All the treatments with ethrel caused reduction in height and delay in flowering. One or two treatments with 0.1% etherl induced 98.0 and 99.0% pollen sterility and brought about insignificant reduction in yield in comparison to control.

It was observed that fungal population vary from season to season and month to month. Environmental factor plays an important role for the distribution of the fungal spores.

In T.S., the petioles in majority of the species are circular in outline and channeled either shallow or deep. The vascular tissue is generally resolved into a prominent or medium-sized arc or bundel in the center and two smaller bundles usually adaxial to it. They are generally bicollateral. The taxa are anatomically diagnostic and significant.

The biochemical changes, like chlorophyll 'a', total chlorophyll, carotenoids, total sugars, starch and proline contents were also studied. The favourable growth responses were conformed at 300 mM.

Abscission of leaves in two varieties viz. altissima and sabdariffa of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. was observed following spray applications of different concentrations of plant growth hormones viz. GA₃, KM, IAA. ETH and ABA. Sprays were applied to intact plants at the time of the expansion of twelfth leaf. The two tested varieties showed the same response to the applied plant growth hormones. GA₃ delayed the abscission of leaves significantly and has come up as the most potent retardent of abscission of leaves in the intact plants in there natural field conditions. KN, like GA₃ has also enhanced the pre-abscission period of all the ten tested leaves in both the varieties significantly. IAA retarded the leaf abscission effectively and significantly. ETH highly accelerated the abscission of treated leaves and this acceleration effect has been significant and progressive with increasing concentrations. ABA also reduced the pre-abscission periods of all the ten tested leaves in both the varieties potentially and significantly, but could not compete with ETH.

Abscission of leaves, flower buds, flowers and young fruits in Hibiscus sabdariffa L. var. altissima, Abelmoschus esculentus L. (Moench) var. Pusa sawani, Cestrum nocturnum L., and Cestrum diurnum L. was observed following spray applications of gibberellic acid. Sprays were applied to intact plants of H. sabdariffa L. var. altissima and A. esculentus L. (Moench) var. Pusasawani at the time of expansion of 12th and 9th leaf respectively, and to young selected branches of C. nocturnum L. and C. diurmum L. about a fortnight before flowering. In H. sabdariffa L. var. altissima sprays were also applied at bloom stage to study the abscission of flower buds and young fruits. Treatments of gibberellic acid on these intact plants in field, showed varied results. While abscission of leaves was promoted in A. esculentus L. (Moench) var. Pusa sawani and C. nocturnum L., it was delayed significantly in H. sabdariffa L. var. altissima and C. diurnum L. Abscission percentage of flower buds and young fruits in H. sabdariffa L. var. altissima and flowers in C. nocturnum L. and C. diurnum L, was effectively reduced. Results obtained in these experiments are discussed in the light of the present knowledge of gibberellin controlled abscission.

Pigment contents, protein contents and total N were substantially enhanced, whereas, proline accumulation was reduced in plants when fed with either cobalt or molybdenum under saline and non-saline conditions as well. However, the effect of cobalt was more pronounced and consistent than molybdenum.

Three Riparian weeds viz Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers, Parthenium hysierophorus L. and Sida acuta Burm f. were selected to study their conservation efficiency for soil, water and nitrogen conservation. These species were taken from the right bank of River Kali which flows 16 km. North from the Aligarh city. Artificial experimental slopes were made in the Botany Dept. D.S. College, Aligarh. These species were transplanted on experimental plots separately. Simulated (15 cm/hrs.) rainfalls were applied on artificial slopes to collect the data. Water and soil running down the sloping plots were separately collected in reservoirs at the lower end, and their quantities were measured. Runoff water and eroded soil were analyzed for different forms of nitrogen. After calculating their conservation values for different species it was found that Cynodon dactylon was the most efficient species in conservation of soil, water and nitrogen in surface runoff.

Fresh plant parts extract of Parthenium was used to observe the effect on growth of bottle gourd, which shows the significant increase in seed germination and different growth parameters viz., germinability (% seed germination), speed of germination, coefficient of velocity of germination, emergence index, relative seed germination, root and shoot lengths, relative root elongation, fresh and dry weights, seedling growth and, vigour index, on Lagenaria siceraria (Lauki Long. M.L. Seeds). Cent percent germination was observed on 9th day with the concentrations of 10%, 20%. 30%, 40% and 60% root extract. The same was also observed with 40% and 60% shoot extract on 5th day and 100% germination was observed with only 10% and 20% leaf extract on 9th day. Only 80% germination was observed with flower extract on 11th day. This stimulatory effect on growth parameters of Lagenaria in order of Parthenium parts extracts was Root and Shoot > Leaf and Flower.

