Gebeng is a rapidly growing industrial area in Pahang, Malaysia. The study was conducted to explore the pollution level and to find out the human interference on surface water quality. The highly polluted parameters were BOD, COD, DO, ammonical nitrogen, phosphate, Pb, Cu, Cd, Co and As and most of the stations categorized as polluted (Class III and IV). Heavy metals like Pb, Cu, Co, Cd and Aswere higher at upstream river zone and highly polluted nevertheless the downstream zone and surface water were comparatively less polluted. Industrial wastes and effluents increased the contamination levels of the studied water.

Organophosphate insecticide Nuvan (DDVP) has selected for the present study, Lethal concentrations were calculated for the fresh water snake headed fish Channa punctatus i.e 0.27ml/L after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. For the chronic study 1/10th of the Nuvan concentration (0.027ml/L) was provided to the observed fishes. Blood serum lipoprotein HDL, VLDL and LDL High Density lipoprotein, Very low Density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein respectively were estimated after chronic toxic stress of Nuvan to fish Channa punctatus. Fish serum lipoprotein and HDL revealed significant decrease level while LDL and VLDL showed significant elevated level after 7, 14, 21, and 28 days at different level p <62>0.01 and p <60>0.001.All values are mentioned in graphs respectively.

Medicine available to control birth rate carrying side effects. The attempt of exploring the importance of Ayurveda the present work was carried out. The methanol extract of the plant Elytraria acualis was prepared by maceration technique. Extract effects the fertility by reducing the sperm count and motility in the albino rats. The male albino rats were divided into three groups of eight animals in each. The first group was considered as control and Group II, III were treated with dose 200mg/kg and 300mg/kgextracts respectively. The treatment of the extract was carried out by gastric gavage for 21 days through oral. On 22nd day all rats were sacrificed to study sperm count and motility. The blood samples were centrifuged to separate serum. The serum samples used for the serological parameters. The reduced levels of vital reproductive organs weights and sperm count, motility were observed in the treated rats compare to control. The cholesterol, triglycerides increased and glucose levels were decreased in the serum of treated rats. The glycogen and protein levels of testes and liver were decreased in the treated groups than to the control group. The histological sections of testes in treated groups were observed that loss of interstitium and degenerated germinal cells were also observed in the treated groups. The effect of the extract was more in group -III compare to group- II.

Nematode specimens collected during a survey from the faecal samples of the Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibious), captivated at the Alipore Zoological Garden, Kolkata, India. The specimens were carefully studied and identified as a new genus and species Hippopotamenema aliporensis under the superfamily Cosmocercoidea and family Atractidae. The new genus and the species differs from all other valid atractid genera in the presence of the features-oral opening ventrally directed; mouth without lips; cephalic region ornamented with two submedian and two subventral papillae and a pair of lateral amphids; buccal cavity, small, broad, `U' -shaped and with a pair of oesophageal teeth; neck region bounded by a collarette, attached anteriorly and with a free bell-shaped hyaline sheath.

Adult Eudichogaster kinneari were exposed to a safe concentration (0.6 ppm) of Dimethoate for twenty days to evaluate the effects on histoarchitecture of cerebral and sub pharyngeal ganglion of brain. Brain was severely affected with exposure of above insecticide, causing degeneration of neurosecretory cells (NSCs). Initially neurosecretory cells exhibited accelerated neurosecretory activity while repeated treatment led exhaustion of neurosecretory material (NS M). The neurosecretory cells lost their normal shape along with many morphological alterations, vacuolization were seen in cytoplasm, nucleoplasm, neurosecretory material and in neuropile, ultimately caused imbalance and lethal effect. Size enhancement in cell area, nuclear diameter, cell length and axon length of neurosecretory cells (p<62>0.001) were observed significantly.

DNA barcoding is widely used for specie cataloging for unambiguous identification and conservation. In the present study, baseline information on the DNA barcoding of mitochondrial CO1 gene of some randomly caught West African birds were provided with five newly reported sequences for Tringa sp, Streptopelia decipens, Francolinus bicalcaratus, Tyto alba and Francolinus squamatus. S pecies identifications were made by comparing unknown CO1sequences against the DNA barcodes of known species through distance-based tree construction and alignment searching. The newly generated sequences are deposited in GenBank under accession numbers JX160000 - JX160017 and JX220905. Current study may contribute towards the development of a reference DNA barcoding database of West African birds.

