Symptom severity and the time of appearance of bottle gourd mosaic diseases in bottle gourd plants was delayed, if the aqueous root extract of Boerhaavia diffusa was sprayed weekly on to the leaves of bottle gourd plants since seedling stage. The incidence of bottle gourd mosaic disease was gradually reduced as the number of sprays with B. diffusa were increased. The maximum protection was observed in plants which received six sprays followed by five and four sprays. Three and less sprays were not found much effective. Plants treated with B. diffusa performed superior over controls regarding all the growth parameters like length of vine, number of primary and secondary branches, flowering and fruit yields. Active virus titre assayed from plants, treated with B. diffusa and subsequently infected with bottle gourd mosaic virus, revealed that high virus contents were present in control plants while a gradual reduction was observed in treated plants.

Preferences of local communities on the importance of various groups of ethnobotanical species were examined in the Indian Himalayan State of Uttarakhand in order to select key species for development of the society and environmental conservation. The results indicated that the preferences of local people varied across different ethnobotanical groups of Species. A total 32 medicinal, 16 horticultural, 22 fodder and 20 timber-yielding plant species were selected as the most preferred by the local people of Uttarakhand. Twelve species of medicinal plants preferred by the local people were rare and endangered, and one was near-threatened. There were regional variations in the selection of preferred ethnobotanical species by the local people due to the availability of different and diverse floristic compositions around their settlements.

Nutritionally fastidious bacterial strains, TTS and JT 002, were enriched and isolated on reduced sulphur compounds as the sole energy and electron source along with several other mesophilic, neutrophilic and facultatively sulphur-chemolithotrophic proteobacteria from the rhizospheric soil of Clitoria ternatea, a slender leguminous herb found throughout the Lower Gangetic Plains of India. 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analyses showed that TTS and JT 002 belonged to the α-1 and γ-2 subclasses of 'Proteobacteria' with Azospirillum and Pseudoxanthomonas as the nearest genera respectively. The findings of the present study not only extend the phylogenetic spectrum of chemolithotrophic sulphur oxidation to these two genera hitherto unknown for sulphur-lithotrophic members but also describe distinctive lithotrophic properties. The new strain TTS exhibited more efficient utilization of, and conservation of energy from, tetra-thionate than other alphaproteobacteria in terms of molar growth yield.

An ethnomedicinal survey was undertaken to collect the information about medicinal plants in two villages (Utpalta and Kwarka) of chakrata Forest Division, Uttarakhand. Common plants with medicinal value were catalogued based on the collection during the field trips and the information was gathered through oral interviews conducted with local knowledgeable villagers of selected study area. The study revealed that a total of 29 plant species distributed in 28 genera belonging to 20 different families to treat various diseases. The documented medicinal plants were mostly used to cure various skin diseases, diabetes, dysentery, dropsy, leprosy etc. In this study the most dominant family was Rosaseae. The study showed that many people in the studied area still continue to depend on medicinal plants at least for the treatment of primary health care.

The major are: a-cubebene (21.3%), caryophyllene oxide (10.1), α-bisabolol (6.6), curcumene (6.3), β-pinene (4.1), copaene (4.1) and OC-cedrene (4.9). Flower oil contains forty one compounds, with major are β-pinene (14.9%), α-cubebene (12.4), curcumene (11.7), caryophyllene (8.5), α-bergamotene (5.6), β-caryophyllene (4.3) and zingiberene (6).

The peel oil contains limonene (92.7%) as an absolute major constituent among the seven compounds identified.

It flowers during the months of August, September and October. The flowers, borne on typical receme are yellow, hermaphrodite, actinomorphic, hypogynous and complete. They open daily during 0430-0530 h and offer both pollen and nectar as floral rewards. Foragers include honey bees, butterflies, flies and ants. Honey bees, butterflies and flies effect auto-, geditono and xenogamy. This species shows facultative xenogamy, but mostly eliminates growing fruits from self-pollinated flowers.

The efficacy of extracts of young and green leaves, mature and green leaves and old and dry leaves of ten wild plant species viz., Adhatoda vasica Nees., Artemisia scoparia Waidst & Kit, Asparagus racemosus (Wild) DC, Cannabis sativa Linn., Colebrookea oppositifolia Smith., Datura stramonium Linn., Lantana camara Linn., Rhus parviflora Roxb., Ricinus communis linn. and Vitex nigundo Linn. were studied against the germination of conidia of Erysiphe polygoni DC collected from Pisum sativum and Trigonella foenum-graecum. Inhibition of conidial germination was recorded in all the treatment solutions. Conidia collected from P. sativum showed minimum percentage of germination in extract of young green leaves of A. vasica. The minimum percentage of germination of conidia collected from T. foenum-graenum was recorded in the extract of young green leaves ofD. stramonium. Extract of old dry leaves of all the plant species showed least inhibitory effect on conidial germination.

