Fish diversity in Tarangwadi lake in Pune District Maharashtra has been studied. The study revealed the presence of twenty seven species of fish belonging to ten families in four orders (Cyprinidae, Osteoglossiformes, Siluriformes and Perciformes). The predominant orders of fishes in this area are Cypriniformes, Perciformes and Siluriformes. The highest number of ten species were recorded from the order Cypriniformes. The fishes recorded were found to be widely distributed and had good numbers in the lake.

The Collembolans are major part of soil biota. Their collection and identification require expertise hands to know the status of soil biota. Therefore, in present study Collembola fauna of different vegetation in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh region was studied from March, 2010 to March, 2012. Collembola specimens belonging to 13 genera under 8 families were collected. The predominant families were Hypogastruridae, Isotomidae, Entomobryidae, Paronellidae, Cyphoderidae, Neelidae, Sminthurididae and Katiannidae. The common identified genera are Hypogastrura, Folsomia, Folsomides, Isotomurus, Isotoma, Entomobrya, Seira, Salina, Lepidocyrtus, Cyphoderus, Neelus, Sminthurides and Sminthurinus. The preliminary identification characters of these genera are discussed in the paper.

Dialeurodes radiipuncta (Quaintance and Baker) and Dialeuropora murrayae (Takahashi) are reported for the first time from India.

Duttaphrynus scaber (Schneider) is known to occur in the southern Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats and northeastern India. However, there is no report of its occurrence from the northern Western Ghats from the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Here we report the occurrence of this species from the northernmost limit of the Western Ghats, a substantial range extension (approx. 550km) from the nearest known locality. We confirm our identification on the basis of morphology by comparing our specimens with a previously collected Duttaphrynus scaber specimen from Thrissur in Kerala State as well as on the molecular basis. Analysis based on the advertisement call of Duttaphrynus scaber, albeit preliminary, is provided for the first time for this species.

Two species of giant water bugs Lethocerus were found in the Gangetic plains of northern India and Nepal. Lethocerus indicus is widespread, whereas a single record of Lethocerus patruelis confirms the eastern distribution range in Bihar. Four instars of aquatic nymphs occur exclusively in temporary shallow stagnant water bodies which harbor rich amphibian populations but lack permanent fish fauna. From mid-August to the first week of November adults fly. Later they live submerged in aquatic habitats of large rivers and permanent stagnant water bodies which harbor diverse fish fauna. Repeated findings of adults with ventrally attached egg-shaped pupae of aquatic mites (Hydracarina) suggest that these are host-specific ones of Lethocerus. Thus, the occurrence of protelean parasites on giant water bugs in the Gangetic plains is a previously unknown unique finding since apparently mites have been noticed only from other Nepomorpha families.

Channa gachua (Ophiocephalidae) commonly known as snake-head fish. The mucosa of the gut i.e. stomach, intestine and rectum is lined with a film containing phospholipids and protein. Running over the mucosa/ layer is a thin film which stains out clearly in oil red O and Sudan black B staining. The thin film was stained PAS and slightly with alcian blue (pH 0.5-3.00). A positive reaction was obtained in the lining film when stained for basic proteins and - SH radicals. In the present investigation a lining film has been detected in the stomach, intestine and rectum of Channa gachua, which does not differ from the properties shown in the lining film of other vertebrates. The lining film showing a weak reaction with PAS and AB, deserves special mention. It has been claim that proteins which contains serine or threonine at the end of protein at any position in the chain may react with PAS if periodic acid oxidation prolonged. The chemical nature of the lining film occurring in the stomach, intestine and rectum of Channa gachua is basically glycoprotein and lipid mostly composed of phospholipids.

Oariation in dermatoglyphics in a population can be a tool to analyze genetic makeup and any deviation is a strong indicative of inherited abnormality or altered genotype. Dermatoglyphic data were obtained from 18 confirmed patients of Down's Syndrome. The data was correlated and compared with 23 normal persons. In Down's Syndrome cases the standard deviation of ATD angle was much higher than the standard deviation in normal persons. Total finger ridge counts and ATD angle differed significantly: from normal persons. Abnormal dermatoglyphic features such as Semian Crease, Sydney Line, Ulnar Loops, very short fingers and finger nails have occurred in most of the patients.

