In this study contact toxicity of the essential oils from cedarwood (Cedrus deodara), camphor (Cinnamomum camphora), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globules), lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), peppermint (Mentha piperita), and bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) were tested against the Corcyra cephalonica. Their biological activity on reproductive inhibition was also determined. Residual film bioassays were employed in petri dish. The results indicated that the mortality of 4th instar larvae increased with increased concentration and time. Cedarwood oil showed highest insecticidal activity i.e. 100% mortality at 2% concentration followed by eucalyptus, camphor, peppermint, lemongrass, and bitter orange. Cedarwood oil also showed reproductive inhibition while other tested essential oils had negligible effect on reproduction. The LC₅₀ of cedarwood, eucalyptus, camphor, peppermint, lemongrass, and bitter orange oils were 1.37%, 1.43%, 1.56%, 1.83%, 1.92% and 2.03% respectively. Therefore, these essential oils were suggested to be used for the management of Corcyra cephalonica.

Aqueous neem leaf extract was tested against root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. In vitro studies, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% concentrations of extract significantly suppressed root-knot egg hatching and caused second stage juvenile mortality. Eggs after treatment with 100% concentration when transferred to distilled water showed maximum inhibition of hatching (0.18 ±0.60) as compared to control (6.63 ±1.20) after 6 hrs exposure time. Percentage of viable J2 decreased with increase in exposure time from 12hrs to 72hrs in each concentration. In the juvenile mortality test, exposure of J2 to 100% for 24hrs led to 97.5% mortality in comparison to 15.8% in controls. After treatment with 75% at 12hrs and 24hrs, 50% at 12hrs and 24hrs, 2 5% at 72hrs less than 50% immobile J2 were revived when immersed in distilled water in comparison to 100% revivability in controls. No significant revival (1.2%) of J2 was observed after 12hr at 50% concentration as compared to control 79.3% in distilled water. In pot experiment, the control-2 plants (infected= plant+ nematode) exhibited significant reduction in fresh root weight (2.37g) and shoot weight (11.54g) as compared to 5.14g and 22.65g respectively in control-1(plant) group. There was significant reduction in the total weight of fruit yield in control2 (2.9g) and pretreated J2 group (2.61g) as compared to the control-1(plant) (12.91g), preventive group (plant + neem + nematode) (10.3g) and therapeutic group (plant + nematode + neem) (7.03g). Comparison of preventive group with pretreated J2 group indicated that total fresh root weight (3.83g; 3.68g) and shoot weight (16.62g; 10.32g) mean values were more when aqueous neem leaf extract was applied as soil drench. Similarly total length of root (12.61cm; 7.05cm) and shoot system (31.31cm; 30.83cm) and fruit yield (10.3g;2.61g) was found to be better in the preventive group as compared to the pretreated J2 group. Furthermore the pretreated J2 plant group showed significant reduction in root gall index 2.9 as compared to infected group 3.1 (Control-2). In preventive group root gall index was found to be 1.2 as compared to therapeutic (2.4) and pretreated J2 (2.9) groups.

The correlation results in macroinvertebrates revealed 53.7% positive combinations and 46.3% negative in which eight unions were high related [r<62>0.60]. Water parameter correlation revealed 50.8% positive and 49.2% negative unions in which pH-PO4, EC-SO4, TH-DO and TH-BOD were highly related. The relation between water parameters v/s macroinvertebrates species was noticed 58.8% positive and 41.2% negative unions in which eight were high [r=<62>0.6] and five were highly [r=<62>0.7] relayed. The relations were beloved to provoke the tolerance and adaptation responses observed herein.

The reservoir ecosystems of Sri Lanka are ancient man-made riparian habitats. Adequate food supply and suitable climatic and soil parameters make these habitats ideal for tiger beetles. Twenty-six reservoirs were investigated for the presence of tiger beetles, and four species were recorded: Calomera angulata (Fabricius, 1798), Myriochila (Monelica) fastidiosa (Dejean, 1825), Cylindera (Oligoma) lacunosa (Putzeys, 1875) and Lophyra (Lophyra) catena (Fabricius, 1775). Calomera angulata is the most common species, occurring in the majority of reservoir habitats. Key environmental factors of climate and soil were examined and linked to habitat preferences of tiger beetle species.