Oxalis corniculata L. and Oxalis dehradunensis Raiz. both grow in wild in Melghat and are known locally as "Khatti Bhaji'. They have pleasant acid taste and are refreshing. Leaves are either eaten raw or cooked into vegetable as such or mixed with dal to prepare curry. Both the species have medicinal properties too. Wild edible plants not only supplement the food quantity but also make significant contribution to the nutrition throughout the year. However, very little has been done to evaluate the nutritional and nutraceutical status of these wild edibles. Present study deals with the nutritional and nutraceutical evaluation of Oxalis corniculata L. and Oxalis dehradunensis Raiz. Fresh as well as shade dried material was used for estimation of moisture content, chlorophyll, anthocyanine, lycopene, vitamin - C, vitamin - A, crude protein, crude fibres, lipids, fat, reducing and non-reducing sugar, total soluble sugars, starch, total nitrogen and phenols. Mineral content was estimated in terms of ash yield and further analysis was carried out for qualitative and quantitative estimation of different minerals. The material was also screened for presence of bioactive molecules of medicinal importance.

Virus infection brings about drastic changes in many physiological processes of the host cell. Altered enzyme activities are one of these changes which have been observed in a number of virus infected hosts. The study indicates that virus infection increases the peroxidase activity in comparison to their healthy counter parts. There was a general increase in peroxidase activity of healthy and infected leaf, stem and root samples, with an increase in the age of the plant. The highest increase was observed in leaf followed by stem and root samples of healthy and infected plants. The maximum increase is associated with BGMVB infection followed by BGMM and BGMC.

The was gathered from tribal peoples named as Phool Kumari, Pooja Chaudhary and Man kumari Chaudhary working as labour in the area, using an integrated approach of botanical collection, group discussion and interviews with questionnaire. Out of 50 collected plants, this herbaceous taxon locally called "Gandhella" by tribal people, is used in cure of some skin diseases such as cuts, leprosy, scabies and burn. The above gathered information was experimented on various people of District suffering from the aforesaid skin diseases, so as to confirm the aforesaid findings.

Two dominant riparian grasses, viz. Saccharum spontaneum L.,Cynodon dactyloriL. (Pers.) and one common riparian dicot weed, Cassia occidentalis were studied to find out their role in reducing water and soil run-off and nitrogen losses. Seedlings of the selected species were taken from the bank of Ganga River at Bharwari, Kaushambi, U.P. and were transplanted on the artificial as well as on the natural slopes at the study site. Artificial showers were applied to each of the three vegetated plots and one bare plot on the artificial slope and run-off data were collected. On the natural slope the run-off data were collected during single rain of 10 mm intensity. Conservation values (Cv) for soil, water and nitrogen were calculated. Soil Cv ranged from 64.28% to 96.00% and 67.89% to 96.26%, water Cv ranged from 41.67% to 75.00% and 65.34% to 76.00% and total nitrogen Cv ranged from 64.33% to 85.21% and 77.05% to 89.86% for different species at both, artificial and natural slopes respectively. It was found that Saccharum spontaneum L. was the most efficient species in conservation. It was also found that growth of vegetation mostly influences the run-off and nitrogen losses.

Low species diversity accompanied high population of Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. Cirsium arvense litter, ground roots, and ground foliage added to soil in greenhouse bioassay tests reduced growth of Khatua (Chenopodium ambrosoides L). and green foxtail Setaria tomentosa (Roxb.) Kunth. more than cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) or barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The addition of nutrients did not mask the toxic effect. Ethanolic extracts of Cirsium arvense roots and foliage were similar in their ability to reduce radicle growth of barley, cucumber, green foxtail, and Khatua in Petri dish studies. There was no significant difference between water controls and controls adjusted to the average pH and osmotic potential of the extracts. Germination of barley and cucumber seed was not affected. Comparison between ethanolic extractions and soil incorporation of plant residues with presumably non-allelopathic plants revealed that cucumber and barley extracts reduced Khatua radicle growth whereas barley and green foxtail extracts increased green foxtail radicle growth. These effects were not observed when these plant residues were mixed in soil.

