Facile and sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of profenofos in its formulations and environmental samples. The method was based on the coupling reaction of hydrolysed product of profenofos with diazotized reagents namely 4-aminoantipyrine, 4-aminobenzaldehyde and 4-methoxyaniline in basic medium to give the color derivatives having the absorption maximum at 410, 510 and 483 nm respectively. The stability of color derivatives ranges from 16-36 h. Beer's law was obeyed in the profenofos concentration range of 0.2 - 12.0 μg ml^-1. The proposed method has been successlilly applicable to the determination of profenofos in its formulations, tap and distilled water, grains, and soil samples.

The reaction of 2-formylpyridine scmicarbazone (HFPS), 2-formylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (HFPTS), 2-acetylpyridine semicarbazone (HAPS) and 2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (HAPTS) with VOSO₄ in ethanolic solution affords the complexes of formula VOL₂, where L = FPS, APS, FPTS and APTS. The infrared spectra of complexes in comparison to that of the free ligand show the mode of coordination of the ligands. The appearance of three bands in their electronic spectra is indicative of their square pyramidal geometry which is further substantiated by their electron spin resonance spectra. The presence of eight lines in the hyperfine ESR spectra shows that they are mononuclear complexes.

One pot condensation of ethyl acetoacetate or methyl acetoacetate with various para and ortho substituted aromatic aldehydes and urea or thiourea by tin(IV) chloride affords twenty-one different substituted 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones. Tin(IV) chloride has emerged as a powerful catalyst for the preparation of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones under simple and mild conditions. It is compatible with a wide variety of substituents in the aromatic aldehyde. Substituents at para position in aldehyde are more effective than the substituents at ortho position. Both the p-ketoesters, and urea or thiourea are equally effective towards an efficient 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-one synthesis.

Kinetic investigation on uncatalysed and iridium trichloride catalysed oxidation of dextrose by alkaline solution of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) have been carried out in the temperature range 25-45 °C. The reaction has been found to be first order with respect to each of oxidant and substrate in both uncatalysed and catalysed reaction. The reaction follows a first order dependence on OH" ion concentration. A first order dependence on [catalyst] is also observed. Negligible effect of chloride ion on its higher concentration has been observed. Addition of succinimide shows a negative effect. The increase in ionic strength of the medium increases the rate of reaction. A 1 : 1 stoichio-metry is observed in the oxidation. Effect of temperature on the rate of oxidation has been studied to show the validity of Arrhenius equation and various activation parameters have been computed.

Vanadium(v) in trace amounts forms an intense green 1 : 3 (M : L) complex with 3-hydroxy-2-[l'-phenyl-3'-(p-chlorophenyl)-4'-pyrazolyl]-4-oxo-4H-l-be nzopyran (HPCPB) in acetic acid medium (0.1 M) which is extractable into carbon tetrachloride and is stable for more than 3 h. Beer's law is obeyed in the vanadium concentration range of 0-1.4 mg mL^-1. Molar absorptivity, detection limit and Sandell's sensitivity when applying spectrophotometric determination at the wavelength of 410 nm, are 2.2 x 10⁴ L mol^-1 cm^-1, 5.48 x 10^-5 g L^-1 and 0.0023 mg V cm^-2, respectively. The correlation coefficient being r = 1.0001. Ascorbic acid, dithionite, oxalate, EDTA and hydrogen peroxide interfere seriously in the determination. The method handles satisfactorily the analysis of various samples of varying complexity.

The compounds 2(a-o) were synthesized from 5-(substituted phenyl)-2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1(a-c) with various aromatic aldehydes which itself was prepared from substituted aromatic acid(s) using thiosemicarbazide. The compounds 3(a-o) on treatment with various aromatic aldehydes afforded [5-(substituted arylidenes)-2-(substituted aryl)-3-{5-(substituted phenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol}]-4-oxo-thiazolidines, 4(a-o). The structures of all the synthesized compounds have been determined by spectral and chemical methods. The compounds 2, 3 and 4 were screened for their antifungal and antibacterial activities against E. coli, S. typhimurium and B. subtilis bacteria and R. oryzae, C. albicans and A. niger fungi and diuretic activity on adult male rats.

