002956 Asha B (NO, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram) : Bibliometric properties of `Demography India'. Ann Libr Inf Stud 2007, 54(2), 73-80.
Analyses articles and citations in Demography India from 1972 to 2001. Identifies core areas of demographic studies, institution-wise contribution of articles and geographical area pertaining to the articles. It determines the trend-line and five-yearly moving average of the year-wise distribution of collaboration coefficients for ascertaining the trends in the distribution of single and multi-authored articles. Obtains slight inclination of authors towards collaboration. Using regression analysis formulates Lotka's relationships and hence determines the values of constant K and index ± in the relationship. Finds that Lotka's relationship is valid for authors with more than three publications only. Determines some closer relationship than Lotka's by using regression ranking. The study identifies most-cited journals, examines bibliographic forms of cited documents, average age of citations and rate of citation per article. The findings of this study are compared with the results of similar studies.

The advancements in computer and telecommunication technologies have made the World Wide Web a vibrant place. Museums worldwide have recognised this phenomenon and are tapping the multimedia and interface technologies to present their contents online and in a more interesting manner. First priority to this is the user interface design and appropriate technologies to represent the contents. Discusses an animated interface created for an online exhibition with the Macromedia Flash software and compared the same with HTML user interface. The system evaluation results shows that only less than half of the users were satisfied with the animated version because of its inflexibility in terms of reusing and customising of information. Therefore, a HTML version was developed for the same system and compared for strengths and weaknesses in terms of user interfaces. The results showed that the respondents, especially those with lower bandwidth connections, were very comfortable with the HTML interface but aesthetically a few more percentage of respondents rated high to animated interface. The paper conclude that a balanced combination of HTML and animated interfaces will provide both aesthetics and functionality required for an online exhibition.

In addition, the unabated resources degradation, rapid loss of prime agricultural land to non-agricultural uses, economic liberation and the resultant global competition, intellectual property right issues and information revolution have added a new dimension to the research needs of the country. Therefore, even with the much acclaimed Green, White, Yellow and Blue revolution there is no room for complacency as the research in the country has to be geared up to meet emerging and even bigger changes in the future.

The importance of Knowledge/Information commons for an advanced society and a developed nation. Examples are set on conceptual perspectives with a tilt towards Indian context. Knowledge Commons (KCs) believe in the creation and equal distribution of knowledge/information. Copyright is encouraged on the same principles. Many rights are conferred to the copyright holder by virtue of its owner. Sometimes greedy copyright holder does not share their creation for public good as they rely on heavy monetary benefits. The dilemma begins here when the societal advances are stopped. To advance this creation for the benefit of the society, authority use compulsory licensing system. Compulsory license can bring the balance between the monopoly of the author and the knowledge demand of the society.

The year 2007 marked the bicentenary of an act of parliament that abolished slave trading in the British empire. Throughout the UK, British heritage and educational institutions, the government sector, and other organisations decided to use this anniversary to look at the legacy of the slave trade as a vehicle for community outreach, sharing of their collections through imaginative, moving, and provocative online projects that also address contemporary issues related to identity, race, poverty, and migration in a multicultural, global society. Most of the 2007 event driven websites, news articles, publications, education resources, and online exhibitions or those created just prior to 2007 or just after, which are meant to be long term resources on these issues, have been organised into a web collection on the Internet archive (IA). This paper aims to provide a critical look at online exhibitions versus online collections in the context of the 2007 bicentenary, specifically comparing the effectiveness of websites called "online exhibitions" from a user perspective with websites called "educational resources," in this IA collection. In addition to defining and providing examples of "collections" or "exhibitions" this paper attempts to explore ideas for the types of institutional and shared material that lend themselves to creating either an online exhibition or an online education resource.

A country like India where more than 30% of the population is still without literacy. The percentage of the people involved in continuous reading and learning process may be less than ten percent. However it is a fact that the percentage of such people is considerably less. This situation needs to be improved by evolving effective strategies. Distance mode of education is gaining popularity in the light of the need for specialisation and excellence in various activities of the employed as well as educated unemployed young adults. L1S, being a job-oriented course, has great demand among the educated youths who wish to get a better job. However, the distance mode of education is still to be developed in its standard and functioning especially in professional courses like LIS. The perception of the learners of LIS through distance mode reveals that insufficient practical sessions is the most important problem faced by them.

The Development of Communication technology is playing a vital role in the development of society. In earlier days vocal and pictoral methods were mainly used for communication. But now -a -days these primitive methods have given way to electronic pulses. Information of communication technologies have brought changes in the modes and methods of Information storage, retrieval and transmission. The advent of Internet and its world wide web has created a greater impact on the Library and information centers to have access to various information sources and disseminate it to users. The services available in Internet can be utilized by the library and Information centers for acquisition, collection development and various services as CAS, SDI, ILL, Reference Service etc. through various types of resources that are available on Internet. This paper discusses the importance of the Internet in Library functions and services provided by Library and information centers. Web offers significant advantages by integrating different Library and information services with a common user interface offered by web browsers. With the demand of adopting this new age of technology, metropolitan network have to become more efficient to train the Library and information professionals and students.

Online virtual exhibitions (VEs) are acknowledged as important complimentary counterparts to physical exhibitions. It overcomes space, time and location restrictions and allows global visitors to access these priceless and exciting treasures that are stored in museums, archives and other institutions on a 24/ 7/365 basis. Well constructed VEs can offer alternative experiences to the "real thing" and open up other opportunities that include learning, more content beyond physical exhibits, active participation and contribution by visitors through forums and uploads, online shopping, and others. Provides a state-of-the-art review, and illustrates concepts and design considerations for the development of VEs that can be highly effective and efficient with minimal technological knowledge. By considering the important issues of metadata, system architecture design and development techniques, it becomes possible to generate a series of VEs to meet the needs of different user groups and at the same time cater to the constraints of the client computers, thereby providing the users the best possible experience in engaging with the VEs.

DESIDOC J Libr Inf Technol 2008, 28(4), 35-42.
This study addresses the development of an online authoring system that can be integrated into a typical digital archive system to facilitate the construction of online exhibitions. One common approach for the efficient online authoring is based on a principle that decomposes a hypermedia presentation into a "content document" and a "style template." This study proposes a layer-based architecture to further decompose a style template into a number of presentation layers. The approach eases the burden for implementing large-scale style templates in digital museum projects demanding versatile presentation styles. Particular attention has been focused on the mechanism for affective background image composition that incorporates the concerns of the affective colour scheme and the page layout. A system implementation has been successfully applied in real world digital museum projects for constructing aesthetic online exhibitions.
