The development of aluminised plastic-bonded explosive (PBXs) based on aluminium and nitramine explosive using hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene as polymer matrix. The PBXs were processed as per standard procedures. Compositions with different formulations were prepared by varying the percentage of aluminium and RDX and their explosive properties, including velocity of detonation (VOD), peak overpressure, duration, impulse and sensitivity of different types of stimuli, were studied. The experimental and theoretical values of the VOD have been compared. It is observed that about 15 per cent aluminium content in the aluminised PBXs shows the optimum VOD.

Quantitative risk assessment for the storage of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄). It is the major reactant used for the production of titanium in the titanium sponge plant. Titanium tetrachloride readily reacts with moisture, leading to the release of toxic hydrogen chloride (HCl). Fire explosive and toxicity index analysis, and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies for the entire titanium sponge plant were carried out. Based on these studies, the TiCl₄ storage section was found to be one of the most hazardous sections in the titanium sponge plant. Fault tree analysis technique has been used ot identify the basic events responsible for the top event occurrence, ie, release of HCl due to the hydrolysis of TiCl₄ upon contact with moisture in the encironment during spillage/leakage of TiCl₄ from the storage tanks and to calculate its probability. Consequence analysis of the probable scenarios has been carried out. The risk has been estimated in terms of fatality and injuries. Based on these results, basic input in the form of recommendations for possible changes in the design and operation of the titanium sponge plant have been made for the risk management.

Keeping in view the emerging trends in the use of ceramics in engineering applications and the need to join ceramics/metals, a study has been taken up on the active metal brazing of Al₂O₃ to SS 304, Ti stabilized SS, commercial pure Ti, Type 430 SS & Inconel 718. The brazing alloys employed are in-house developed. Interaction of the active elements (Ti/Hf) with the ceramics appeared to be the key mechanism of joining and this is found to be dictated by the metal member in the joint.

The possibility of overcoming the problem of hygroscopicity of ammonium nitrate by coating the particles with selected waterproofing materials. Gravimetric analysis of the samples of ammonium nitrate coated with eight different waterproofing materials, vis-a-vis, uncoated ammonium nitrate, were conducted at different relative humidity and exposure time. The results indicate that mineral jelly is the promising waterproofing material for ammonium nitrate among the materials tested, viz, calcium stearate, dioctyl phthalate, kaoline, diethyl phthalate, dinitrotoluene, shelac varnish, and beeswax. Attempts were made to confirm the waterproofing ability of mineral jelly t ammonium nitrate using differential thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction patterns as an experimental tool. Suitability of mineral jelly as an additive for the gun propellant was also assessed on the basis of theoretical calculations using THERM program.