The Schiff base behaves as tridentate ONO donor ligand and forms the complexes of the type ML stoichiometry for Zn^II, Cd^II and Hg^II complexes and ML₂ (metal-ligand) stoichiometry for Co^II, Ni^II and Cu^II, complexes and are non-electrolytic in nature. It is found that Zn^II, Cd^II and Hg^II complexes exhibited tetrahedral geometry whereas Co^II, Ni^II, Cu^II, complexes exhibited octahedral geometry. The ligand and its complexes were tested for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphyloccocus aureus and antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans.

Kinetics of oxidation of mephenesin and guaifenesin by sodium N-chlorobenzenesulfonamide (CAB) have been investigated in HCl medium at 303 K. The oxidation behaviour is similar for both the substrates. The rate shows a first order dependence on both [CAB]_o and [HCl], and is fractional in [substrate]_o- The orders individually in [H^{+] and [Cl-] are fractional. The variation of ionic strength and addition of the reduction product, benzenesulfonamide, has no significant effect on the reaction rate. The solvent isotope effect has been studied using D₂O, and the oxidation products have been identified. Composite activation parameters for the reaction have been determined from Arrhenius plots. Michaelis-Menten type of kinetics is observed and activation parameters for the rate limiting steps have also been computed. The proposed mechanism assumes the simultaneous catalysis by H+ and Cl- ions. The reaction is found to be moderately faster in guaifenesin in comparison with mephenesin, which may be attributed to the involvement of methoxy and methyl groups of the substrate. The observed results have been explained by a plausible mechanism and the related rate law has been proposed.}

These complexes have been characterized by IR, electronic spectroscopy and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. They exhibit less intense molecular ion [Cr(acac)₂L⁺] peaks, however, very strong peak due to the fragment Cr(acac)⁺ is observed. Peaks due to other fragments e.g. Cr(acac)₂⁺, CrL₂⁺, Cr(acac)L⁺ are also observed. Oligomeric species such as Cr₂(acac)₃⁺, Cr₂(acac)⁺₄ are also formed.

The cyclic voltammetric behaviour of copper(II) complexes with various imidazoles, viz. imidazole (ImH), 2-methylimidazole (2-Melm), 1,2-dimethylimidazole (l,2-Me₂Im) and benzimidazole (BzIm) has been investigated in dimethylformamide (DMF) containing 0.1 M tetrabutyl ammonium perchlorate (TBAP) as a supporting electrolyte at a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). All these copper(II) complexes revealed a diffusion-controlled quasi-reversible one-electron transfer process (Cu^2+/+). It has been observed that the reduction peak potential becomes less positive (difficult reduction) with increasing concentration of a given ligand. The observed reduction potentials of these complexes become more positive in the order : Im → 2-Melm → l,2-Me₂Im → BzIm. The deviation of reduction potentials from the expected trend based on pK_a values of the ligands is attributed to the dominance of steric effects over the electronic effects (i.e. inductive effects) in the case of 2-MeIm and 1,2-Me₂Im ligands.

The IR spectra suggest bonding between the Ni^II or Cu^II metal chelate and alkali metal which appear by dative bond via oxygen atoms of C-O (phenolic). Low value of molar conductance would suggest them to be non-electrolyte. These complexes are biologically active against bacteria viz. E. coli and S. aureus and fungus viz. C. albicans and so these may be treated as good antibacterial agents and fungicides. It was therefore, though interesting to synthesize the title compounds and examine their antimicrobial activity.

The kinetics of oxidation of thiosulphate by hexacyano-ferrate(III) in an aqueous perchloric acid medium has been studied spectrophotometrically by stopped flow method at 25°C. The stoichiometry is 1:1, i. e., one mole of thiosulphate consumes one mole of hexacyanoferrate(III). The reaction products are identified as Fe(CN)₆^2- and S₄O)₆^2-. The reaction is first order with respect to hexacyanoferrate(III) and thiosulphate concentrations. Increase in perchloric acid concentration increases the rate of reaction (order=0.40). Added products do not have any significant effect on the rate of reaction. The effect of ionic strength and dielectric constants on the reaction rate has also been studied. The active species of oxidant is indicated to be HFe(CN) )₆^3-. A suitable mechanism is proposed and the reaction constants of the different steps involved have been evaluated. Activation parameters have also been calculated with respect to the slow step of the mechanism.

