The porous medium is bounded by a vertical plane surface of constant temperature. The surface absorbs the dusty fluid with constant velocity and the free stream velocity of the fluid vibrates about a mean constant value. Analytical expressions for the velocity of the fluid and dust are given. The effects of Grashof number and permeability parameter upon the velocity field are also shown in a graphic representation. The velocity profiles decrease with either an increase in the mass concentration of the dust particles (or) increase of frequency parameter (or) increase of permeability parameter (or) increase of Grashof number.

The normal mode analysis is used to obtain the expressions for temperature, displacements and stresses for two different cases : (i) time dependent heat-punch across the surface of semi-infinite thermoelastic half space and (ii) a plate subjected to time dependent heat source on both sides. Numerical computations of temperature and stress for both the cases have been made and presented graphically. Comparisons are made with the results obtained in the case of temperature independent modulus of elasticity.

The velocity field inside the boundary layer is approximated by a simple polynomial function and the functional of the variational principle is formulated. The hydrodynamical boundary layer thickness is derived as the Euler-Lagrange equation of the variational principle. The hydrodynamical boundary layer thickness and the skin friction values were computed and the present solution is compared with the known available solution and the accuracy of the comparison is remarkable.

Among the numerous techniques available for solution of wave equation, the method of finite differences is particularly versatile. The two-dimensional partial differential equations of motion describing the propagation of stress waves in an elastic medium are approximated by suitable finite difference equations, which can be solved on a discrete spatial grid by strictly numerical procedures. Since the finite difference approach is based on the elastic wave equation without physical approximations, the method accounts not only for direct waves, primary reflected waves, and multiply reflected waves, but also for surface waves, head waves, converted reflected waves, diffracted waves, and critically refracted waves. Though already extensive, the literature in the finite difference modeling of the wave equation has thus far not addressed itself in detail to the computation of synthetic seismograms of exploration interest. The contribution indicates what can be accomplished in this regard.

The solution of inverse transient problem of quasi-static thermal stresses in an annular fin with outer edges subjected to the heat flux as zero: has been discussed. The discussion also covers the determination of dimensionless temperature function, dimensionless unknown temperature gradient, dimensionless radial and tangential stresses in thin annular fin; and results are obtained in terms of Bessel's function by using integral transform technique. Calculations are made using Mathcad and are illustrated numerically.

Initial investigation of the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid value has been made in rotating channel bounded above by a rigid plane and below by the pdrous bed abutting the impermeable boundary plane. The flow in the non-porous region is governed Navaier-Stokes equations while the Brinkman model is used in the porous bed. The perturbations in the flow are created by the constant pressure gradient along in the plate in addition to non-torsional oscillations of the lower plate. Initial valve problem has been solved making use of transform techniques and exact solution of velocity in the clean fluid and the porous region are evaluated. The velocity field consists of steady state, quasi steady state and the transient components. The time required for the decay of the transient term is discussed and the ultimate quasi steady state solution is analyzed with focus on its physical nature. The stresses on the boundary planes have also been evaluated. The behavior of the velocity and the stress with reference to variations in the governing parameters namely E, the Ekman number, D, the Darcy parameter and h, the non dimensional thickness of bed has been computationally discussed.

A new method is proposed to solve least squares problem of Ax ≈ b in the presence of Gaussian uncertainty in the right hand side and unknown but bounded parametric uncertainty in the regression matrix. It is shown how Linear Fractional Transformation (LFT) can be used to model the mixed uncertainty case in a unified manner. Having obtained the problem in LFT form it can easily be cast into a Robust Semidefinite Programming problem (RSDP). The solution of RSDP problem provides confidence bounds on the unknowns. The centre of the confidence bounds could be interpreted as the point estimates. For the purpose of illustrating the ideas the method is applied to an engineering problem and the simulation results are reported.

Decision trees are one of the widely used techniques for classification and prediction. A number of popular classifiers construct decision trees to generate classification models. A decision tree is constructed based on a training set of pre-classified data. Each internal node of the decision tree specifies a test of an attribute of the instance and each branch descending of that node corresponds to one of the possible values for this attribute. In this paper, we develop an algorithm for building decision trees in an uncertain environment. Our algorithm will use the rough set theory. The adaptation concerns both the construction of the tree and its use to classify new objects characterized by uncertain attribute values.

In many practical situations, demand, supply, and various inventory costs are vague and uncertain. In such cases, it is very difficult to determine size of order and lead time. Fuzzy expert systems considerably solve this problem and also it is useful to make optimum decisions in inventory control. In this paper, a fuzzy inventory problem with imprecise demand and imprecise inventory costs are considered. A fuzzy expert system is developed to maintain fuzzy inventory control problem. This paper deals single item inventory problems for both fixed order quantity systems and periodic review systems.