Acanthocephalan fauna are distributed globally as visceral parasites of vertebrates and arthropods. Morphological description of four known species of the newly described class Polyacanthocephala has been replete with controversies. However, Mitochondrial COI gene of two new cystacanths sequences; Polyacanthorhynchus nigerianus n.sp. (NG1KC904074) and Polyacanthorhynchus echiyensis n.sp. (NG₅ KC904075) infecting some parentenic individuals of Synodontis batensoda in Nigeria were sequenced. The resulting sequences were aligned with 36 other sequences of acanthocephalans representing three widely recognized classes; Archiacanthocephala, Palaeacanthocephala and Eoacanthocephala. The only representative of the new class Polyacanthocephala in the GenBank/NCBI Polyacanthorhynchus caballeroi (DQ089724) formed a common clade with these two new sequences. This study thus supports existence of the new class Polyacanthocephala as an independent class within Acanthocephala.

Concentrations of Ag, Cu and Zn were studied in muscle and liver of Barbus plebejus, Cyprinus carpio and Leuciscus cephalus from Kilickaya Reservoir. The heavy metal analysis of samples were carried out by using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The mean heavy metal concentrations of Ag, Cu and Zn were obtained as 1.47±3.44, 1.65±3.31 and 2.89±4.52 μg/g in muscle and 1.78±4.19, 2.07±3.28 and 10.58±3.88 μg/g respectively in liver for Barbus plebejus, the corresponding figures were 9.67±1.36, 3.53±4.56 and 11.64±21.79 μg/g in muscle and 10.06±1.14, 5.10±4.94 and 55.28±40.77 μg/g in liver for Cyprinus carpio and 8.54±1.55, 1.58±2.93 and 3.16±4.52 μg/g in muscle and 8.15±3.14, 3.35±5.13 and 13.73±11.82 μg/g in liver for Leuciscus cephalus. Zinc concentrations differed significantly between the two tissues (p<60>0.001). There was a weak and negative correlation of age, total length, weight of fish with metal concentrations for Cu in liver of Leuciscus cephalus (r=-0.599*, p=0.030; r=0.030; r=-0.476, p=0.100; r=-0.100; r=-0.470, p=0.105). The concentrations of the Cu and Zn were below the acceptable limit for human consumption in muscle and liver of Barbus plebejus, Cyprinus carpio and Leuciscus cephalus.

Study was carried out to assess the anticancer activity of methanol extracts of internal bone of L.duvauceli and S. pharaonis for cell viability and toxicity on HepG2 liver cancer cells. The bone extracts had significant cytotoxicity on HepG2 cell in different concentrations (100,500,1000 μg/ml). Methanol fraction of squid bone powder showed cell death at a higher concentration of 1000μg. 27% toxicity was observed at 100μg/ml and 37% at 1000μg/ml. The viability of cuttlefish bone powder ranged from 58% (1000μg/ml) to 68% (100μg/ml). Hep G2 cells experienced a significant decrease in viability at low concentration with an eventual decline at the highest concentration. The percentage of toxicity of cuttle bone extracts varied from 32 to 42. Minimum toxicity of 32% was observed at 100μg and maximum of 42% was observed at 1000μg concentration and IC 50 at a concentration of <62>1000μg. The percentage of toxicity showed increasing trend with increasing concentration of the extract. The result suggested that the cephalopods bone is a source to be considered in the discovery of drug development for cancer.