The results shows that the mixed melt have the latent ability to exhibit mesomorphism. This latent transitions temperatures of nonliquid crystal substances are determined by the extrapolation method. The transition temperatures of the binary systems as well as the constituent components were observed through hot stage polarising microscope. LTTs determined are mutually comparable and well compared with others.

The nematic mesophase appeared as threaded type of texture. The first five and sixteenth homologues are nonmesomorphic. Mesomorphic property commences from the sixth member of the series as nematic type without exhibition of any smetic property. Transition temperatures are observed through hot stage polarizing microscope. Analytical data supports the structure.

The thermal stability of the complexes was studied using thermogravimetry and the decomposition schemes of the complexes were given. The mechanism of the decomposition has been established from TG data. The kinetic parameters i.e. n (order of reaction), E (energy of activation), Z (pre-exponential factor), AS (entropy change) and ΔG (free energy change) were calculated from the TG curve using mechanistic (Sestak-Berggren and Satava) and non-mechanistic (Coats-Redfern, MacCallum-Tanner and Horowitz-Metzger) integral equations.

Stability constants (log β) of ternary complex of Mn^II with sulfadiazine, sulfisoxazole, sulfamethaxyzole, sul-famethazine, sulfathiazole, sulfacetamide and sulfanilamide as primary ligands and cephazolin as secondary ligands were reported at pH = 7.30 ± 0.01 at μ = 1.0 M NaClO₄ at 25 °C by polarographic technique. The kinetic parameters like transfer coefficient (a), degree of irreversibility (λ), diffusion coefficient (D) and rate constant (k), were determined. The rate constants (k) that varied from 3.61 cm s^-1 to 9.93 cm s^-1 confirmed the quasi-reversible nature of electrode processes. The study was carried out at 25 °C and 35 °C. Thermodynamic parameters such as entropy change (ΔS), enthalpy change (ΔH) and free energy change (ΔG) were determined. The values of stability constants (log β) that varied from 1.75 to 9.13 showed these drugs or their complexes might be effective against Mn toxicity.

The products 5a-l were characterized by microestimations for C, H, N, S and IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ¹⁹F NMR and mass spectral studies. The synthesized compounds were screened for antimicrobial activity against the bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the fungus, Candida albicans. All the compounds showed moderate activity against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with reference to standard drugs, gatifloxin and natilmicin but showed good activity against the fungus, Candida albicans with reference drug fluconazole. The maximum antifungal activity has been shown by the compound 5k having maximum number of methoxyl groups and 5g and 5a having fluoro in addition to methoxyl groups.

Crystals of CuSO₄.5H₂O, CoCl₂.6H₂O, and MnCl₂.4H₂O doped with CeCl₃ under sonicated and unsonicated conditions have been synthesized. The crystals synthesized under sonicated conditions are different than those synthesized under unsonicated conditions with respect to shape, size, and color. The crystal composition has been estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with graphite furnace and UV-visible spectrophotometer. Higher percentage of Cu(II), Mn(II) and Ce(III) in the crystals synthesized under sonication as compared to the unsonicated crystals may be attributed to the change in the composition of the lattice pattern due to the mechanical impact of ultrasound, whereas such an effect has not been found in the Co(II) salts. Enhanced sonophotocatalytic effect of these crystals on the degradation of phenol under sonic conditions is attributed to the increased number of unpaired electron following free radical mechanism.

