compel them to adhere to safe driving practice keeping the number of accidents and subsequently the accident losses to a minimum. On the contrary, lack of any of the elements from this trio leads to erroneous decisions by the road users/drivers resulting in not only more accidents but also more fatal accidents and thus huge losses. It is intended to bring out the small, small things in maintenance planning and practice, which significantly contribute towards substantial increase in road users' safety. Frequent travelling between Port Macquarie and Sydney on the Pacific Highway (National Highway) in New South Wales, Australia, gave an opportunity to observe this.

The development and management of fresh groundwater resources in coastal aquifers are seriously constrained by the saltwater intrusion. The Dakshina Kannada district is one of the rapidly developing districts of Karnataka. Due to the increase in population, urbanization and industrialization, the district is facing severe shortage of freshwater resources during the summer period. Also, the rivers of the district are being seasonal and tidal in nature, saltwater intrusion into the adjoining aquifers during the non-monsoon period is greatly felt up to several kilometers inland along and around the river courses. The work is aimed at simulation of saltwater intrusion in the Gurpur and Pavanje river basin aquifers using SaturatedªUnsaturated Transport (SUTRA) model and comparing it with the field observations. The model is also used to predict the impact of increasing stress on freshwater aquifers due to the developmental activities. The results from the investigation indicate that the model prediction agrees well with the observed salinity levels in the study area. As such, the saltwater intrusion is not a severe problem in the region except a few pockets. The study also includes the evaluation of the basin characteristics through field tests and water quality/level observations through a network of wells. The coastal aquifers are predominantly shallow unconfined aquifers with transmissivity and specific yield values ranging from 49.2-461.4 m²1 day and 0.00058-0.2805 respectively. The aquifers along the river courses are getting contaminated during the summer months only and region in the proximity of the sea is affected throughout the year. The optimal pumping rates have also been worked out for the region with potential groundwater development to avoid the problem of saltwater intrusion. The results from the study would be useful in the sustainable groundwater development in the region.

This method guarantees stability of the reduced order model when the original high order system is stable. The methodology of the proposed method is illustrated with the help of examples from literature.

Inhibitory effects of methanol-water (90:10; v/v) extract from sage (Salvia officinalis L.), laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) and thyme (Thymbra spicata L.) were tested in vitro on clinical isolates of eleven species of yeasts (C. krusei, C. clus, Rhodotorula rubra, C. aibicans 10039, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata 70164, C. parasilosis, C. insane, C. rhodotonla, C. holmii and C. glabrata 13b). Preliminary experiment was carried out in vitro using the disc diffusion method to investigate antimycotic activity of the sage, laurel and thyme extracts. Thyme methanol extract showed very high antimycotic activity against all tested yeasts. Effect of laurel extract was as good as thyme extract for C. tropicalis at 40 ppm level. Generally, sage had no effect on the tested yeasts. Methanol extracts of thyme and laurel may be useful tools to control the yeasts growth.

Attempt has been made to explain the effectiveness of retro-reflective tape in enhancing the visibility of trucks by using retro-reflective tape on rear and sides. Also explains the experiences of other countries which have got success in reducing rear end and side crashes by using retro-reflective tape of red/white/ yellow colour. These tapes make rear end more visible under head light of other vehicles before coming dangerously closer to heavy vehicle. This Paper also advocates it's use in India.

The VCO achieved significant low phase noise characteristics of -131.04 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from the carrier frequency of 1.540GHz, at a bias current of 15 mA and voltage of 5V. It dissipates output power of -11.26 d Bm when supplying the control voltage of 1.9V. A tuning range of 141 MHz is achieved using integrated tuning BC diodes. This VCO shows a figure of merits (FoM) of -183 dBc/Hz, at the desired frequency. A chip size is optimized to 0.816 x 0.871 mm².

The first part is a review of the direct-integration method. The second part is a study of the geometry of the tunnel section, followed by the presentation of values of Geometric Elements, Hydraulic Elements, and Hydraulic Exponents in the form of graphs. The application examples highlighting the validation of the work are shown in the last section.