Study has been carried to find out the distribution of different parasites in Exotic carps with respect to different months and seasons. These were isolated and identified from the fishes sampled randomly from five fish markets, which were representing South 24 parganas district, West Bengal. During the study period ten different types of parasites were observed such as Trichodina sp, Chilodonella sp, Trichinella sp., Acanthocephala sp, Nematodes, Epistylis sp, Zoothamnium sp, Vorticella sp, developmental stages of eggs or parasites and some parasites (unidentified) among which most of the parasites were protozoan. Among all the parasites the most dominant were Trichodina sp, Chilodonella sp and Nematodes. Winter was the most vulnerable period to get parasitic infestation. During this period the water quality get deteriorated and the fishes were in stressed condition which favours the parasites to infest. Some parasites were found more during summer which favours their reproduction due to the availability of their intermediate host. In monsoon the temperature fluctuates which also favours growth of some parasites. During the study period Trichinella sp were found solely in Cyprinus carpio exclusively in winter.The protozoan parasites were most available during winter and these were the dominant parasites in exotic carps. These parasites were found mostly on gills and skin of the fishes where as nematodes were found in the intestine and body cavity of the fishes.

Juveniles of the African cat fish Clarias gariepinus (Burchel) of standard length 16.50 ± 00.25 cm and weight 14.75 ± 1.25 g were exposed to methanol extract of Jatropha gossypifolia L. Ten fish were placed in each glass aquaria of nominal concentrations 0.00, 3.00,4.00, 5.00, 6.00 and 7.00 mgl^{-1 in three replications for 96 hours to determine the acute toxicity using flow through bioassay. The caudal peduncle was severed and blood was collected from the caudal arteries. Haematological parameters showed that the Red Blood Cell (RBC), Haematocrit (Ht), were significantly lower to the control at P=0.05. There was clear case of Haemodilation or erythrocyte destruction or haemolysis from the treated fish as opposed to control. These observations were also dose dependent. The Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) and Neutrophils increased significantly at P=0.05 in fish treated with methanol extract of J. gossypifolia in concentration dependent pattern. These increases were aimed at improving immunological status of the fish as it combats the effects of extracts. Basophils, eosinophils and monocytes were not seen, largely due to their uncertain nature. The use of Jatropha gossypifolia as a means of mass fish harvest distorts the natural haematological parameter of the fish owing to the poisonous nature of the ichthyotoxins in the plant. This implies that other non target organisms will be negatively affected and biomagnifications through food chain is possible.}

Nawagaon wetland situated on Mahanadi river basin in Raipur District of Chhattisgarh, has 82.12 ha water spread area. Diurnal variation of plankton was studied in the wetland during summer, monsoon and winter seasons at 6,12,18 and 24 hrs. Phytoplankton biomass shewed summer peak at 6 hrs (330u I^{-1) with the dominance of Myxophyceae. Monsoon (180u/l) and winter (410u I-1) peaks for phytoplankton were at 12 hrs and 18 hrs, respectively with the dominance of Chlorophyceae. Seasonally, phytoplankton biomass was maximum during winter while the degree of variation was relatively higher during summer. Diurnal variation of zooplankton had indicated summer peak at 6 hrs (50u I-1), monsoon (170u I-1) and winter (80u I-1) peaks at 24 hrs. Among zooplankton, crustaceans were found to be more sensitive towards environmental changes as compared to rotifers. Rotifers were observed in the surface water regardless of the illumination while crustaceans were adapted to low light intensity, however their abundance varied accordingly. The study points out that light and temperature may be regulating the biotic fluxes in the environment. Observation of morning and evening abundance of phytoplankton evidenced that the change of illumination in either direction constituted the effective stimulus to upward movement of the plankton. Continuous presence of some taxa viz. Phormidium of Myxophyceae, Pediastrum and Tribonema of Chlorophyceae, Synedra and Navicula of Bacillariophyceae and Brachionus of Rotifera at 6, 12, 18 & 24 hrs, revealed their resistance towards changing environmental fluxes of the wetland.}