Charge-transfer (CT) complexes of ofloxacin, chloropheniramine, azacyclonol and indapamide drugs with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) were investigated spectrophotometrically in different organic solvents at different temperatures. The spectral characteristics and formation constants of the formed 1 : 1 CT-complexes were examined and discussed in terms of the solvent properties. The oscillator and transition dipole strengths of the complexes have been determined from the CT absorption spectra. The ΔH°, ΔS° and ΔG° values are all negative, indicating stability and exothermic character of the complexes. The ionization potential value of the donors calculated using spectral data are in good agreement with those computed using molecular orbital package MOPAC (PM3) method. Infrared analysis of the CT-complexes have also been carried out.

Observed excess values in all the mixtures indicate dispersive type and dipole-induced-dipole interactions exist in the system.

Photochemical studies of dyes has contributed to the understanding of the mechanism of electron transfer reactions in photoelectro-chemical devices^1-6. A umber of photoinduced redox reactions have been studied. These reactions prove to he helpful in electrochemical cell for the conversion of solar energy to electrical energy by chemical means^7-9. It has been found that phenazyne dyes in conjunction with different reducing agents is efficient photosensitizers for probing charge transfer in photochemical cells^1-8. Studies carried out by Isabel et al.⁹. on the photo redox reactions of thionine with iron(II), cobalt(II) and manganese(II) by flash photolysis techniques provided better understanding of the mechanism of thionine based photogalvanic cell. A detailed literature survey^1-23 reveals that different photosensitizers mainly cationic and neutral dyes and reductants have been used in photogalvanic cells but the use of combination of anionic, cations and neutral dyes as photosensitizers in the photogalvanic cell for solar energy conversion and storage is rare, and hence the present work is undertaken. The system consisting of anionic dye safranine in aqueous solution generates photovoltage when studied in photogalvanic cell. The open circuit photovoltage, the short circuit current and solar energy efficiency of these systems have been determined. The effect of different parameters on electrical output of the cell were observed and a mechanism has also been proposed for the generation of photocurrent in photogalvanic cell.

Steam reforming of methanol was carried out using a commercially available nickel-alumina catalyst in a 12.7 mm (inner diameter) tubular packed bed reactor. The product stream consisting mainly of hydrogen may be used as an industrial feedstock for fertilizer industry as well as for use in fuel cells after separative purification. Experiments were conducted in the temperature range of 623-798 K and at atmospheric pressure. The ratio of weight of catalyst to molar flow rate of methanol (W/F_cH30H) was varied between 98.27 to 475 gm-cat hr/(mol of methanol) and the steam-to-methanol molar feed ratio was varied from 3: 1 to 5: 1. Effects of variation of reaction temperature, steam-to-methanol molar feed ratio on the conversion, selectivity, and yield were evaluated. The results were correlated in the form of a power law model. For methanol, the minimum conversion obtained was around 40% (350°C, W/F =98 gm-cat hr/mol) and the maximum conversion was around 60% (525°C, WIF = 475 gm-cat hr/mol). It was observed that with increase in both temperature and W/F, the conversion of methanol increased.

Quantitative extraction of Cd^II has been achieved from acetate buffer at the pH range 6.5-7.5. The effects of pH, stripping agents, flow-rate, on extraction and elution have been investigated. Exchange capacity of the prepared exchanger at different temperatures with respect to Cd^II has been determined. Cd^II has been separated from synthetic binary and multi-component mixtures containing various elements by exploiting the differences in pH for extraction and elution. The method effectively permits sequential separation of Cd^II from synthetic mixture containing its congeners Cu^II, Hg^II, Zn^II and Pb^II of same analytical group.

The latent ability to exhibit mesophase transition temperatures of a substance is determined for non-mesomorphic components of the binary systems, viz. Schiff's bases (B₁, B₂, B₃) by mixing them with a monotropic nematic component (A) as a common component. Components of the binary systems were prepared by established methods of preparation. The transition temperature of pure components and binary mixtures were observed through hot stage polarizing microscope. The phase diagrams are drawn for transition temperatures versus mole% of component (A). Analytical data support the structure of the molecules. The latent transition temperature of each non liquid crystal component is determined by the extrapolation of nematic-isotropic (or vice versa) transition curve to zero mole% of (A). The values of latent transition temperatures (LTTs) for different Schiff's bases are determined Thus, reliability of extrapolation method is raised and credibility to the conclusions already drawn earlier is supported by present investigation.