Ten strains of four blue-green algal genera viz. Chlorogloeopsis (1) Nostochopsis (1), Hapalosiphon (4), Westiellopsis (4) were studied for allelopathic interaction response in growth within Stigonematalean strains and with other members of Blue-green algae. The Stigonematalean strains Chlorogloeopsis-354,Nostochopsis-368,Hapalosiphon-53 and Hapalosiphon-350, Westiellopsis-370 and Westiellopsis-392 were found auto-inhibitory, whereas Hapalosiphon-196, Hapalosiphon-384, Westiellopsis-29, Westiellopsis-61 were auto-stimulatory. Culture filtrate of Hapalosiphon-196 was most inhibitory for the growth of most of the strains. However, Hapalosiphon-196 showed good response of growth in the culture filtrate of most of the strains, whereas the growth of Chlorogloeopsis-354 was inhibited in culture filtrate of all other strains. It is also revealed that culture filtrate of Anabaena and Nostoc showed inhibitory effect on the growth of the strains of Stigonematalean members of Blue-green algae were under study.

The activity of IAA oxidase enzyme in four wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (Kharchia, HD - 2009, Sharbati Sonora and HD - 2236) was determined under varying electrical conductivity (dsm^-1) levels created by NaCl application. The four cultivars studied were found to show a different degree of response to NaCl concentration, Kharchia showed highest growth followed by HD - 2009, Sharbati Sonora and HD - 2236. With variation in growth due to saline medium a marked difference was also observed in the IAA oxidase enzyme activity. While maximum enzyme activity was recorded in Kharchia, HD - 2236 showed the least. Though with increasing age of the seedlings all the four cultivars showed an increased trend in enzyme activity till 96 hours after which at 120 hours there was a sudden decline in the enzyme activity but the degree of increase in activity with duration differed with the cultivars. Maximum rise was observed in HD - 2236 followed by HD - 2009, Sharbati Sonora and minimum was in Kharchia. On the other hand, with increasing salt concentration there was a general decrease in activity of the enzyme in all the four cultivars studied, however, genotypic variations were clearly observed. Thus, the differential behaviour of the cultivars with respect to IAA oxidase enzyme activity also reflects on the probable genotypic variation in the response of above cultivars to salt stress.

Basalin EC altered the resting period of pollen of all the 11 species of Petunia axillaris. It extended the resting period of pollen in 9 series, while reduced in 2 series. Maximum extension in the resting period of pollen is noted in F-24 series of light-violet-flowered cultivar. Pollen of the said series showed their first sign of their germination after one hour of sowing in vitro culture of sucrose, while they did not geminate even 10 hours of their sowing in vitro culture of sucrose supplemented with basalin EC (table 1). Maximum reduction in the resting period of pollen is noted in F-24 series of white-violet-flowered cultivar of P. axillaris. Pollen of the said series did not germinated even 10 hours of their sowing in vitro culture of sucrose, white they were found germinated 7 hours of their sowing in vitro culture of sucrose supplemented with basalin EC.

Three hundred seven samples belonging to 217 species of herbaceous plants were extracted in 50% ethanol in 1:5 ratio. These extracts were screened for their antibacterial activity against the test pathogen Enterobacter spp. by Inhibition zone technique. The leaf extract of. the Clitoria ternatea Linn, was found to be the most active forming largest inhibition zone in our experimentation. In the communication 12 species of plants with inhibitory activity against Enterabacter spp. are being reported. Further studies on this plant, to find out the active fraction, are in progress.

In pot culture pre-inoculation spraying of P. fluorescens (10⁹ cfu/ml) and Cladosporium spp. (5.5 x 10⁵ coindia/ml) recorded the maximum disease reduction of both sheath rot and bacterial blight diseases. Fusarium sp. exhibited the least antagonistic activity against sheath rot and bacterial blight pathogens both in vitro and on rice plants in not culture.

Pot experiment was performed to observe the effect of triacontanol (a long chain aliphatic alcohol) on various growth parameters of Cowpea. The present investigation showed that this plant growth regulator is effective in improving general growth of the plant and nodulation. Triacontanol (Miraculan) was sprayed at three stages of growth, i.e., 20 40 and 60 DAS (Days After Sowing) in different concentrations. Observations were made with references to the height and weight of the plant, leaf growth and nodulation. The enhancement effect was observed with lower concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 ml/L) against control. The observation revealed that number of leaves was enhanced with all the concentrations (38.71%, 38.46% and 34.10%) and increases the nodule number (58.23%, 35.03% and 26.96%) and delayed nodule senescence at 25,45 and 65 DAS. respectively.

