Results of a study conducted to know the academic status of librarians as perceived by the psychologists. It is found that the senior faculty members viz. professors and readers are highly personally associated with the librarians. Fifty percent of the psychologists consider the librarians as faculty members. Results show that 61. 76% psychologists think that librarians participate and contribute in academic activities. Almost equal number of psychologists thinks that librarians participate and contribute in social activities. The 96.07% psychologists consider librarians as useful and 94. J 2% conside the librarians as helpful.

Many aspects of digital libraries have been considered and examined so far by many researchers and authors. How much these efforts have been collaborative within the last few years by those who have been actively involved in recording of studies done on theoretical and practical aspects of digital libraries, was the main point of concern. To achieve this end, the EBSCOs Academic Search Full TEXT Premier database and Science Direct online database were consulted for online electronic articles on digital libraries. The publication period was limited to 5 years, i.e., from January 2000 to January 2005. Some 130 articles in EBSCO database, and 115 articles were returned in Science Direct database. In the course of examination, Collaboration Coefficient equation was used as was introduced by Ajiferuke, et al. Calculation of the CC values revealed that collaboration in publication of digital library records has been a growing trend in the last five years, though not very much remarkably. 109 subjects were identified in the articles that were discussed in relation to digital libraries. Among these, the highest collaboration rates were identified to be associated with issues such as technicalities, application, experiments, performance, and, information processing and retrieval in digital libraries.

It uses the MultiSOM clustering and mapping method. The domain that has been chosen for this study is the domain of Computer Science in Germany. The analysis is conduced on a set of 438 websites of this domain using all together, thematic, geographic and linking information. It highlights interesting results concerning both global and local linking behaviour.

The use of ICT-based resources and services, library automation software, and general purpose application software is high among the Professional Assistants than the Junior Librarians and Assistant Librarians. The use of digital library and institutional repository software is very low among the library professionals. Majority of the professionals had confidence in routine ICT and Internet tasks, and need training or orientation in library automation, digital library and institutional repository software.

World Wide Web has propelled vigorous growth of the electronic forms of communication which simply does not fit into the traditional publishing format. With the coming age of e-Journals, there has been total transformation in the way scholarly communication is disseminated throughout the world. The use of e-journals saw a big jump in later half of the 90s and is continuing to escalate. On an average, one-half to nearly 100 per cent of the scientists in a field use e-journals at least part of the time. A research survey was undertaken amongst the 16 prestigious aerospace organisations in Bengaluru. The sampling boundary is restricted to these selected 16 organisations. Out of the 650 questionnaires distributed, 612 were received back, and finally 583 questionnaires suitable for the study were selected. The analysis is based on the responses from the aerospace scientists and engineers. The major observations include aerospace engineering e-Journals are extremely important to aerospace scientists or engineers and are a major source of scientific and technical information, the use patterns of aerospace engineering e-Journals amongst the 16 aerospace organisations are not uniform and hence show a heterogeneous nature in their use patterns. Also, the most preferred aerospace engineering e-Journals in the order of priority and usage (from the responses received) by this `niche' aerospace engineering community are: Aerospace Science and Technology; Progress in Aerospace Sciences; Journal of Aerospace Engineering; IEEE Transactions on Electronics and Aerospace Systems; Web of Science; Online Journals: Aerospace; Journal of Turbo and Jet Engines; The Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention (ASM International); European Space Bulletin-ESA; Informatics-J Gate; and International Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking.

Library use study helps in understanding the pattern of use of reading materials and provides basis for developing need-based document collection and redesigning their services. Results of the study of use of reading materials by B.E. and M. Tech. students, and teachers, and opinion of librarians regarding the use of reading materials by students and teachers in 50 Engineering Colleges in Karnataka State, including three deemed universities are presented. Majority of students and teachers visit library at least once in a week and on an average, they spend less than two hours during each visit. Purpose of visit to library is mainly to borrow text books. Students and teachers vary in their approach to locate reading materials in the library. Students directly go to the shelves and search for reading materials, while teachers consult OP AC to locate required reading materials. Students are found to use informal channels like discussion with friends and teachers, while teachers depend more on books and journals to satisfy their information needs. While B.E. students use reading materials mainly to prepare for examination and seminars, M. Tech. students use them for completing their project work. Teachers use the reading materials in the library mainly for teaching, preparation of research articles and research project reports. Text books and Indian journals are the most frequently used documents in the library. All the users are satisfied with the text book collection and Indian journals in their libraries. A strong positive association is found in the opinion among students, teachers and librarians regarding the above aspects, except the adequacy of document collection where there is only a marginal association.