Deals with the microbial diversity in phyilospora of some Asteraceous medicinal plants. Result showed 11 genera belonging to 21 sp. in which Asprgillus flavus, A. niger, A. terreus and Curvularia sp. were present. The 100% frequency of A. flavus was recorded only on Eclipta with 1.2 density where as maximum density of 1.4 was recorded for A. niger on Blumea ampletens. Mucor hemalis was present on Eclipta, Spilanthes and Tagetes erecta with 20-60% frequency and 0.2-0.6 density.

The communication deals with traditional uses of Cordia dichotoma Forst. F. locally called Lasora, family Boraginaceae. The plant is perennial, middle sized, crooked tree, native of Tropical Asia and Australia and occurs in all the warmer parts of India, especially in North Western Tarai Region of U.P. The region is very rich in ethnic as well as floristic diversity. The inhabitants of the area have inherited a rich traditional knowledge on the use of Lasora tree in the management of their various ailments viz chronic orthopaedic fever, dropsy, dysentery, dyspepsia, cholera, catarrh, headache and skin diseases. Phytochemical investigation of the plant is desirable for more useful information.

Field experiment was conducted during the rainy season (kharif) of 2005 on sandy loam soils at BN College of Agriculture, Assam Agricultural University, Biswanath Chariali to study the effect of different weed control measures in soybean (Glycine max (L) Merill). Grain yield and weed control efficiency were the highest with Quizalofop ethyl @ 50 g ai/ha + chlorimuron @ 9 g ai/ha as post emergence application. Reduction in grain yield was recorded up to 80% under weedy check. Data also indicated that two hand weeding each at 20 and 40 DAS may be practised in place of herbicides.

The study revealed the effect of Diethyl sulphate on seed germination and seedling growth in M1 generation of Solanum melongena L. by treating the seeds of one variety i.e. Pusa Kranti with ten different doses (0.01, 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.075%, 0.1%, 0..25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.25%) of DES. In general, the seed germination and seedling growth was found dose dependent. The seed germination and seedling growth decreased with increasing doses of DES. However, the inhibition in germination increased with increasing doses of DES.

The experiment was carried out in pot culture. Grape is commonly propagated through hardwood cutting. Inoculation of VAM with to soil for grape increases the nutritional availability and improves the growth of plant. It was observed from the investigation that inoculation of VAM, reduce the days required for root initiation, increase the percentage of root colonization, improve percentage of rooting, reduce days required for sprouting, increase shoot length and diameter, increase number of root per plant and length of root and also improve the survival percentage of plantlet over the control.

In plants catalase enzyme mainly present in microbodies e.g., leaf peroxisomes are formed in cotyledones of germinating seeds and non green tissues (Hypocotyl) of seeds, there fore, work has been carried out to know the presence as well as activity of this enzyme in some plants of family poaceae. Results shows that catalase enzyme activity has been found highest in P. typhoides and lowest in 0. saliva. Total N^-1., contents found maximum in again P. typhoides and minimum in H. vulgare. Similarly total percentage of amino acids has been found maximum in H. vulgare and minimum in O. sativa.}

Roccella montagnei Bel emend Awas and R. belangeriana Awas were keyed out as distinct species based on their reproductive strategies. These two species are similar in their morphology and secondary chemistry. The phylogenetic relationship analysis using maximum parsimony method based on ITS sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA clustered these two species in a single clade with a bootstrap value of 100 indicating that these two species are the same.

Aerides maculosum Lindl is one of the most important orchids valued for its beautiful inflorescence/flowers. The present study aimed to understand the level of genetic variation among the populations of A. maculosum using RAPD and ISSR markers. Among the 35 primers tested, 13 RAPD and 6 ISSR primers were selected for the analysis. Total of 101 RAPD and 40 ISSR fragments were generated. High level of polymorphism was recorded in RAPD (90.45%) compared to ISSR (72.85 %). Nei's average genetic identity values for different populations of A. maculosum- ranged from 0.465 to 0.762 (RAPD), while for ISSR it ranged from 0.475 to 0.975. The present study provides important insights about genetic variation in A. masculosum and may facilitates the conservation and management of this species.

Investigation was carried out to decompose raw solid waste collected from the Avinashilingam University campus, Coimbatore, into an organic manure using Effective Microorganism (EM) technology. The collected solid waste was put in a compost pit and allowed to decompose for 60 days by spraying activated EM. After 60 days of decomposition, biochemical parameters like, cellulose, organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phenol, C:N, reducing and non-reducing sugars were analyzed in raw and EM-composted solid waste. The results of the study revealed there was a decrease in all the above parameters except nitrogen. So, the biodegraded solid waste can be used profitabily as an organic manure substitute to promote the growth and yield of various crops.