The present specimen differs from all the known species of Pseudoacanthocephalus in having lesser number of cement glands, arrangement and number of proboscis hooks, size of the proboscis hook and size of the eggs. The present specimen shows closest resemblance to Pseudoacanthocephalus reesei Bush et al., 2009 reported from Rana boulengeri Gunther, 1889 but differs in having different number of cement glands, mode of arrangement of proboscis hooks, shorter length of proboscis receptacle and smaller egg size.

The structure and functions of the olfactory organs in Mastacembelus armatus (Lacepede) has been described morphologically and methodically with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The olfactory rosette is elongated, long cone shaped structure and the lamellae arranged on both sides of the median raphe. A single lamella is leaf like and is slightly curved at its proximal end. This fish species is very interesting because both olfactory lobes and olfactory bulbs are present in this fish, which are not present in other common fish species. Olfactory bulbs are elongated in shape, present at the base of olfactory rosette. A single nasal sac is present at the base of the each olfactory rosette. The epithelial lamellar surface area shows a dense network of microtubule like structure. Some ciliated cells and non-ciliated cells are seen between this network. The inner view of raphe appears as a spirally arranged tissue of the different types of cells present.

The morphological structure and the morphometric measurement of the olfactory rosette in a freshwater air-breathing fish, Clarias batrachus (Linn.) have been described. The paired olfactory rosettes are elongated in shape and each rosette bears a series of olfactory lamellae On each side of the median raphe. Measurement of the dimension of olfactory lamellae have been made in Clarias batrachus weighing 20.60 g to 155.50g and the data were analysed with respect to body weight using logarithmic transformations, Y=aW^b. The total number of lamellae in the olfactory rosette increased with increased in body weight. With unit increase in body weight the total number of lamellae increased by a power (b) of 0.1493. Similarly the total surface area of lamellae increased by power (b) of 0.4844 for the fishes of similar body weight. However, the weight specific total surface area of lamellae showed a decreasing trend with slope value -0.7774. All the parameters showed highly significant correlation.

Author had studied the sex ratio, length-weight relationship, growth pattern and mortality of a Hill Stream Loach, Acanthocobitis mooreh (Sykes, 1839), from its type locality in northern Western Ghats of India. The sex ratio of A. mooreh was unbiased and did not deviate from the expected 1:1 ratio. The power of the length-weight relationship of A. mooreh for both males and females and for the combined population was significantly lesser than the cubic value expected by isometry. Von Bertalanffy Growth Function fitted to the length frequency data suggested that the asymptotic length of the fish is 6.04cm while the growth constant is 0.79y^-1. Total mortality of the fish is 2.05y^-1 and the young are more prone to mortality. Both, the high growth rate and high mortality at younger ages indicates that the fish is 'r' selected.

The consensus sequences along with the significant alignment of the bacteria were revealed in turn helping in the formulation of their unrooted phylogenetic tree.

