The process of killing the pupa in multi-bivoltine cocoons using salt and hot air drying methods were studied for its influence on reeling performance and quality of raw silk. The cocoons packed with salt in a bag was found to suffocate the cocoons and kill them but the reeling performance and quality of raw silk was found to be deteriorated compared to hot air drying of cocoons. Compared to salt drying the hot air drying was found to harden the sericin uniformly thereby improving the reeling characteristics viz., reeliability percentage and reducing the waste percentage on silk weight and pelage weight. Further, the quality characteristics viz., neatness, cleanness, tenacity and cohesion were improved by hot drying of cocoons compared to salt drying method. The raw silk percentage, raw silk recovery percentage and elongation of raw silk did not later significantly by both the methods of drying. The study clearly revealed that hot air drying of multi-bivoltine cocoons significantly improved the reeling performance and quality of raw silk produced compared to cocoons dried using salt.

The composition and properties of a series of shealth/core composite polypropylene fibres nonwovens with different phase change material (PCM) contents in the core have been studied using SEM, DSC and temperature sensors. It is observed that the PCM content in the fibre, sheath/core ratio and the content of 4-hole spiral crimp PET fibre affect the temperature regulating ability of the nonwoven. The temperature regulating ability has no truck with the fibre titer in the experimental scale. There can be a maximum temperature difference of 9.3°C between the nowwovens made from composites and control (polypropylene) fibres during temperature rising, and 10.2°C between control and composite samples during temperature dropping.

The treatment conditions for alkali dweighting of acid-modified mutlicomponent copolyester fibres have been optimized. The satisfactory silk-like effect is observed under the specific treatment conditions (7.5g/L NaOH, 85°C temperature, 40 min treatment time, 1:40 material-to-liquor ratio, and 1.0g/L promoter]. After alkali deweighting, the special micro-pit structure occurs on the surface of acid-modified fibres which enhances the fibre permeability, adhesion regain, capability of colouring and feel. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the degree of crystallization of fibre decreases after alkali peeling.

The kniting potential of acrylic-cotton OE rotor-spun yans has been assessed. The knot strength ratio and loop strength ratio have been used as important factors in evaluating the knittability. Both the ratios increase with the increase in acrylic content and exceed the performance requirement limit for knitting. The knittability of acrylic-majority yarns is superior to that of cotton-majority yarns, although the acrylic- majority yarns are more stiffer. Additional advantages of acrylic-majority yarns are their lower twist liveliness, higher elongation, higher bulk and lower hairiness.

How best the yarns of a given spinning system can be sized with optimum cost to overcome attritive forces acting on warp yarns during weaving has been studied.Polyester/viscose (70:30) yarns (30s) obtained from the three spinning systems, viz. air-jet, ring and rotor, were sized with cold brand PVA and tested for abrasion and tensile properties. Using these yarns in warp, a plain weave fabric was woven on a Dornier Rapier loom. The yarns were then unravelled from the fabric and tsted for the abrasion and tensile properties. It is observed that among the ring, rotor and air-jet yarns, the excellent abrasion resistance is obtained with air-jet yarn at higher size concentration and slow rate of drying. This is because at higher concentration there is good size film formation on the yarn surface and at slow rate of drying more outward size migration takes place, resulting in better size encapsulation.An air-jet yarn whose strength properties are derived from the tightness and compression of the surface wrappings is, therefore, protected from the abrasion forces, caused during weaving, by this size film for a longer duration.

A comparative study on influence of structural differences of ring-and rotor-spun cotton yarns on the process of sizing and the performance of sized yarns against abrasion has been carried out suing the 6s and 16s ring and rotor yarns sized with cold and hot brand PVA at different concentrations (9%, 7% and 5%) and drying rates (70°C and 140°C). It is observed that, in general, the abrasion resistance of rotor yarns is better than that of ring yarns. The rotor yarns give better abrasion resistance at 140°C because the higher temperature reduces size migration from inside to surface of the yarn, thereby ensuring more uniform deposition of size along the cross-section of the yarn. A better size distribution reinforces the open structure of rotor yarns and improves cohesion.

The bacteria-resist properties of various natural medicinal products, like clove oil, neem oil, tulsi oil and karanja oil, have been studied. Among these products, the clove and neem oils show good anti-bacterial property; clove oil shows excellent anti-bacterial property on cotton fabric. The wash fastness of finished cotton fabric can be improved by using KVSI (Dimethylol dihydroxyethylene urea based in-built catalyst) as cross-linking agent. The effect of anti-bacterial finish on other functional fabric properties has also been studied and it is observed that 1% clove oil + KVSI treatment gives the optimum results.