Virus causing mosaic disease in squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) showed mosaic mottling, stunting and reduction in number and size of flowers and fruits in the suburbs of Aligarh, India. The study was carried to confirm its identity. The virus was transmitted mechanically by sap and by seeds upto 40% and also by aphids viz. Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae but not through soil. The host range of virus was restricted to 4 families viz. Chenopodiaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Leguminosae and Solanaceae infecting 23 plant species, it has a DEP 10^-5 where as longevity in vitro was found to be 60h at 20±5°C and 3 weeks at 4°C and TIP of 65°C. The symptoms, biophysical properties, host range and transmission showed that the virus was of CMV strain. The virus gave positive reaction to CMV antiserusn. thereby confirming its identity.

Unfortunately, due to legal and illegal exploitation from wild, anthropogenic pressure and lack of knowledge about sustainable harvesting of useful bioresources particularly medicinal plants, many of them has been listed under the categories of rare, threatened, endangered or at the verge of extinction. A central problem is a continuing loss of biodiversity in the Himalaya, but our knowledge about human dimension of biodiversity is still relatively limited. However, there are several medicinal plant species found growing in the region but has not still given priority for conservation due to lack of awareness about their usefulness and potential; and the Ginkgo biloba Linn. is one of them.

Seeds of Mucuna pruriens were cultured on MS basal media to obtain plantlets. Development of root and stem with leaves were investigated from excised stem, leaf and cotyledon tissue. Light brown callus formation was always followed by formation of milky white callus on the surface of young (6-7 days) excised shoots and leaf tissues. Sometimes green callus was also observed.

Cancer (malignant tumour) is the second leading cause of death in human beings. The 'plant kingdom' is the milestone to ameliorate the genetic, environmental and malnutrition (food related) carcinogens. Many plants and plant products such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, plant extracts and plant-derived drugs, etc. have been reported for the prevention and treatment of various cancers. Consumption of large amounts of vegetables and fruits can prevent the development of cancer. Considerable works have been done on such anticancer agents and some of them have been marketed as anticancer drugs, based on the traditional uses and scientific reports. Although the mechanism of many anticancer agents is unknown, nevertheless the consumption of such plants and plant products decreases the risk of developing cancer. The plants and their products may promote host resistance against infection by re-stabilizing body equilibrium and conditioning the body tissues. Several reports describe that the anticancer activity of these anticancer agents is due to the presence of certain phytochemical antioxidants in them. The antioxidants prevent from cancer and other diseases by protecting cells from damage caused by 'free radicals'- highly reactive oxygen compounds. Hence, the present article elucidates some anticancer agents of plant origin, which exhibit potent anticancer activity.

Saraca asoca Roxb. De Wilde is an important medicinal plant belonging to the family Caesalpiniaceae in India. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is one of the dreadful diseases of this plant resulting in total loss of photosynthetic area as the disease advances progressively. In the study, five fungicides viz. Bavistin, Captan, Dithane M-45, Topsin M, Tridemorph were challenged against the pathogen. Bavistin, among them was found to be superiorly effective over Topsin M followed by others in descending orders. Biocidal effect of ten plants species viz. Datura metel, Leucas biflora, Croton bonplandianum, Achyranthes aspera, Sida cordifolia, Azadirachta indica, Rauvolfia serpentina, Eucalyptus globutus, Zingiber officinale and Allium sativum on vegetative growth of the pathogen was also investigated. Maximum percentage of inhibition on radial growth of the pathogen was recorded by the bulb extract of A. sativum (94%) followed by the leaf extracts of R. serpentina (86%) and D. metel (84%). A combined trial with effective fungicide (Bavistin) and biocide (extract of A. sativum) could have been the best way of controlling in vitro growth of the pathogen.

Samanea saman is a medicinal plant tropically distributed. The aim of the present work is to quantify the amount of major phytochemicals present in the leaves of the plant Samanea saman. The alkaloids were quantified by using Harborne (1973) method, flavonoids by Boham and Kocipai-Abyazan (1994), saponins by Obadoni and Ochuko (2001), tannins by Van-Burden And Robinson (1981) method and phenolics by spectro-photometric method described by Harborne (1973). All the measurement were calculated for 100 g dry weight of the leaves. The alkaloid content was found to be 1.38 ± 0.14, flavonoids were about 8.6133 ± 0.150, saponins were 2.26 ± 0.0624, phenolics contributed 0.215 ± 0.002 and tannins were 20.217 ± 0.0538. These phytochemicals were shown to posses a number of medicinal properties and this plant can be used for mitigating several disorders reported in traditional system of medicine.

A survey was conducted in the experimental garden of the Department of Botany, to evaluate the seasonal variation of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi associated with roots of a medicinal plant Coleusforskohlii. VAM spores were found to be maximum in rainy season, moderate in summer and minimum in winter. Similarly, root colonization by VAM fungi was highest in rainy season, moderate in summer and less in winter season. Glomus spp. were the dominant VAM fungi over the others at the study site. Rainy season was the best for efficient colonization and establishment of VAM fungi in the experimental field.