Protocol for direct differentiation of shoots from leaf segments of Lilium cv 'Orange Pixie' was developed through in vitro melhods. After hardening, tissue-raised plants were transferred in the open field conditions from the very beginning. The acclimatized plants not only grew well but flowered also at 43°C under subtropical climatic conditions and regenerated a new bulb at their base after flowering. The activity of different antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase and their isoenzymes patterns showed differential up and down regulation in control and in different parts of in w'fro-raised plants. Characterization of both high and low molecular mass heat-shock proteins (HSPs) was done using HSP70 and HSP 18.1 antibodies against pea (Pisum sativum L), respectively. The level of high molecular mass proteins did not change much and was found to be of constitutive nature, whereas a new small protein of 21 kD was induced only in tissue culture-raised flowering (TF) plants indicating the possible role of this stress protein in acclimatization and flowering of Asiatic hybrid lily plants at 43°C under tropical conditions. The amount of this protein was much higher in petals as compared to stem and leaf.

Maximum inhibition was shown by C. indicum due to Dithane M-45 followed by Fytolan and Topsin M-70. Dithane M-45 caused maximum inhibition in radial growth both at lower as well as higher concentrations.

District Bareilly has several lentic habitats which are represented by temporary and permanent ponds supporting several aquatic microphytes as well as macrophytes. For the present investigation four sites situated in different directions around Bareilly were selected. The ponds located at their respective sites were surveyed at monthly interval throughout the study period (June 2005 - May 2007) and the macrophytes were collected and identified. In total 41 species of macrophytes belonging to 38 genera and 23 families were recorded which included one species of Algae, 2 species of Pteridophyta and 38 species of angiosperms. Angiospermic macrophytes belonged to 11 families of dicots and 9 families of monocot. The macrophytic flora represented all the five classes of hydrophytes, however maximum number of species exhibited EA (emergent anchored) habit.

Ethnobotanical survey carried out among the tribals inhabiting in North Western Tarai Forests of U.P., brought to light a number of plant species used as herbal medicines for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases. During the survey of study area, twenty plant species represented by sixteen families and nineteen genera were recorded by interviewing traditional herbalist, local healers and elderly men and women of the society. The tribal population of the area primarily depends on these plant species to cure their various eye problems such as cataract, conjunctivitis, eye allergies, retinal problems etc. Phytochemical and clinical investigations of these plants are desirable for more useful and interesting results.

Morton plants under NaCI salinity, in order to determine the effects of soil salinity on the biochemical constituents of this plant. The reducing and non-reducing sugars, amino acid, glycine betaine and enzyme activities like α and β-amylases were estimated from all parts (tuber, stem, leaf) of the plants. Except amino acid and glycine betaine, all other parameters were found decreased under salinity stress.

Photosystem II and whole chain electron transport activities of spheroplasts isolated from Synechococcus declined due to high temperature treatment beyond 35C. Unlike PSII, the Photosystem I activity showed enhancement due to high temperature treatment. The intersystem catalyzed PSI electron transport was extremely sensitive to high temperature indicating the plastoquinone as main target. Light intensity measurements of PSII catalyzed electron transport clearly indicated that alterations in the light-harvesting complex II (phycobilisomes) is responsible for the altered PSII photochemistry in this cyanobacteria.

The proportion of the fusiform initials was found to be 75% mean tangential area in the cambial zone of presently investigated species.

Aqueous, culture supernatant and organic extracts of N. commune were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial activity against four Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus pumilus) and four Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, and Klebsiella pneumonias). The methanol extract showed more potent activity than other organic and aqueous extracts. No antibacterial activity was detected in dichloro methane extracts, hexane extract and culture supernatant. No inhibitory effect was found against AT. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. typhi. Gram positive bacteria were found more susceptible as compared to Gram-negative bacteria.

Kalmegh is an excellent medicinal plant with multiclinical properties. To study the effect of integrated nutrient management in Kalmegh, seventeen combinations of organic, inorganic nutrients and biofertilizers were experimented at the Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam, Theni District, Tamil Nadu during 2003-2004. The study revealed that application of 15 t FYM ha^-1 + 45: 25 : 25 kg NPK ha^-1 + 1 kg Azospirillum ha^-1 resulted in maximum nutrient content in leaf tissues, herbage yield and andrographolide content of Kalmegh.