Polyester microdenier (0.8 dpf) and normal denier (2.17 dpf) multifilament fabrics have been subjected to swelling pretreatment in single and mixed solvents of varying ratio at room temperature for different durations prior to dyeing with disperse dye. The treated fabrics have been evaluated for changes in denier, weight loss, area shrinkage, breaking temacity, breaking elogation critical dissolution time, surface depth of colour, dye uniformity and light fastness. Among the three single solvents used, the pretreatment with 100% xylene for 60 min at room temperature shows significant improvement in surface depth of colour and better balance of above properties for both microdenier and normal demier polyester fibrics. The use of a mixture of xylene and dimethyly formamide in the ratio of 1:2 for 60 min at room temperature shows the highest increase in surface depth of colour without much affecting the above physical properties. Dye bath additives like antioxidant and UV absorber were used and UV absorber were used and UV absorbers are proved to be beneficial for improving light fastness. Among all the UV absorbers used, benzophenone shows, the best results even at a very low dose (0.5%).

The influence of operational factors on friction in acrylic fibres of 38 mm and 1.65 dtex has been studied. The increase in normal force decreases the coeficient of friction and results in a more pronounced stick-slip effect. The values for friction indices `a' and `n' in the equation F=aN_a are found to be 0.71 and 0.90 respectively. The sliding speed has a great influence on the smoothness of fibre movement. The stick-slip effect is more pronounced at slow sliding speds and progressively reduces at higher speeds with the results that the difference `μ_s-μ_d' becomes smaller. The decrease in the area of contact (fringe width) decreases the coefficient of friction.

The twist-structure of friction-spun yarns has been explored through the development of an accurate method of twist measurement. It has been found that the optical method, based on the measurement of fibre helix angle and helix diameter through the well-known tracer fibre technique, is the most accurate technique for measuring twist. The twist values obtained by this method have been found to correlate well with those given by other methods of twist testing. Corresponding correlation coefficients and the regression equations have been derived. The position of the integrating fibres along the length of the fibre assembly zone does not influence the amount of twist inserted in open-end DREF-II yarn. The level of twist is determined by the fibre proces parameters under which the yarn is spun. Twist level drops with the increase in fibre length from 25 mm to 44 mm but shows a slight increase thereafter. The coarser yarns show lower twist than the finer ones. The use of coarser fibres results in lower amount of twist in the yarn while an increase in suction pressure increase it.

Air-jet textured, textured-twisted and textured-plied yarns have been made from apparel-grade polyester flat yarns and compared with commercial cotton and spun polyester sewing threads for properties and seam efficiency. The uniformity characteristics of air-jet textured sewing threads are far superior to those of cotton and spoun polyester threads. The tenacity, loop strength and knot strength of textured sewing threads are lower than those of spun polyester threads but slightly better than those of cotton threads. Textured threads have high friction values than commercial threads. The seam efficiency of fabrics stitched with textured threads in higher compared to that of fabrics stitched with cotton threads and close to that of fabrics stitched with spun polyester threads. Minimum knot strength has a good correlation with seam efficiency.

The loop length which is decided during the knitting process and the yarn tension developed inside the knitting zone are the two crucial output variables of the loop forming system and hence used to validate the proposed model of 1x1 rib loop formation on a dial and cylinder machine. For the purpose, 66 fabric samples have been produced with known input variables. The loop length of the dry-relaxed fabrics has been measured in first 50 samples and the cam force during knitting has been measured in last 16 samples. These measured values have been compared with the predicted values of the model generated, employing the same input variables. Barring a few cases, there is a reasonable agreement between measured and predicted values. The causes of disagreement are also traced wherever possible. The actual amount of overestimation/underestimation of the model is also calculated. The mode, in general, slightly underestimates the loop length. The peak cam force also tends to be underestimated at CLP2 and overestimated at CKP.

The cam force, i.e. the yarn tension, inside the knitting zone for a complete loop forming cycle has been measured on a dieal and cylinder machine equipped with 1X1 rib gating to validate the model developed for the purpose and to understand the mechanics of loop formation. A separate cam track has been designed for running the isolated measuring needle and other necessary modifications have been made on the cam jacket for installation of the quartz force link. The cam force signals generated by the quartz force link fitted on the stitch cam are recorded in computer through analog-to-digital convertor. The recorded digital values are then plotted with the help of available software for getting cam force curves which have, in general, four peaks.

Lighter shades were obtained after dyeing of bleached jute fabric with the above extracts withot applying mordant. Dye uptake increased with the increase in mordant concentration. The use of mordant in the dyeing of jute fabric resulted tin deeper shade with good wash fastness.

Poly (ethylene terephthalate)/cotton fabrics have been reated in low-temperature plasmas to increase the hydrophilicity and, therefore, to impart soil resistance and to improve dyeability. The fabrics have been treated in glow-discharge apparatus using acrylic acid and water plasmas. Two alternative modifications were applied. The plasma conditions such as exposure time and discharge power were varied to control the extent of plasma surface modification in the first approach, while the acrylic acid content and the incubation time were changed in the second approach. It is observed that glow-discharge treatment significantly improves the wettability of the fabrics. More hydrophilic surfaces are created due to the treatment and, therefore, the dyeability of the fabrics is much better. No significant colour change, neither with repeated washing cycles nor with long period of storage, is observed.

