The programme of solar cookers has met with a limited success. The initiatives have largely been in from of the national level rural and renewable energy programmes. Dissemination of this technology option in India needs to be investigated. Techno-economic, socio-cultural and commercial assessment of the solar cookers identified through a survey is presented to understand the existing dissemination framework. An integrated approach of total usefulness as primary consideration with technical soundness, economic viability, social acceptability, behavioral compatibility and commercial utility as secondary considerations for total usefulness is presented. The study highlights awareness, product features, sales and support network as major barriers to dissemination.