The genetic polymorphism and gene flow rate among the Indian snow trout fish population S.richadsonii from three different locations viz., Chirapani stream of Champawat district, Kosi and Gola river of Nainital district, Uttarakhand State, India were assessed by employing twenty numbers of Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. The overall percent polymorphisms among these three populations were 14.76 with 6.56, 4.92 and 3.28 in Chirapani, Kosi and Gola river population, respectively. Chirapani population had higher proportion of polymorphic loci as compared to the Kosi and Gola. The higher value of genetic distance (0.1565) was obtained between Chirapani and Gola population and the lower value of genetic distance was observed between Chirapani and Kosi (0.1058) river population. The cluster analysis revealed that in the formation of two clusters, one consisted of Chirapani and Kosi and the other was Gola fish population. Gst estimates among these populations showed some extent of homogeneity with lower genetic differentiation rate between populations and further suggested that higher tolerance to mutation, as expected that RAPD bands, arose from both coding and non-coding DNA regions. The findings revealed that the rate of gene flow in three populations seemed very low i.e. highly conserved its genetic diversity in their natural waterbodies and indicative of little migration among populations (geographically isolated and not the possibilities man made interventions/ introduction of similar kind of fish species). It is further concluded that the Chirapani, Kosi and Gola river populations of S.richardsonii were being conserved naturally in their habitat and the species actual genetic potential were being maintained (adaptation to local climatic conditions, reproduction, production traits and disease resistance trait etc) in their natural habitat.

Various parameters of bottom sediment such as pH, EC, available phosphate, available nitrogen, organic carbon, free calcium carbonate and soil texture were found to be grossly near interrelated. The pH of three seasonal ponds always remained neutral. On the basis of soil texture, the sediments of Jharjhani and Tamlao ponds could be placed under 'loamy sand' whereas Deeppura pond sediment has been designated as 'loam'. Study of various Physico-chemical factors indicated that these seasonal ponds are suitable for pisciculture and particularly for rearing of fish seed. However, proper awareness about culture technology should be made available to the villagers for full utilization of available aquatic resources.

Studies were carried out on length, weight and biochemistry of air bladder of the fish Puntius filamentosus during 2010 and 2012. P. filamentosus were collected from Vellayani Lake during post monsoon. The length and weight of fish as well its air bladder were measured immediately. The protein, carbohydrate and cholesterol were estimated. The protein, carbohydrate and cholesterol content showed an increase as the weight and length of fish increases. Protein showed a decline in the fishes having length of 11.4-14.5 cm and in fishes having weight 13.2-44.3 g. There is a sharp increase of carbohydrate and cholesterol with the length of 14.5 cm and weight 44.3 g.

This study was conducted to investigate the fish production practices in Tripura emphasising, input use and fanner's perception. An expost facto research design was employed to collect data from 200 respondents randomly sampled from 10 villages. Instruments used for data collection included semi structured interview schedule, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), researchers' observations and secondary information. Descriptive statistics was used to report findings and to draw conclusions. The results showed that farmers adopted fish farming in order to obtain fish for household consumption and sale. The average fish yield was 1738 kg/ha. Fish culture contributed more than half of the total earning to 46% of the farmers. Majority of the fish farmers (20%) practiced the 5 species ratio of Rohu+Catla+Mrigal+Common Carp+ Silver Carp on the average ratio of 26.72 : 23.45 : 14.28 : 18.45 : 17.1. Yield was the most important criteria (96%) followed by availability of seed (85%) for species preference. Along with this, the extent of different inputs in fish production practices were also analysed. This finding suggested that farmer's objectives and priority to be taken into account before introduction of technology and efforts should be directed towards realizing the objectives.

Microcystis aeruginosa is generally dominant in many Mexican freshwater ecosystems interacting with zooplankton species. Hence, feeding and filtration rates were quantified for three cladoceran (Daphnia pulex, Moina micrura and Ceriodaphnia dubia) and three rotifer species (Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus rubens and Plationus patulus) using sonicated M. aeruginosa alone or mixed with Scenedesmus acutus in different proportions (25, 50 and 75%, based on cell density), offering a combined initial density of 100,000 cells ml^{-1. All the three cladoceran species ingested M. aeruginosa (100-300 cells ind-1 min-1) when fed exclusively with cyanobacterium. When green alga offered as exclusive diet, the number of cells ingested by the tested cladocerans varied from 80 to 400 cells ind-1 min-1. Compared to cladocerans, rotifers in general consumed much lower quantity (< 200 cells ind-1 min-1) of M. aeruginosa and S. acutus. The filtration rate for Daphnia pulex was inversely related to the proportion of green alga in the diet. For other tested cladocerans, no such clear trend was evident. In mixed treatments containing M. aeruginosa, the filtration rate of Daphnia was highest (about 220 ?l ind-1 min-1) when the medium contained 75% of S. acutus. Among the rotifer species, P. patulus filtered highest volume (100 ?l ind-1 min-1 from mixed diets containing higher proportions (50 or 75%) of M. aeruginosa. Thus, there were species-specific differences in the filtration and feeding rates of zooplankton when offered mixed diets of green algae and toxic cyanobacteria. These probably explain the coexistence of different zooplankton species in Microcystis-dominant waterbodies.}