The influence of first nozzle pressure, gauge length, main draft and condenser width on the initial modulus and flexural rigidity of polyester and viscose yarns has been studied using the Box-Behnken experimental design. The interaction effect among the process variables has been analyzed. It is observed that the initial modulus and flexural rigidity of jet-spun yarn increase with the increase in first nozzle pressure, gauge length and condenser width individually when the other variables are set at lower levels. However, the above yarn characteristics may decrease with the change of one variable at a time keeping the other variables at higher levels. The changes in yarn flexral rigidity with the process variables can be predicted from the yarn initial modulus.

Ring-spun yarns of different counts and fibrous materials have been studied for irregularity and imperfectins. The irregularity- length equations have been developed using five different cut lengths (10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000 mm) to deduce irregularity-length indices (m and a). The values of `m' and `a' for all the yarns are found to be -0.25 and 22.5-29.7 respectively. The irregularity is found to be correlated highly, fairly and poorly with thin places (-30%), thick places (+50%) and neps (+200%) respectively for various yarns studied.

Air-jet texturing of polyester/wool blended spun yarn has been carried out and woven and knitted fabrics have been produced using parent and textured yarns. The properties of parent and textured yarns and of the fabrics produced using parent and textured yarns have been compared. It is observed that the yarn bulk increases while the tensile and evenness properties become inferior on air-jet texturing. The textured yarn fabrics have lower air permeability, higher thermal resistance, higher abrasion resistance and inferior strength-related properties as compared to the parent yarn fabrics. Air-jet textured polyester/wool blend spun yarns can be used where higher comfort-related properties are desirable.

Wild silk yarns and fabrics have been graft copolymerized two monomers, namely methyl methacrylate (MMA) methacrylic acid (MAA), using potassium peroxidisulphate and ceric ammonium sulphate to minimize homopolymer nation. The optimum conditions of grafting have been standardized. The changes in the dyeing behaviour using acid, and reactive dyes have also been investigated to understand whether the grafting should be carried out before, after and dyeing operation. It is observed that the graft copolymerization with MAA and MMA affects the dyeability of silk. The effect on various physical properties of silk fibres grafted before and after dyeing is quite noteworthy. The higher the add-on the more is variation in physical properties. The dyeing followed by grafting using reactive dyes shows properties and is recommended for weighting of silk on industrial scale.

The influence of proportion of sheath content and thermal treatment under the relaxed condition on thermal shrinkage, sheat-slipping resistance and tensile properties of DREF-III friction-supun core yarns made of polyester multifilament core and cotton sheath has been studied both in dry and wet state. It is observed that the thermal treatment markedly increases the thermal shrinkage and sheath-slipping resistance. The sheath-slipping resistance of wet treated yarns is found to be higher than that of dry treated yarns. Breaking elongation increases with the increase in treatment temperature. The increase in proportion of sheath fibre content decreases the thermal shrinkage and increases the sheath-slipping resistance and breaking strenth.

The properties of plain woven fabrics made of DREF-III yarns having staple fibre core-sheath yarn, twistless core component and hollow sheath component in weft and 2-ple cotton ring-spun yarn in warp have been studied. Three different types of weft yarn, namely 59 tex yarn with staple viscose fibre in both core and sheath, 118 tex yarn with staple viscose fibre in core and water-soluble staple PVA fibre in sheath, and 118 tex yarn with PVA in core and viscose in sheath, were prepared ion DREF-III system using 50:50 core-sheath ratio. It is observed that the fabric made from twistless core component in weft shows very good tensile strength, tear strength, crease recovery and abrasion resistance whereas the fabric with hollow sheath component in weft shows bulky and compressible structure.

The effect of various roving and drafting parameters like roving hank, roving TM, top arm pressure, spacer size and break draft on apron slippage has been studied. It is observed that both bottom apron slippage and apron-to-apron slippage change with the change in the above parameters. With the change in these parameters, when the apron slippage increases the yarn quality in general deteriorates and vice versa.

Graft copolymerization of methylmethacrylate and acrylamide onto Antheraea assama silk fibre was carried out in aqueous medium using Ce^TV initiator system. The extent of grafting was evaluated as a function of reaction time and temperature. The grafted products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. Their thermal behaviour was studied by TG and DTG techniques in static air at 20°C min^-1 in the range 30-800°C and the surface characteristics were studied with the help of scanning electron microscopy. The grafted fibres exhibited absence of water staining with decrease in water retention values and increase in tensile strength.