The parasitic wasps reared and collected belong to six families-Encyrtidae, Eulophidae, Chalcididae, Eucharitidae, Aphelinidae, and Pteromalidae, including 16 species under 12 genera. The majority of the species are primary or secondary parasitoids attacking many insect groups. The scale insects and mealybugs documented belong to four families-Coccidae, Pseudococcidae, Diaspididae, and Cerococcidae, including 12 species under 11 genera. Information on the species distribution, host association, and brief taxonomical description of each species along with illustrations is provided for easy identification. Mango, Mangifera indica L., a member of family Anacardiaceae, is an important commercial fruit of the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The crop suffers regularly to a colossal loss due to ravages of pests, which is considered to be a serious threat to Mango industry. The most destructive insects are the mango hoppers which cause greatest damages to the mango inflorescences in India and Bangladesh. The present investigation was undertaken with a new insect growth regulator (1GR) Buprofezin 25 SC (Buprostar), a candidate product from Meghmani Organics Limited (MOL), Ahmedabad, India for control on mango hoppers (Amritodous atkinsoni Leth. and Idioscopus riveosparsus Leth.), the predominant species in mango orchards of West Bengal, India. Imidachloprid 17.8 SL (0.0053%) and Profenophos 50% EC (0.075%) were used as check. During the month of February hopper population on attaining 5 adults /10 nymphs per panicle were given 2 sprays at a fortnightly interval. Observation on mango hopper, natural enemies and phytotoxicity were recorded one day before spray and 1, 7 and 14 days after the spray under the present investigation. Imidacloprid 17.8% SL treatment resulted in the best suppression of hopper population (91.89% suppression) over untreated control, closely followed by Profenophos 50% EC (88.51% suppression) and Buprofezin 25% SC (Buprostar) (85.22% suppression). Buprostar increased in the natural enemies' population in ranging from 3.85 to 7.83 and is similar to untreated control (4.26 to 7.06), indicating Buprofezin 25SC safe to natural enemies. Whereas, Imidachloprid 17.8 SL and Profenophos 50% EC are moderate to highly toxic to natural enemies of mango. Buprostar (Buprofezin) 25 SC at 0.05% gave more that 85% control of mango hopper and is safer to natural enemies of mango and has no adverse effect on mango leaves, flowers and fruits. Considering the moderate to higher efficacy as well as its low toxicity to natural enemies and minimum impact on human health, coupled with higher yield potentially insect growth regulators (IGR) can be incorporated in future 1PM programme and organic farming in fruit cultivation.

A new species of the genus Globocephaloides Yorke et Maplestone, 1926, is reported from the intestine of the reptilian host, Mabuya multifasciata from Manipur. The present specimen is morphologically similar to Globocephaloides wallabiae Jonston et Mawson, 1939, in having two lateral, jaw-like structures, 4 tiny conical cephalic papillae, in structure of the oesophagus, position of the nerve ring and similar female reproductive system and ellipsoidal eggs. However, the present specimen differs from G. wallabiae in being an uncoiled nematode, in having body alae, rounded mouth opening, V-shaped buttress-like elevations of cuticle and in lacking dorsal tooth & 2 tiny subventral teeth and finger-like extensions of neural pulp which are present in G. wallabiae.

Studies on toxic effect of Cumate (a carbamate pesticide) on haematological make up in facultative air breathing teleost Channa punctatus (Bloch) have been made. The LC ₅₀ values of cumate were calculated to be 1.12, 1.10, 0.99, 0.93 and 0.91 mg/l respectively for 24h, 48h, 72h, 96h and 120h exposure at 29.0±1.0°c. The RBC counts, Hb content PCV (or haematocrit values), M.C.H.C. and oxygen capacity of control group of fishes (45.0±1.5g) were 2.86±0.11 million per cubic mm of blood, 15.2±0.18g%, 23.8±1.18% 63.8% and 19.0 vol% respectively. Cumate intoxication (at sub lethal concentration of 0.80 mg/l) in this fish caused significant decrease in RBC counts, Hb content, PCV, and oxygen capacity as compared to control. The reason for such changes has been discussed in this paper.

In Maharashtra, Holotrichia Hope is one of the most economically important genus of Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae, attacking Soybean, Sugarcane, Sorghum, Groundnut and many other field crops. The specimens were collected from five different agro-climatic zones of Maharashtra viz, South Konkan, Western ghat hills, Northern hills, Western Vidarbha plains and Eastern Vidarbha hills during 2012-2013. Male genitalia characterization has got prime importance as a species diagnostics tool. Thus, the investigations were carried out and described accordingly on external morphological characters and male genitalia. Studies revealed the presence of five species viz. Holotrichia serrata (Fabricius), Holotrichia fissa Brenske, Holotrichia akolana Khan and Ghai, Holotrichia reynaudi (Blanchard) and Holotrichia nagpurensis Khan and Ghai. Morphologically they were slightly varied. However, in male genitalia, significant variations were noticed in parameres, phallobase, endophallus and spiculum gastrale. Holotrichia serrata (Fabricius), was found to be the most prevalent species in every agro-climatic zones of Maharashtra.