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of phosphorus and various organic acids supplementation on growth, nutrient retention and loading in rainbow trout fed on low fishmeal based diets. Five experimental diets were formulated, Diet D1 (0.5P) was positive control with 0.5% inorganic phosphorus addition and D2 (0P, negative control) without addition of inorganic phosphorus. D3, D4 and D5 were supplemented with 1% fumaric (FuA), formic (FoA) and acetic (AA) acids, respectively. All the diets were fed until satiation to duplicate groups of 25 fish for12 weeks. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was recorded best with FoA diet and absorption of phosphorus was significantly higher (P<0.05) in all the diets supplemented with organic acids and was similar to positive control. The phosphorus and nitrogen retention with FoA diet was significantly high (P<0.05) as compared to 0P diet, in turn reducing their excretion. Hence, the present study demonstrated that, without additional phosphorus in the low fish meal-based diets, FoA supplement improved growth performance, absorption and retention of phosphorus and nitrogen and reducing excretion; thus it can be better incorporated to develop environment-friendly feed for rainbow trout.

Altitudinal variation in fish abundance was investigated in the spring-fed streams of the mid and lower mountain areas and Doon Valley of Uttarakhand. In the 'upper reaches' of mid-mountain area (1400-850m asl), Shizothorax richardsonii was dominant at 1370m and Shizothorax plagiostomus at 850 m asl. In the 'lower reaches' of mid-mountain area (1600-700 m asl) Neolissochilus chelynoides and Barilius bendelisis prevailed in equal proportions at 1800 m while Schistura rupecola was abundant at 1600 m asl. B. bendelisis was dominant in the 700-800 m range. In the 'upper reaches' of lower-mountain area and terai (1000-300 m asl) S. richardsonii was dominant at 1000 m asl while B. bendelisis from 1100-1000 m. In the 'lower reaches' of lower-mountain area Tor putitora was abundant around 500 m asl in very selective streams and Gara gotyla at 355 m. Channa punctatus and Tor tor dominated at 245 m in the Sharda. In the Doon Valley Barilius vagra and Puntius conchonius were abundant only in some streams of the Doon Valley from 600 to 300 m asl. B. bendelisis was largely abundant in most of the streams of the Boon valley and predominant in some; the Song at Chhidderwala (43%), Shyampur Khadri (51%), Burhi Tons at both Guchupani (49%) and Tapkeshwar (74%) and in the Asan at Bharmawala (72%). Longitudinal variation in faunal abundance was also observed in the Gomti, Kosi and Boon valley streams; the Song (B. vagra at Doiwala, while Puntius conchonius and B. bendelisis downstream at Chhidderwala) and the Asan (P. ticto and B. bendelisis) However, in the Burhi Tons no longitudinal variation occurred as B. bendelisis was abundant species at both Guchupani and Tapkeshwar.

Studies were conducted on olfactory learning and memory recall in the drones of Apis cerana and Apis florea through olfactory conditioning. The results showed that, the drones of A. cerana and A. florea learn and recall olfactory memory of queen mandibular odorants, the (2E)-9-oxodecenoic acid, (9-ODA), (2E)-10-hydroxydecenoic acid (10-HDA) and (2E)-9-hydroxydecenoic acid (9-HDA). Drones of A. cerana showed greater response towards 9-ODA in contrast to A. florea drones, towards 10-HDA. However, the drones of both species responded to 9-HDA but, A. florea drones in greater numbers. Results of the study conclude that, 9-ODA is a major sex pheromone component in A. cerana in contrast to 10-HDA in A. florea queens.

