005117 Misra J (Tagore Library, Lucknow Univ, Lucknow-226 007) : Digital storage media : its care and handling. IASLIC Bull 2003, 48(2), 67-70.
In the present scenario, digital media has emerged as a powerful media of information storage. Compact discs are one of the digital media of information storage. CDs of all types share certain features. They all have the same physical dimensions, are made at least partially from clear polycarbonate plasting and have a metallic layer to reflect the laser beam that reads the data. Collection of audio CDs, CD-Rom multi-media titles, data discs and photo-CDs represent significant investment of money and efforts. Compared with other digital storage media (e.g. magnetic tape), CDs have much longer life expectancies. Proper handling, moderate storage conditions and good enclosures are all necessary for maximum useful life of CDs. Suggests some do's and don'ts for proper up-keeping of CDs. If these instructions are carefully followed, life of CDs can be increased in terms of their readability and data.

Libraries are using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for their operations and services by making huge investments and spending vast amounts of staff time for the selection, acquisition, retrieval, and dissemination of digital information. But the proliferation of computers, widespread acceptance of computer networks, explosive growth of Internet, increased reliance on electronic databases and the move form dedicated mainframe environments to client-server environments make libraries vulnerable to security threats. It is very essential to take all measures to protect the ICT infrastructure from security threats. However, libraries are lagging behind in realizing the need to protect their ICT resources and services from misuse, damage, theft, sabotage, mistake, etc. This paper discusses secutity risks, strategies for security, security policy, personnel security, physical security, software security, network security, Internet security, access control, protection against computer viruses, protectin of public terminals and backup information. The paper also discusses the need for professional assignments for library security and the importance of security training for library professionals.

Asian J Libr Inf Sci 2010, 2(1-4), 26-38.
This article reports on a study carried out on secondary school students in Malaysia regarding the ICT-related aspects. The emergence of ICT has provided people with great opportunity to find almost all information they need. However, with the issues like information overload and unreliable yet misleading pieces of information, being highly information literate is very important in becoming lifelong learners. This study provides an understanding on how the secondary school students use the ICT for various purposes including information seeking activities. Their frequency of use, places of use and skills in using the ICT were also assessed and reported. There were 920 secondary school students nationwide whose schools were randomly selected involved in this study. A questionnaire was used to find out their information skills background, information sources preference and other ICT-related aspects. Among the findings were the students had a positive view on ICT but their ICT use was unsatisfactory. They preferred to use non-digital sources of information although they had background knowledge in information skills and mostly had the experience using the ICT. The findings indicated that the ICT was not fully utilized by the students to develop their information literacy skills. It was recommended that more ejforts to be done to ensure that students use the ICT frequently which focused more on the information seeking activities.

In India, Ascidians research is gaining momentum in the field of Zoology. To evaluate scientific development, social development and impact of science and technology, etc. the scientometrics is considered as bibliometric measurement. The Growth Pattern of literature on ascidians in this article aims to study the actual growth of literature, which in turn helps to determine the growth trend through Relative Growth Rate (RGR) and the Doubling Time (Dt). Data was collected from PubMed, the free open source bibliographical database from National Library of Medicine (NLM) for the period 1998 to 2008 and retrieved 1630 hits. There was steady growth for the period 1998 to 2003, but a sudden fall after the year 2003 and the same condition prolonged up to the year 2005. There exist rise in the years 2006 and 2007. After the year 2007, there is a slight decrease in the growth trend. This study reveals that the Relative Growth Rate (RGR) is inversely proportional to Doubling Time Dt(P) of publications on ascidians literature. The zoologists may concentrate and contribute more to this new field of research, especially in lndia.

Progress of modern society depends a great deal upon the provision of the right kind of information in the right form at the right time. As information is valuable, it must be put to proper use. In order to serve the users efficiently and effectively, one must ascertain the needs of users in terms of information requirements. In the recent years the impact of information technology is influencing the nature of collection and building of information services which has an over all impact in the library setup. Similarly the information seeking behaviour of the users are also changing from time to time with the introduction of IT in the library and information centres. Librarians are becoming increasingly aware of the needs to study the users as a means of making more informed decisions about library services. Such studies seem more relevant when precious library budgets have to be stretched as far as they could be. User studies have now been well accepted and are performed by various methods. There is considerable accumulation of literature in user studies and more and more is being generated. Agricultural Universities are giving significance to the provision of library services. Correspondingly, there seems to be an increasing trend in the use of information services by its clientele. It is the user behavior or information use pattern that shapes the nature and mode of services that are being provided. A change in the information gathering habits of users will certainly bring a corresponding change and necessities of the related nature of services that are to be provided. ''The scientific, technological and engineering disciplines and the management techniques use information handling and processing. Their application, computers and their interaction with men and machines are associated with social, economic 'and cultural matters".

Due to shift of print editions to e-forms and their proliferation, we have felt the need of going into resource sharing through purchasing due to escalating costs of journals; pricing and licensing models. In Indian context, consortia deals are more acutely felt and initiatives started much later compared to many developed countries. To begin with, a small group of like minded library professionals shared coming together and make headways for negotiating consortia terms and conditions so as to access large amount of information with optimum payment. The paper highlights the importance of library consortia in this digital era stating its salient features and consortia models. This paper also discusses about the HELINET Consortium.