Cooling fans are one of the main noise sources in pumps. Noise reduction is perhaps one of the most important areas in optimizing the sea water pump. In the first phase CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis was performed for the existing fan to know the sound levels. The result so obtained from CFD analysis was compared with the experimental results obtained by conducting experiments in anechoic chamber. It is found that there is good agreement between numerical and experimental results. In the second phase an attempt has been made to reduce the noise level of existing cooling fan by redesigning the cooling fan using various digits of NA CA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) 63 and 65 series. The design has been optimized through CFD analysis using FLUENT 6.2 for sound levels. In the present work it is observed that the NACA 65-0UO produced minimum noise when compared with all other NACA Airfoil series and also it is observed that the smooth surface body will produce low noise and it is possible only for aerofoil shaped blade.

The staggered training work with current/flow at 90°to it revealed that it helps in reducing flow/sediment carrying capacity behind training work compared to solid continuous training work. Also staggered training work at 45° orientations would be suitable for reducing flow/ sediment carrying capacity in navigational channel on down flow side. Planning and constructing such training works at a distance of about one and half times its length on up-flow side of navigational channel would be beneficial to reduce siltation in navigational channel in complex tidal regimes like gulfs and creek confluence.

Effect of using fly ash/lime-fly ash/lime as filler in bituminous mixes is compared with the help of laboratory investigations. The Marshall stability and flow values have been determined to evaluate the strength and deformation characteristics. Evaluates the field performance, indirect tensile strength ratio, retained stability and permanent deformation etc. have been determined through various tests. Marshall properties of mixes with fly ash are on lower side as compared to lime- fly ash and lime mixes but generally meets the specification requirements. The indirect tensile strength increases with the increase in the fly ash content, which is an indicator of improved resistance against low temperature cracking and fatigue cracking. Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) and retained stability have increased with increase in fly ash content, indicating improved resistance to moisture resistance. However, permanent deformation has increased with the increase in fly ash content indicating an increase in rutting tendency.

Geometry of a hydrocyclone plays an important role in hydraulic and sediment removal efficiency. Analyses the experimental results of a test rig consisting of a hydrocyclone, 0.38 m in diameter with a modified geometry. The results were compared with that obtained by other investigators. The findings from the test results showed better hydraulic and sediment removal efficiency of the modified hydrocyclone compared to that of other existing hydrocyclones. Larger implications for suspended sediment exclusion in hydropower plants of Himalayan region are pointed out.

Diesel engines are used for automotive application because they have lower specific fuel consumption and superior efficiency compared to S.I engines. However in spite of these advantages NOx and smoke emissions from the diesel engines cause serious environmental problems. Pure vegetable oil poses some problems when subjected to prolong use in diesel engines. The problems are attributed to its high viscosity and low volatility. These problems can be minimized by the process of transesterification. In this study the transesterification reaction of refined coconut oil carried out with methanol using potassium hydroxide as a catalyst to produce methyl ester of biodiesel. The products were evaluated by comparing physical characteristics of biodiesel to conventional diesel oil. These characteristics included specific gravity, density, viscosity, pour point, flash point, fire point, heating value, etc. The biodiesel then tested in a diesel engine to observe their actual performance and emissions.Transesterified coconut oil has exhibited performance very close to that of diesel fuel with reduction in exhaust emissions, the critical reviews conducted on the different aspects of the vegetable oil as substitute fuel for diesel engine including its properties and their effects on performance and emission characteristics.

Involves the comparison of disc turbine, Rushton turbine and Pitched blade turbine in terms of mixing time and energy efficiency for the mixing of miscible liquids with density difference. Comparison is also based on the change in the tracer volume added as well as the effect of change of the impeller diameter. The study has been restricted to the stirrer controlled regime due to lower mixing times as compared to gravity controlled or intermediate regimes. Conductivity meter has been used to ascertain the total mixing time, which being the time required to reach a constant conductivity. Effect of amount of tracer fluid added, density difference with the bulk and also the type and geometry of the impeller on the mixing time has been investigated. The pitched blade turbine with lesser diameter is recommended amongst the different impellers studied in the work.