The Zebra danio, Brachydanio rerio (Hamilton) is one of the most popular Indian ornamental fish both locally and globally. Length-weight relationship of B. rerio indicating negative allometric growth in male, positive allometric growth in female, isometric growth in combined sex and found to be significantly different at 1% level. The fish does not follow the cube law strictly. Maximum number of fishes were found distributed in 26 to 30 mm size group (33.52%) followed by 21 to 25 mm size group (23.98%). In natural condition the fish feed predominantly on phytoplankton (98%) the rest was zooplankton (2%). Bacillariophyceae was the most abundant group with an average of 50%. Minimum number of ova produced was 215 (29mm; 0.20g) and maximum ova was 2836 (49 mm; 1.81 g). Sex ratio in nature was 1female:1.77male. 5+ months old of males and 6+ months old of females were attained the first maturity. Successful spawning was recorded in captive condition. 288-300eggs are found per spawning per female. The Gonado-Somatic Index for the gravid females during breeding period ranged 8.06 - 28.95 with an average 16.14. The fertilized eggs measuring 0.8-1.3 mm in diameter were demersal, non adhesive, almost spherical in shape, optically transparent and unpigmented. The embryos hatched within 40-42 hrs and measured 2.8±0.1 mm in total length.

The study on avifaunal diversity carried out for three years at the Krishna River Basin, Sangli District revealed a total of 126 species of birds belonging to 30 families, of which 91 species were resident, 16 migratory, 12 resident and local migratory and 7 species were resident and migratory. Among the migrant birds, Rosy Starling Sturnus roseus was dominant in the study area. Commonly recorded resident bird species were, Red vented bulbul, Jungle crow, House sparrow, Common myna, Brahminy myna, Rock pigeon, Spotted dove, Rose ringed parakeet, Indian robin, White-browed fantail-flycatcher and Small sunbird. Most of the families had one or two species, whereas Muscicapidae family alone had 16 species. Forty one species of waterfowls were recorded in this small landscape. Out of 126 bird species, 38 were insectivorous, 28 piscivorous, 25 omnivorous, 19 carnivorous, 9 granivorous, 5 frugivorous and 2 species were nectar sucker and insectivorous. These results suggest that richness of avifauna in the Krishna River Basin, Western Maharashtra might be due to large aquatic ground, varied vegetations and favourable environmental conditions.

Only two species are of estuarine origin and usually found entering paddy fields. Information on all 36 species belonging to 28 genera and 18 families are provided here with local names.

The enzymatic activity of succinic dehydrogenase was found to be depleted significantly (P <60> 0.01) at both acute and chronic exposures in the blood of Colisa fasciatus intoxicated with metanil yellow and bismark brown. The decrease was quite prominent following its chronic exposure (T4) of metanil yellow and bismark brown.

A new species of sporozoan parasite, Lankesterella ranae n. sp. is described from the blood of Hoplobatrachus tigerinus (Syn. Ranatigrina) (prevalence 7.97; intensity 1.0-6.0/100 RBC's). The permanent preparations of the parasites were cyto-morpho-taxonomically compared with the previously described forms. The characteristic slender extracorpuscular and intracorpuscular cresent shape of the parasite, band-shaped reticular nucleus post-centrally placed, absence of vacuoles and its morphometric measurements not conforming to the earlier reported species are regarded as novel specific characters of the parasite and it is thus being reported as a new species. Manifestation of hypertrophy is reported.

The wide use of pyrethroids possesses an inevitable damage to non-targeted organisms/species. Fenvalerate is one such insecticide, whose increased usage can be indirectly harmful to wildlife. In this study effort has been made to detect chromosomal aberrations and single cell DNA strand break (comet assay), on blue rock pigeon (Columba livia) induced by fenvalerate. Sublethal doses of fenvalerate for acute (1 and 2 day) and chronic (15, 30 and 60 days) exposures were given orally. Bone marrow was collected from femur of blue rock pigeon and DNA damage was studied. Significant damage was observed when compared to control birds, which were treated with groundnut oil only. The present study shows genotoxic effect of fenvalerate on non-targeted organisms.