Research productivity in Zoology, authorship pattern and nature of collaboration among the zoology scholars are studied by analyzing 236 theses and 719 thesis articles submitted by the scholars of the Zoology Department at the University of Burdwan in eleven subdivisions of Zoology during 1960-2000. The highest number of thesis submission was 64 and the highest number of article submission was 251 during the same time span 1986-1990. The highest number of theses (65) was submitted in Entomology followed by Parasitology (51), Fishery (29) and Cytology (28) respectively. The highest (48) number of theses were guided by Deb Kumar Chaudhuri. Authorship trend is towards multiauthored papers. The degree of collaboration is 0.51. The most prolific author was P.K. Choudhuri who topped the list with 80 papers during the period 1960-2000 followed by O.K. Choudhuri with 49 publications, S. Chakraborty with 49 publications, S.K. Ghosal with 45 publications, G. Majumdar with 44 publications and S.K Moitra with 44 publications. Among the top ranking journals publishing the papers are from India with 440 (61.18%) publications followed by Germany with 55(7.64%) publications, Netherlands with 45(6.25%) publications, USA with 40(5.56%) publications, China with 25(3.47%) publications and UK with 24(3.38%) publications. Among the six state Universities of West Bengal, Burdwan University has produced highest numbers (719) of articles followed by Calcutta University with 452 articles, Kalyani University with 316 articles and North Bengal University with 77 Zoology articles during the period 1960-2000.

Results based on testing the mean differences between companies of ISO certified and non ISO 9000 certified SMEs indicate that there are significant differences in performances between certified and non-certified companies, supporting the hypothesis that ISO 9000 certification contributes to a higher organizational performance. Having analyzed the survey questionnaire, the results of two tests of significance are described. The factors found lacking in practice are highlighted, and the SMEs' perceptions to successful TQM implementation are identified. The paper concludes with a summary highlighting the important findings from this study and future research directions.

This paper examines the impact of knowledge endowments on the economic growth of European regions by considering the channels through which they (labor productivity or employment) increase income levels (Per Capita GDP). A wide array of knowledge base indicators are considered here for explaining the growth performance of 150 developed NUTS 2 regions over the period 1995-2002. Their effect is estimated by controlling the occurrence of catching-up (or convergence), the regional structural features, and the presence of spatial correlation. The results show that Per Capita GDP (PCGDP) growth is positively affected by both the R & D intensity and the share of adults with tertiary education. However, while R and D is particularly effective in explaining the growth of labor productivity, the occupation ratio is significantly influenced by educational attainments. The policy message arising from these findings seems quite straightforward for the regions experiencing a virtuous pattern of economic growth, based on increases in both productivity and employment. For those characterized by a trade-off between the latter variables, the policy approach appears to be more problematic. The paper shows that such a trade-off is particularly evident for the developed regions of the Southern European countries.

This paper reflects on the evolution of a knowledge society - a key ingredient of economic competitiveness. More specifically, it reviews the relevant literature on the subject in order to perform a grounded theory case analysis on the policies of the National Library System (NLS) in Singapore. The research methodology comprises three stages-formulating a model for communal knowledge sharing, an environmental scan of news and policy releases about the national library, and in-depth interviews with senior library professionals about the impact of national libraries. The findings of the field study indicate that most information and knowledge professionals depend on an effective NLS to promote learning and knowledge sharing by cultivating social and relational capital as well as the well-understood structural repositories. The article concludes that effective policies inexorably lead to a culture for learning and development.
