Research evaluation of any organization is based on indicators of science and technology activity. Bibliometrics provides such tools to be applied to research evaluation. It provides quantitative approach in science studies. One of the areas in bibliometric research concerns the application of most commonly used bibliometric laws such as Lotka's law of scientific productivity and Zip's law of rank-size statistics. A study of ten-years data of papers published by scientists at National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune and also patents granted to NCL in the same period has been carried out to, examine the applicability of these laws. For all these cases, a Lotka-like distribution was observed with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. Zipf's law was also found to be satisfactorily applicable. Lorenz curves were plotted to see the relative productivity at NCL. The analysis indicates that 8 to 10% of scientists contributed to more than 90% of publications. The results also indicate that top 1% scientists are 10 times as productive as an average scientist.

Methodology for studying the quantitative profile of a research and teaching institute, with a view to get idea about its major research contributions, performance and impact in different fields of S&T. A number of quantitative and qualitative indicators have been used for studying the relative performance of the institute across various subject fields. Concludes that the three subjects, namely mathematics, biology and clinical medicine, although contributing smaller number of papers, secured first three ranks in terms of average normalized impact factor per paper. They have also done fairly well in terms of percentage of collaborative papers, but faired badly in terms of contributing to high quality papers, with the exception of clinical medicine. These three fields have performed the best in terms of publication effectiveness index.

It has been observed that Geometric and Truncated Poisson distributions adequately described the distribution of the number of authors per publication. The results also indicate that these distributions are valid in collaboration distributions over a period of time in the development of research speciality.

There are very few studies on collaboration in patenting in India. The understanding of collaboration in patenting is important for R&D managers in order to effectively organize R&D teams and distribute the benefits that may result from such collaborations. The paper looks into the nature of international collaboration in patenting, specially, the contributions by scientists from India. It also indicates the pattern of collaboration while patenting in India, particularly, reflecting upon the case of CSIR. It shows that there is significant amount of contribution by inventors from India in collaboration with inventors from other countries in patenting. There is a gradual decline in individual inventor patents from India. The contribution by teams of three inventors is maximum. The R&D managers should take initiatives to manage collaborations among individual researchers -bringing them together, creating healthy relationships among them and improving the work environment by minimizing and resolving the bottlenecks during collaboration.

Even as the society marches into a digital age, libraries and information centres have assumed greater responsibilities for meeting the diverse needs of its user community. The new technologies have largely aided in designing value-added library services. The emerging digital libraries are redefining the way by which user demands are being fulfilled. Among other resources, electronic journals occupy a prominent place in digital libraries, by providing access to 'online full-text information'. While historically, print journals have played an important role in information dissemination, the spiraling costs of the same have forced both 'information providing' and 'information seeking' community to look for cost-effective and reliable means of information dissemination. The paper, while studying the importance of pring electronic journals in information dissemination, applies the concept of 'value chain analysis' for obtaining a longitudinal understanding in terms of 'costs of production' and 'cost drivers' associated with it. Accordingly, a value chain distingushing the structure of production for print and electronic medium is drawn for identifying the different costs associated in different stages. Further, the paper proceeds to illustrate the competitive position of e-journal industry in terms of different structural cost drivers and pur forward a 'differentiation with cost strategy' for e-journal industry for achieving optimum benefits for different stakeholders involved in the process, viz., information providers, information managers adn information seekers.