Paper details the physico-chemical parameters of water and bottom sediments during intensive culture of Indian Major Carps in outdoor farmers' ponds using diets incorporated with locally available ingredients in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India. The average water and soil pH ranged between 6.09-6.89 and between 4.42-4.71, respectively. The average dissolved oxygen in pond water was quite high (between 11.42-13.50 mg/l). Average electrical conductivity of the pond water and soil ranged between 0.35 -0.58 mmhos/cm and between 0.22 -0.42 mmhos/cm, respectively. The average free carbon dioxide ranged between 4.68 -6.13 mg/l, while the average total alkalinity ranged between 116.03 -119.67 mg/l in the pond water. Average Ammonium-N in the pond water ranged between 0.22 -0.77 mg/l. The average organic carbon in the bottom soil ranged from 0.98 to 1.38%, while the average total nitrogen ranged from 0.15 to 0.26%. All the ponds appeared quite suitable for aquaculture; however, the average values of water and soil pH appeared extremely acidic. Future research on temporal and spatial variations in water and bottom soil quality and its effect in augmenting production should be carried out.

objective of this study was to preserve by a modified adapted protocol of the standard S10 plastination method fresh samples of three species of fish (Tilapia, African catfish and African Bonytongue) for use as teaching aids. Distances between selected anatomical structures were measured on the surface of the fresh specimens and during various stages of plastination to determine changes in shapes and sizes of the samples. The plastinated specimens are markedly darker than the fresh specimens. Plastination caused shrinkage in all the samples but this was not significant (p≤0.05).The plastinated specimens retained their general shapes and sizes and their anatomical structures were preserved. The plastinated specimens are therefore useful models of the fishes and can be used as teaching aids.

Study was carried out to evaluate the protective effects of Actinidia chinesis (Kiwi) extract against Aflatoxin B1-induced genotoxicity. Significant reduction of number of aberrant cells and frequency of aberration per cell in the bone marrow (bw) of albino mice in vivo, and the reduction of chromosomal aberrations (CAs), sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs), and enhanced replication indices in human lymphocyte cultures were observed. We also notice the positive dose-response relationship between the doses of Kiwi Extract and antigenotoxicity, using four optimum doses (150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 mg/kg bw.) of Kiwi Extract in vivo and four concentrations viz; 25, 50, 60, 80 and 90 μg/ml in in vitro study. The data were collected at three durations (16, 24, & 32 hrs in vivo and 24, 48, & 72 hrs in vitro); although the effect was not time dependent but it was dose dependent.

The cytotoxic effect of the heavy metal chromium on oxygen consumption and histology of the gills of Lamellidens marginalis was studied. L. marginalis were exposed for 7, 14 and 21 days in 10% sub lethal concentration of 96 h LC₅₀ of chromium (4.5 mg/l). An acceleration (+36%) in respiratory rate was observed in the mussel exposed to sublethal concentration (SLC) of 10% on 7th day of exposure. However, a decline (-44.5 & -70.8%) in the rate of respiration was recorded when they were exposed for a prolonged period of 14 and 21 days. The gills exposed to SLC of chromium showed mild morphological alterations during 7 days of exposure. However, after 21 days, fusion of adjacent lamellae, vacuolization, clumping of lamellae and hyperplasia were prominent. All these alterations finally caused the failure of respiratory mechanism, which resulted in the death of the test mussel.

These include three of the only six species reported from subterranean freshwaters of peninsular India and two undescribed species. Leptocentrus bajulans is a polyphagous membracid species show morphometric variations on eight different host plants i.e Cassia glauca (Lam); Cestrum diurnum (Linn.); Lawsonia alba (Lamk.); Tamarandus indica (Linn); Emblica officinalis (Gaertn.); Dalbergia sissoo (Roxb.); Cassia fistula (Linn), Albizzia lebbeck (Benth.); has been observed and incorporated in this paper. These observations were also compared with environmental factors. Observations revealed that female insects in general larger than male inespective of host plant on which it is feeding. As far as the host value is concerned Cassia fistula is the best host as nearly all the morphometric characteristics show an upward value in the insects feeding on it. Another conclusion is that different host plants result in differential development of various parameter in the individuals of the same species.