All mesomorphic homologues are enantiotropic nematic. Thus, present homologous series is purely nematogenic. The usual odd-even effect is observed in nematic-isotropic transition curve. Transition curve behaves in a normal manner. The average thermal stability and mesomorphic characteristics are compared with structurally similar homologous series. Series is of middle ordered melting type without display of smectic character even in the last member of the series.

The formation constants of the complexes were evaluated. The relative stabilities of the ternary complexes were expressed in tenns of the parameter Δlog K and various factors influencing the formation and stability of complexes are discussed. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) associated with the ternary systems were also evaluated by determining the formation constants at 20, 30 and 40 °C and 0.1 M KNO₃ ionic strength. All the parameters were found to be favourable for the complexation.

A series of mesoporous ceria (m-CeO₂) have been synthesized using Brij 35 and some co-surfactants as template agents. The samples have been characterized by XRD, FT-IR and N₂ adsorption-desorption analyses. The mesoporous material prepared with CTAB and Brij 35 shows the best catalytic performance in comparison to material prepared using Brij 35 alone or along with other co-surfactants like PEG2000. The Ru/m-CeO₂ catalyst shows the highest activity for the conversion of methanol. The results also indicate that the synthesis temperature, ageing temperature and calcination temperature affect the surface area, pore volume, thermal resistance and the pore diameter of the prepared materials. Also, temperature plays an important role in the preparation of mesoporous ceria.

A new scries of 3-(4,6-disubstituted-2-thiomethylpyrimidyl)-4-amino-5-mcrcapto-1,2-4-t ria/oles have been synthesized. These triazoles on reaction with aldehydes in the presence of acid catalyst forms Schiff's bases. These Schiff's bases can exist both in the thiol as well as in the thione tautomeric form. However when these compounds are subjected to Mannich reaction, N-Mannich bases are obtained rather than the S-Mannich bases. The structures of the new compounds have been confirmed by spectral and analytical data. Few of these Mannich bases have been evaluated for their possible antifungal and antibacterial activity. Most of the tested compounds show significant antifungal and antibacterial activity.

The Cr^VI-xanthate complexes produce a catalytic hydrogen wave at -1.52 V vs SCE with potassium propyl xanthate (Kpxan) and at -1.47 V vs SCE with potassium cyclohexyl xanthate (Kchxan) in NH₄Cl-NH₄OH medium (pH 9.6 for Kpxan and 9.2 for Kchxan). The peak height is proportional to metal ion concentration. The proposed method is free of interference from other metal ions except Mo^{VI and is evaluated to micro level CrVI down to 0.1 ppm by the determination of chromium content in drinking water samples, industrial effluents, tannery waste water and agricultural materials.}

(N-Phenothiazinomethyl)-4-[N-(3-chloro-2-oxo-4-substituted-azetidin)]- 5-mercapto-l,2,4-triazoles (2a-s) have been synthesised by cycloaddition of (N-phenothiazinomcthyl)-4-(arylideneamino)-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazoles (1a-s) with chloro ketene generated in situ from chloroacetyl chloride and triethylamine. All the products have been evaluated in vitro for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against some selected microbes and in vivo for their antiinflammatory activity by rat paw oedema method.

An environmentally benign approach for the synthesis of 2-aryl-3H-quinazolin-4-ones employing sodium perborate (SPB) as catalyst is described. SPB in water and acetone system is proved as selective catalyst of hydration for cyanides. The rate enhancement and high yield is attributed to the coupling of suitable catalyst with the solvent system. The key step is the microwave prompted reaction sequence combining 2-aminobenzonitrile and aromatic/heteroaromatic aldehydes providing efficient access to intermediate for the synthesis of this important class of nitrogen fused heterocycle.

Two dimeric C₃₀ quinones-tabebuin and tecomaquinone-III have been isolated from the heartwood of Tabebuia rosea in addition to the previously reported 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives. Both the dimeric quinones are reported for the first time from this plant.