Urban road network configurations are developed among the demand and supply centres of multiple in a study area. The input like travel demand profiles with interactions patterns and intensity, static road network configurations with different characteristics like number of nodes and links are used for developing the system. Satellite data, GPS technology and GIS conceptualization are used for development of an approach. Mathematical models like gravity models, spanning tree algorithm are used to identify which links are to be newly developed and links to be widened. An approach with real time application is developed for a typical municipality taken in urban sprawl of metropolitan area.

Vibrations and noise are always associated with each other, and are harmful for the life and performance of the product; it reduces the overall value of the product. This work which discusses some of the options to reduce noise level in the petrol pumps is an outcome of the internship program of the students of VJTI (Veer Jijamata Technical Institute), Mumbai University at L&T Powai, Mumbai.

Emphasizes the need of extensive strata behaviour observations in experimental trials of innovative mining concepts in the present era of observational approaches preferred over, and many a times considered as safe adjunctive tools, to the numerical/analytical analysis of problem situations in mines. Rate of convergence of advance workings in depillaring panels has been widely believed by many Indian miners to be a reliable indicator for warning of goaf falls. The limitations of the warning limits, interpretation of the convergence data is hardly understood by many practicing front line supervisors or the advisory persons leading to misconception on strata mechanics and confusion in taking the decisions on safety of the workings and the face workers. Many accidents in depillaring panels in recent times are self revealing and emphasize the need of proper education to the concerned on the applicability of the existing guidelines and further studies require for the purpose. Numerical model studies and Field experimental studies were conducted on strata behaviour with special reference to convergence and stress variation during an experimental trial of extraction of pillars with cable bolts as major support system in 6.5 -8.0 m thick coal seam. Variation of stress, Convergence velocity and acceleration based on continuous monitoring data showed distinct anomalies and potential for better understanding of strata mechanics during pillar extraction. A suitable plan of instrumentation is also presented for generation of adequate data on strata behaviour during experimental trials of various innovative indigenous methods of extraction with a view to improve safety, productivity and conservation.

Metal objects/artifacts made of brass, copper, aluminium etc. tarnish on exposure to atmosphere. These require periodic cleaning of the oxidative coating by rubbing/polishing formulations. Similarly, other materials like, plastic, rexin, painted artworks, murals, rubber etc. become dull and unattractive with the passage of time. Restorers/commercially available grinding/polishing formulations do not provide long lasting protection from tarnishing of metal objects; also require periodic cleaning by rubbing/polishing. Consumers prefer use of a coating, which is more permanent in nature and avoids frequent application of restorer. A varnish formulation based on shellac and synthetic resin, has been developed; application of double coat (or more, if required) provides sheen on the surface, which remains unaffected for 2-3 years i.e., it eliminates frequent rubbing/polishing of the artifacts. The films of the varnish maintain glossy appearance for a period much longer than that of varnish from shellac alone or compared to commercial rubbing/polishing formulations even after exposure to environmental stress.

The study was done in combination with various scour protection devices around oblong bridge pier. The efficiency of scour protection devices was studied through experiments individually and in combination. In study, a number of protection devices have been tested for checking their performance individually and possible combinations of all these devices around oblong pier. These devices are a collar plate, a sleeve and a collared sleeve around the pier then vanes on upstream side of bridge pier and a delta wing like passive device at the upstream junction of pier. Initially, these individual devices were tested for their optimum dimensions and locations of single protection devices around the pier. Then, these devices were checked in combination for there best performance. The data showed that, combination of collars and vanes around oblong pier results in the most significant scour reduction of about 86.36%. From the results, it was found that combination of two devices is better than performance of individual device. The overall factor of safety for a composite device is much higher than that of any of the individual devices though the elements of risk and conditions warranting susceptibility to failure of a device do not get eliminated in a combination.

Sediment deposited or trapped in a reservoir can easily be quantified by the simple knowledge of its trap efficiency (T_e). Study methods proposed by Brown and Brune have been adopted to estimate T_e of Pong Reservoir (Beas Dam) on the Beas River in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The necessary modifications in the adopted methods have been made using the available data for this reservoir. This modification is basically to take into account the variation in trap efficiency with time.