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental and industrial pollutant that adversely affects human and animal health. This study was carried out to investigate the toxic effects of Cd on liver and testis of albino mice. Cadmium administration led to significant (P<60>.001) reduction in weight of liver and testes. Histopathologicai analysis in liver revealed oedema, vacuolation, lymphocytic infilteration and hyperaemia, numerous pyknotic, degenerative and binucleated nuclei, giant cell and kupffer cells at the sites of damage were also visible. Alterations in testis were in the form of degenerated germinal layer, almost complete loss of spermatogenic activity and leydig cell lysis. In the present study testis were found to be more sensitive to Cd than liver.

Changes in lipase activity during development of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) have been studied. Lipase mainly hydrolyses the triglycerides and releases fatty acids. The maximum activity of the enzyme was recorded at optimal pM 7 andtemperature 37 °C, 30 min. incubation time, 1% enzyme concentration and 5% substrate concentration. During embryogenesis maximum enzyme activity was observed in 5 day eggs. During larval growth gradual increase in enzyme activity from 1 to 11 day, sharp fall from 11 to 12 day, slow decrease from 12 to 20 day larvae was observed. During metamorphosis maximum enzyme activity was observed in 7 day pupae and decrease from 7-10 day pupae. During adult development maximum enzyme activity was observed in 2- day male and female adults. The physiological role of lipase during development of C. partellus is discussed.

Coconut moth, Batrachedra arenosella Walker (Lepidoptera : Batrachedridae) infestation was proved to be one of the major factors responsible for immature nut fall in coconut ecosystem in South India. The larvae feed on the mesocarp of immature nuts under the perianth forming a silken web with excretory pellets. Its infestation predisposes the nuts to secondary infection by other pests and micro organisms. Feeding by B. arenosella larvae near the stalk of the nut leads to premature nut fall. Therefore investigations on the seasonal incidence of were undertaken at V.C. Farm, Mandya during 2011-12. Its incidence was more abundant on coconut during August. Adults were active throughout the year as evidenced by moth catches in all the months. The trap catches of B. arenosella exhibited a negative association with weather parameters viz., maximum temperature, sunshine hours, rainfall and positive relation with minimum temperature, morning relative humidity and afternoon relative humidity. The trap catches were found to be significantly positively correlated with wind speed. Nut damage by the larvae exhibited a negative association with maximum temperature, sunshine hours and rainfall. The incidence of the larvae was observed in the intact nuts throughout the year. An average of 11.82% incidence was observed on intact nuts which accounts for 22.39% of fallen nuts. A positive association was observed between adult trap catches and field incidence of B. arenosella on the immature nuts.

Lipolytic activity in larval haemolymph of gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) revealed optimum pH 7.8, incubation time 20 minutes, temperature 37° C, enzyme concentration 1% and substrate concentration 6% and Michaelis-Menten constant 0.12 x 10^-2 mM. The gradual increase in larva] haemolymph lipase activity was observed from 7-day larvae to 10-day larvae and decrease from 10-day larvae to 15-day larvae. The maximum lipase activity was observed in 10-day larvae. The physiological role of larval haemolymph lipase (EC 3.1.1.3) of H. armigera has been reported in present paper.

The field study was conducted for two consecutive seasons during 2003 & 2004 at Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal. The incidence pattern of three insect pests viz. Cryptopeltis tennis L. (Miridae :Hemiptera), Dolycoris indicus Stant.(Pentatomidae : Hemiptera) and Pachnephorus bistreatus Muls. (Chrysomelidae : Coleoptera) on sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) at different dates of sowing revealed that the three pests appeared on the crop in between last week of March to early week of April in both the seasons. The duration of occurrence of C. tennis was 7 to 10 weeks and 6 to 9 weeks for D. indicus and P. bistreatus, respectively on three successive dates of sowing. The peak incidence of three insect pests were recorded in the fourth week of April and fourth week of May for C tennis and D. indies was third week of April and first week of May where as P. histrealus was second and first week of April during 2003 and 2004, respectively.

This study examined the nest architecture and nesting biology of the social wasp Vespa tropica (Hymenoptera : Vespidae) in GKVK campus, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. Information on the biology and nesting habits of most of the Indian wasp's species is almost lacking. These wasps built 56 cm height nest, which is attached to the substratum by a single petiole. The immature nests were observed from June to August, 2012. Nest was completely covered with 4-7 layers of wooden fragment mixed with saliva/carton with a five combs in it. A total of 2521 cells were present with 8.34±0.17mm of cell size. The colonies had 340 females and one queen with no drones in the nest.

