Around 100 different samples of commercially popular silk fabrics were collected and tested for fabric constructional particulars and two functional properties, viz abrasion resistance and bursting strength. The silk fabrics were tested for abrasion resistance on both Taber type and Martindale testers and the end point of the test was determined as per the pinhole and weight loss methods. Abrasion resistance, expressed in terms of number of cycles to form a pin-hole, showed better consistency in terms of various inter-relationships. The interdependence of factors influencing the abrasion resistance with other functional properties have also been deduced.

The influence of add-on finish and process variables on the recovery propertics of jet-spun polyester yarns has been studied using the Box-Behnken design. It is observed that the add-on finish plays a key role in determining the immediate elastic recovery of jet-spun polyester yarns which tends to increase with the increase in level of add-on finish. Immediate elastic recovery hardly alters with spinning speed but it increases significantly with the increase in both first nozzle pressure and main draft. Both delayed clastic recovery and permanent set, on the other hand invariably decrease with increasing main draft and are considerably lower for the yarns spun with higher add-on finish than for the yarns spun without fininsh. An increase in spinning speed increases the permanent set but adversely affects the delayed recovery.

Test speed produces large change in the hairiness, the magnitude being dependent mainly on the processing factors. Hairiness in linearly related with yarn linear density. No direct distinct statistical relationship could be evidenced on comparing the instrumental readings recorded by Uster-3 tester and Zweigles hairness meter.

Photothermal conversion and thermo-regulated fibres (PCTFs) have been prepared using the fibre-forming polymer containing photothermal conversion ceramic as sheath and the fibre-forming polymer containing microPCMs as core. The structures and properties of the PCT fibres, such as mechanical property, photothermal conversion ability, and temperature regulating ability, have been studied using DSC, IR lamp, temperature sensors and SEM. It is observed that the photothermal conversion and thermo-regulated fibres have better photothermal conversion and temperature-regulating abilities when compared with the control. The maximum heat absorbing and heat releasing temperature differences are found to be 4.5°C and 6.5°C respectively when the PCTF nonwoven is compared with PP nonwoven.

The effect of low-temperature plasma treatment on the surface modification of cotton and polyester fabrics has been investigated. The experimental results show that the method is useful in improving the wettability of cotton and polyester fabrics. The surface resistivity of cottoan and polyester is dramatically reduced after plasma treatment. Low-temperature plasma method practically eliminates the application of chemical reagents for technological needs and attains the processing of unbleached cotton fabrics in air plasma of glow discharge followed by washing in hot water.

Gret jute fibre has been alkali-treated and bleached at ambient temperature using sodium hydroxide by different process sequences namely true single-bath process of alkali treatment and bleaching, and pseudo single-bath process of alkali treatment and bleaching and then cold dyed with procion Red M8B and Remazol Yellow FG. The effect of process sequences on physico-chemical properties of jute fibres has been evaluated. It is observed that the alkali treatment for 1 h using 60 gpl sodium hydroxide and 1:3 material-to-liquor ratio following the pseudo single-bath alkali treatment and ambient temperature bleaching process gives the optimum dyeing results. The treated fibre samples show sufficiently high whiteness index and dye uptake. The increase in dye uptake is about 18% in case of Procion Red M8B and about 42% in case of Remazol Yellow FG. As all the treatments have been carried out at ambient temperature, this process is highly suitable for cottage and small-scale industries in rural areas.

Fabric extension and recovery characteristics in relation to the fabric fractional cover, nature of weft yarns (air-jet tectured yarn/spun yarn), doubling of single yarn and filament fineness in air-jet textured yarn have been analysed. It is observed that the spun yarn fabric shows better dimensional stability and shape retention property in terms to higher immediate recorvery and resiliencey, and lower delayed recovery and permanent set as compared to the testured yarn fabric. Single yarn fabric possesses greater immediate recovery and resiliency along weft direction as compared to doubled yarn fabric. The finer filament textured yarn fabric shows lower immediate recovery and resiliency than that of the coarser filament textured yarn fabric.

A novel rotor wrapping twister has been used for preparing ply yarn consisting of polypropylene nonwoven selvedges, copper wires and polyester filaments. It is observed that the ply yarn produced with this rotor twister possesses superior electrical and mechanical properties due to the natural charcteristics of the filaments. The ply yarn has been produced on the rotor wrapping twister under different conditions of twister count and rotor speed and then woven on a rapier loom. By varying manufacturing parameters the helix angle and tightness of the twist-wrapped yarn can also be changed to enhance its mechanical properties and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. The optimal conditions for producing the ply yarn wrapped with metallic filaments are 8000 rpm rotor speen and 2.5 turns/cm warping count, and that for wrapped with polyester filaments are 6000 rpm and 1.0 turn/cm.