With well over 500 species, Bactrocera is one of the most species-rich clades within the dipteran family Tephritidae, the true fruit flies. In quarantine and plant protection activities, their immature stages are metwith and diagnosis of these is important. For this purpose molecular diagnosis becomes handy, because it is independent of sex, color morphs and life stages. Alignment of the sequences of 28S rDNA from various life stages of the four species of Bactrocera shows that the molecular identification is independent of life stages and polymorphism of the target species. This study evaluated the utility of 28S rDNA for the quick and accurate species diagnosis of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of all the Bactrocera spp. studied. The phylogram for the Bactrocera spp. suggests that B. tau is phylogenetically distant from the rest of the three species viz. B. dorsalis, B. zonata and B. correcta, which was supported by 100% bootstrap value. Moreover B. dorsalis, B. zonata and B. correcta had maximum sequence identity (98%) with very few variable sites in the 28S rDNA sequences. Even though, 28S rDNA region will have high reliability for species identification in these species studied and it was never reported before. This study indubitably proved the utility of 28S rDNA for the quick and accurate species diagnosis of egg, larva, pupa and adult of B. zonata Saunders, B. tau Walker and B. dorsalis Hendel.

The Nilgiri Mystus, Hemibagrus punctatus, a rare bagrid catfish endemic to the Western Ghats, has been currently listed in the IUCN Red List, as 'Critically Endangered' with a possibility that it could be extinct. The last validated record of H. punctatus was known to be in 1998, and several surveys since then have not been able to collect the species from its native range. In this paper, we provide information on new records of this rare catfish from the Western Ghats after a period of 14 years, and discuss its distribution, ecology and conservation. An updated conservation assessment of this species following the IUCN Red List Criteria is also provided.

The genus Kleidotoma is reported for the first time from India with Kleidotoma sikkimensis sp. nov. Akhtar. The new species is described from Sikkim, India and distinguished from K. kraussi Yoshimoto through malar space about 0.32x height of eye, scape 1.66x as long as broad, pronotum behind plate on each side with about 2 costate extending somewhat diagonal to margin of mesoscutum, radial cell moderate in size, apical portion of radial vein not extending beyond radial cell along the wing margin, scutellar cup not extending to the apex of the disc. A list of Kleidotoma is given which includes 119 species, of this 74 species from Palearctic, 16 species from Afrotropical, 4 species from Neotropic, 2 species from Oriental, 1 species each from Antarctic and Australasian, 18 species from Nearctic + Neotropic, 1 species each from Palearctic + Australasian and Palearctic + Neotropic and 1 species from Neotropic + Australasian + Nearctic region along with synonyms and distributions.

The family Acrididae has the largest species representation (14 species) followed by Catantopidae (10 species) while Pyrgomorphidae is represented by five species only. Maximum Diversity has been recorded in the month of August, September and October whereas distribution of five species recorded throughout the year.

The pineal hormone melatonin controls reproduction of photoperiodic mammals and is an integral part of the circadian rhythm in birds. This hormone is involved in physiological processes including growth, development, and aging. Melatonin is rhythmically synthesised and released by the avain pineal gland and it imposes periodicity in different aspects of bird life. The acclimatized quails (12 males, 8 females) were housed in groups of four in wire net cages. 0.1 ml pineal extract was administered intramuscularly. The birds were kept under two photoperiodic regimes group II (23L: 1D) and group III (23 D: 1L) in male grey quails and under natural conditions (NDL) in female grey quails. Data was analysed using students 't' test. Slightly (P <62> 0.025) rise in body weight of males was found in group II and fall in group III were observed compared with pretreatment. Highly significant (P <62> 0.005) increase in group II and decrease in group III was observed in volume of testis post treatment. The conclusion can be drawn that pineal extract inhibited the size of testis. In female pineal extract treated group showed marginal (P <62> 0.025) decrease and increase in body weight after treatment. Marginal (P <62> 0.025) rise was recorded in diameter of largest follicle of ovary in control group whereas pineal extract experiencing group exhibited decrease which was of no significance.