A case control study was conducted to assess the effects of long-term dose of epichlorohydrin on fertility, body and reproductive organ weight and level of sex hormones in Wister albino male rats. Ten adult male rats were exposed to epichlorohydrin at a concentration of 100 mg/kg/b.wt for 90 days. Another ten control male rats received vehicle (distilled water). After 24 hours of the last dose, animals were autopsied under light anesthesia. Several parameters including, body and reproductive organ weight, sperm count and motility, serum testosterone, FSH, levels of cholesterol, triglyceride, SGOT and SGPT were all measured. Assessment of pregnancies in females mixed with tested males was also measured. The results of histological, histometrical and biochemical profiles were compared to that of the control group, and the significance of these results was measured using student "t" and Chi- square tests. Long-term dose of epichlorohydrin for 90 days caused a significant decrease in spermatogenesis in seminiferous tubules of the testes. Sperm motility and density were also significantly reduced in Cauda epididymides and testes of the treated group. The body weights and weight of reproductive organs (testes, epididymides, ventral prostrate and seminal vesicle) were decreased considerably. Hormonal assay also showed significant decrease in testosterone levels. Testicular cell population dynamics also demonstrated a decrease in the number of both primary and secondary spermatocytes and spermatids in the treatment group. The number of female rats impregnated by male rats on long - term epichlorohydrin dose had decreased. The number of implantations and the number of viable fetuses were also notably decreased in female rats impregnated by male rats exposed epichlorohydrin. Histometry of reproductive organs confirmed these results. These results confirm that the long - term dose of epichlorohydrin produces adverse effects on fertility and reproductive system in adult male rat.

Studied the survivorship (average lifespan, life expectancy at birth and generation time) and reproduction (gross and net reproductive rates, and the rate of population increase) of Moina macrocopa, a common cladoceran found in many freshwater bodies of Mexico. We used 3-conditioned-media obtained from (a) fish (Poeciliopsis occidentalis), (b) axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) and (c) frog tadpole (Hyla eximia). Standard life table demography experiments were done at laboratory temperature (22°C) on neonates from a single parthenogenetic female of M. macrocopa and fed Chlorella at l.0x10⁶ cells ml^-1. Compared with survivorship variables, the age-specific reproduction of M. macrocopa was more dramatically influenced by the predator conditioned-medium. Compared with controls, there was a significant increase in the offspring production in all three treatments involving the vertebrate conditioned medium; the highest was observed in the tadpole conditioned medium while the lowest was with Ambystoma-conditioned medium. Average lifespan (ALS), gross (GRR) and net reproductive rates (NRR), generation time (GT) and the rate of population increase (r) were all significantly affected depending on the vertebrate-conditioned medium. For example, ALS was adversely affected due to Ambystoma while, it was stimulated due to fish-conditioned medium. Gross and net reproductive rates were lowest in control than in conditioned media from fish, frog tadpoles and axolotl. Generation time was lowest (6 days) in controls and in axolotl-conditioned medium but longer (9 days) in treatments containing fish or frog tadpole-conditioned medium. The three conditioned-media from the predators induced the differential changes in life traits of M. macrocopa. The effects of kairomones in Amystoma-conditioned medium, however, than other two on the measured demographic variables of M. macrocopa.

Stomach contents of nine species of commercially important demersal finfishes off Veraval coast were examined. Fish samples were collected periodically from the commercial trawlers of Veraval from January 2009 to October 2010. The dietary components of each species was studied and expressed as percentage of numerical composition (C_N), percentage of gravimetric composition (C_W) and percentage of frequency of occurrence (F). The major food items in the stomachs of each species were determined using an Index of Relative Importance (IRI). The gut contents of the fish varied in number, weight, and their frequency of occurrence with species to species. The study showed that prey items that were smaller in size constituted the major bulk, while the large size prey items were in fewer numbers. Based on cluster analysis (Bray-Curtis similarity) of predator (fish) feeding similarities, six sub-groups and the following three major groups were identified: group I (detritus feeders) comprised Pampus argenteus and Arius thalassinus; group II, (pisces feeders), was the largest group identified and included Saurida tumbil, Saurida undosquamis, Otolithes cuvieri and Johnius glaucus; group III,(shrimp feeders), consisted of Priacanthus hamrur, Nemipterus japonicus and Nemipterus mesoprion. Acetes spp., prawns and juvenile finfishes were the most important food items consumed by majority of the species. The values of the feeding index did not show any significant variation in different months during the two years of observation. However, the feeding intensity was slightly higher during the period of September to December. The results of the present investigation could provide valuable information in formulating strategies for management of fishery resources in the region.