EIB-MTH hairiness tester, Shirley hairiness tester, Laserspot and Uster Tester 3 have been used to observe the relationship between hairiness results obtained when different measuring principles on these instruments are used. The effect of blend ratio and winding on hairiness properties properties of ring-spun yarns has also been assessed. Almost all the measuring instruments reported increase in yarn hairiness after winding. A high correlation has been found between the test results obtained on these instruments.

The influence of flyer speed, top roller pressure and size of middle condenser in the drafting resion on various characteristics of roving and yarn has been studied. The Box and Behnken factorial design has been used to optimize these speed frame machine variables. In each case the optimum conditions within the industrially acceptable limits of the process are established. It is observed that the flyer speed higher than 1040 rpm and the top roller pressure higher than 2.2 kg/cm₂are not suitable within the experimental zone explored. The optimum middle condenser width is found to be 8 mm with the present experimental set-up.

The effect of twist on the performance of polyethylene naphthalate dimensionally stable polyester and high-tenacity polyester cord yarns has been studied. It is observed that the twist has a very important effect on the tensile properties, creep properties and fracture mechanism. An increase in the twist level increases breaking elongation and creep rate but decreases breaking strength. Breaking mechanisms are also affected by the twist level. However, it is found that the material has the most important role on the cord performance.

Changes in textile-related properties of jute fibre consequent to its treatment with plain water,steam, dilute aqueous NaOH solution and different oxidising agents such as H₂O₂ K₂S₂ O₈ and NaIO₄ have been studied under specified conditions. It is observed that the steam treatment of wet jute fibre for 30 min at 121°C 0.5% dilute NaOH treatment at 30°C for 60 min or at boil for 30 min, and oxidative treatment using only 3% H₂ O₂ at 85°C for 2 h and a combination of 3% H₂O₂ and 0.75% K₂S₂O₈at 30°C for 2h produce promising textile-related properties, such as weight loss, moisture absorption, tenacity retention, coefficient of friction, flexural rigidity, surface reflectance, dyeability and whiteness, yellowness and brightness indices. Jute fibres from the above prospective treatments have further been studied in respect of their spinnability. The treatment with 0.5% NaOH solution for 60 min at 30°C and the oxidative treatment using a combination of 3% H₂O₂ and 0.75% K₂S₂O₈ at 30°C for 2h are found to be promising in respect of energy efficiency and fibre droppage during carding, trouble-free spinning (zero to low end breakage rate) yarn structure (packing fraction and structural irregularities) and yarn properties like tenacity, initial modulus, flexural rigidity, quality ratio and work of rupture.

Pulp and paper mill effluent (COD =0.7 kg/m³) was treated for the removal of non-biodegradable and toxic compounds by wet air oxidation (WAO) using heterogeneous catalysts. The catalysts include (CuO-ZnO) supported on alumina and ceria as well as lanthanum based perovskites. The activity tests were carried out at 95°C under atmospheric pressure conditions. A maximum COD reduction of 83 per cent for (CuO-ZnO)/CeO₂ catalyst was obtained in 2 h reaction time at a catalyst conc. of 5 kg/m³ and the initial pH of wastewater sample at 3.0. LaCoO₃ catalyst showed the maximum COD reduction in the basic medium (pH 9.0), whereas the two other catalysts were active in acidic region.

Nine cottons differing widely in fibre properties have been spum on a set of modern machinery to different counts ranging from 20s to 100s to establish the relationship between the fibre properties and the yarn strength/yarn unevenness. For assessing fibre properties, HVI (high volume instruments) test system and for assessing yarn properties, lea strength tester, single yarn strength lester and evenness tester were used. Two expressions one for predicting Rkm value and the other for predicting yarn irregularity, from newer fibre length and strength parameters measured on HVI testing system using HVI test mode have been derived. The overall fibre in HVI mode has been found to be about 2.25 times of that obtained in ICC mode.

Long strand fibres have been extracted from the stems of bhindi plant (Hibiscus esculentus Linn) using converntional retting process, Carded into sliver and then used for making paper-fibre-fibre-paper laminates. The laminates have been prepared by sandwiching 9-41 wt% of fibres between two sheets of packaging-grade paper and bonded by hot pressing the sandwich in the presence of starch-based adhesives. The laminates thus prepared show better tearing and bending resistance than the laminates made from pure paper sheets. Laminates with 41 wt% fibres show increase in tearing resistance by 400% and in bending resistance by 1200%. Tensile properties and peeling resistance have been found to be reasonable and dependent on the amount of adhesive used. The developed paper-fibre laminates are potential candidates for use as a low-cost alternative to high-grade corrugated paper laminates in packaging industry and offer additional value to the farmers of bhindi plant.