This study was conducted in the Ritchie's archipelago of Andaman and Nicobar Islands during April 2008 through December 2011 to assess the diversity and species abundance distribution of avifauna. Species like Common Hill Myna (Gracula religiosa), White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), Andaman Wood-Pigeon (Columba palumbodes), Andaman Green Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula aenea andamanica), Red-brested Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri), Red-cheeked Parakeet (Psittacula longicauda), Black-capped Kingfisher (Halcyon pileata), White-headed Starling (Sturnus erythropygius), Andaman Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis andamansis) and Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus) were most common in this area. Species richness of birds varied in different islands. Highest number of species richness and abundance was recorded at Havelock Islands followed by Neil Island. Highest diversity index (H') was recorded at Havelock Island (3.95). The White-headed Starling (863.25/km²) and Green Imperial Pigeon (673.13/km²) was highest in density. The result shows that Ritchie's archipelago support unique avian assemblages, comprising of many rare and endemic species in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Chevaadu breed of sheep is a meat breed able to withstand extremely hot and humid climatic conditions. Their home tract is restricted to a few taluks in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The distinguishing morphological features of the breed are brown coat color and attractive horn pattern in rams. The attractive brown coat color gives a better value to the Chevaadu which is preferred by the Hindus for their religious purpose. This fetches more price and profit to the flock owners.

The behavioral changes observed due to induced conditions of hypoxia in experimental Grey Quails (Coturnix coturnix) included swelling, slower breathing, and later signs of unconsciousness. The changes observed due to induced conditions of hypoxia in serum protein after electrophoresis showed the absence of certain proteins, whose synthesis were checked when conditions were not favorable. There were indications of proteins whose synthesis were initiated in unfavorable conditions and proteins whose synthesis were enhanced under conditions of stress. Such kind of study has not been documented in aves very strongly and so this work has its importance in this aspect.

In a study on the butterfly community of the Oussudu (Ousteri) Bird Sanctuary and its environs at Puducherry, a total of 63 butterfly species belonging to 47 genera under five families were recorded which included two endemics and three Schedule I species. Nymphalidae was the most diverse and abundant butterfly family of the area followed by Pieridae. The paper also discusses the abundance and species assemblage pattern in the local butterfly fauna along with their legal/protection status and distribution patterns in the study area.

New species of scleractinian coral Ctenactis triangularis sp. nov. in the family Fungiidae has been described from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This species has a triangular arm shaped corallum with the mouth extending along all three arms. Septal dentition is long, cylindrical, equally sized and closely arranged. Numerous pits on the costae and costal spines are spinulose. Ctenactis triangularis sp. nov. has an affinity with Ctenactis echinata (Pallas, 1766), Ctenactis crassa (Dana, 1846) and Ctenactis albitentaculata (Hoeksema, 1989), thus the morphological features have been compared with these three species and discussed.

Study was conducted to see the effect of seasons on prevalence of fresh water snails at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. The species recorded during present studies were l. exustus, L.luteola, V. bengalensis, G. convexisculus from all water sources. The highest snail population was observed in the ponds (2610.50 /m²) followed by marshy lands, ditches, paddy fields, with least in the water pools (288.5/m²) and the difference was statistically significant. A sharp increase in snail population was observed with start of rainy season (June), reached to its peak in October thereafter, a sharp decrease was recorded in November and December. Change of season altered species proportion among gastropods. The population of both the species was maximum in rainy season.

Studies were done on the association of fig fruit wasp and nematodes from Ficus racemosa in and around the areas of Hyderabad, A.P. The nematode new species studied, belonging to the family Cylindrocorpidae differ in their morphological features and bionomics were reported as new species Paracylindrocorpus racemosa for which reason these two nematodes have been created as Parasitocylindrocorpus narayani n.sp. and Parasitocylindrocorpus parammi n.sp. These nematodes were collected from ripe fruits and new inflorescence of the fig tree from the migratory wasp.

The two aforesaid lice caused 3.4% and 13.3% (non significant) reduction in the egg production, respectively. The weight loss caused to infested hens was 6.0% and 5.4%, respectively.