Aim of the present study was to standardize and evaluate dot enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Dot - ELISA) as simple and rapid test for detection of cysticercus antibody in the serum for the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis.. Twenty five test sera were collected from the patients of NCC of the CSMMU Hospital, Lucknow and twenty five control sera from healthy donors of the Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow, during a study period of six months. Dot - ELISA detected antibodies in 21 of 25 in cases of NCC, 25 out of 25 in CT/ MRI proven cases and 23 of 25 each in non-cysticercal CNS infection controls and healthy controls. The test showed sensitivity of 84%, specificity of 92%, positive predictive value of 91%, and negative predictive value of 85%. Results of the present study show that Dot - ELISA as a simple test can be used in the field or poorly equipped laboratories for diagnosis of NCC.

Oysters, Crassostrea cattuckensis were exposed to sub-lethal levels of zinc for 15 days and 30 days for metal accumulation and 15 days metal depuration. The metal exposed to oysters was (0.65) and (0.94ppm). There was increased metal content significantly (P < 0.001) in all body parts (æg/g). The accumulation rate upon 15 days exposure in lower and higher concentrations was from siphon (228.31), (230.69), gills (207.28), (198.84), hepatopancreas (178.84), (191.54), gonads (175.44), (156.18), mantle (164.67), (192.95) and adductor muscle (161.16), (172.89) respectively. Whereas upon 30 days exposure the accumulation rate in (0.65 ppm) was from siphon (269.67), gill (251.48), mantle (246.62), hepatopancreas (231.83), adductor muscle (180.99) and gonad (93.28). While in (0.94 ppm) it was from siphon (272.78), gills (259.32), mantle (226.67), gonad (196.64) adductor muscle (195.71) and hepatopancreas (170.91). The depuration of metal in normal seawater over a period of 15 days was significant. The metal depuration rate in (0.65 ppm) was from siphon (159.75), gill (146.99), mantle (125.24), hepatopancreas (115.55), gonad (104.44) and adductor muscle (99.28). However, in (0.94 ppm) the depuration rate was more in siphon (172.27), adductor muscle (167.62), gills (158.61), hepatopancreas (124.22), gonad (109.83) and mantle (87.61).

Role of Neem (Azadirachta indica) as an antidote against acanthocephala was studied in a popular fish of Bihar - Channa punctatus. Among five species of helminths obtained, Pallisentis pandei was the only acanthocephala. Its incidence was found 62.8% in the normal group. Experimental groups of fishes were then administered Neem in concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75% with other ingredients. After two and four weeks of treatment with Neem, incidences of Pallisentis pandei dropped very significantly (p <60> 0.05), the reduction being higher for higher concentration of Neem. Thus Neem was found to be an effective antidote against acanthocephala - Pallisentis pandei.

Taxa observed in the water body were classified under four categories: (1) Consistent-present for 9-12 months (Aeruginosa, Diatoms, Microcystis and Synachocystis sp.) (2) Subconsistent-present for 6-8 months (Microcystis robusta and Synachococcus sp.) (3) Inconsistent-present for 2-5 months (Anabaena sp., Anabaena circularis, Chlorococcum sp., Chlorella sp., Cosmarium botrytis, Eucapsis minuta, Raphidiopsis sp. and Scenedesmuus bijugatus) and (4) Sporadic-present for one month only. Among algae 6 taxa were pollution tolerant, 5 moderate to pollution and remaining clear water forms. Zoobenthos showed distinct quantitative variations. Number of Zoobenthos increased in the summer months while decreased in the winter months. Different groups of zoobenthos exhibited their distinct peaks in different months of the year.
