Use of plants as medicine is known to human being, since time immemorial and use of herbal medicines have been practiced by all human cultures. In fact Indian system of medicines has played an important role in our country in providing medical care since antiquity. Ancient tradition of Indian medicines viz., Ayurveda, Unani and Sidha and now, even allopathy drives many of curative tools from plants. However, much of the medicinal uses known to tribal and rural folks remain undocumented and thus this knowledge of theirs is prone to disappear with times. It is therefore, present work was carried out to document medicinal and other economic uses of tropical tasar silkworm food plants. The tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta D. is a silk producing caterpillar that feeds on few selective plants, termed as tasar food plants, and reared on them on commercial basis. These tasar food plants are also being used for their medicinal value to cure various ailments so also used for other purpose of economic value. The Terminalia group of trees form main constituent of "Triphala" the famous Herbal medicine. All such uses of these plants needs to be properly documented for reaping the medicinal uses of these plants at commercial level to boost economy of people involved in tasar culture so also to make tasar culture more remunerative. Tasar food plants covered in present study are Terminalia tomentosa, T. Arjuna, Lagerstromea parviflora, Anogeissus latifolia T. bellerica, T. chebula, T. catapa, Ziziphus mauritiana, Madhuca indica, Ficus hispida, F. religiosa, Dalbergia sissoo etc. It is hoped that data of present study may come handy in short listing of few important tasar food plants for afforestation, as they are eco-friendly too.

In the present study, an effort was made to explore the diversities of indigenous knowledge systems pertaining to human health among rural women. Respondents and villages of study were selected purposively from eastern part of Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, India. Data pertaining to study were collected by using the participatory approach, group discussions, participant observations and personal interview methods. Results indicate that women have their ancestral wisdom to cure many ailments and diseases. They use various bioresources available locally to mange ailments and diseases. For examples use of Datura stramonium, Tamarindus indica, Boerhavia diffusa, Blumea balsamlfera D.C., Amorphophallus campanulatus Blume., Sirka (fermented sugarcane juice), Aegle marmelos, Acacia nilotica and Phyllanthus amarus are quite popular among them ethnobotanicals which are used against various diseases and ailments. A range of indigenous fruits and tubers are also utilized during drought and food scarcity to meet the need of nutrition and maintain health. These indigenous practices of health were found to be appropriate on account of lower cost, good efficacy and easy local availability.

Pot culture experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of herbicide Excel Mera-71 foliar spray treatment on the growth parameters of black gram (Vigna mungo Hepper). Foliar spray treatment, with the aqueous solution of herbicide Excel Mera-71 (at 0.01% and 0.10%, w/v, level), was given to the 7 day and 15 day old black gram seedlings. The results of present investigation indicate that the herbicide Excel Mera-71 generally inhibit the growth of black gram seedlings, except root/ shoot ratio and the inhibitory effect was increased with increasing concentration of herbicide. The adverse effect of herbicide foliar spray treatment was recorded more in 7 day old seedlings and less in 15 day old seedlings. The tolerance index black gram seedlings (STI) against herbicide foliar spray treatment was more in 15 day old seedlings while, it was reduced in 7 day old seedlings.

Induced mutagenesis has been used very widely in plants to create genetic variability in traits of economic value. Lentil, an important high protein food legume plant botanically described as Lens culinaris L, belongs to family Leguminosaceae. The effect of mutagen like gamma rays was studied in lentil and data on lethality, pollen sterility, mitotic aberrations, percentage of seed germination, percentage of plant survival, seed fertility, mitotic index and total number of mutants in M₂ generation have been recorded. As a part of this study the effect of gamma rays was evaluated on the frequency of chlorophyll mutants in M₂ generation. From this data and the data on biological damage in M₁ generation of lentil, the mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency of gamma rays were worked out.

In this communication an attempt has been made to explore and record the ethno-medicinal uses of some medical plants used to treat different ailments in rural areas of Telangana Region, Andhra Pradesh. During survey, the experienced old folk, local vaidhyas/medicine men etc. of these communities were interacted for gathering information. Tribals used to treat not only the common ailments but also conditions like jaundice (Phyllanthus amarus, Morinda citrifolia), diarrhea (Zingiber officinale, Phyllanthus emblica, Allophylus serratus), lep-rosy (Baningtonia acutangula, Terminalia bellerica), malaria (Andrographis paniculata) and so on. The treatment given by them is found to be effective. More than 69 species are being practiced by the local people for treatment of various diseases were collected, identified and tabulated by mentioning Botanical names of the plant, local names, parts used, and their medicinal uses with mode of administrations of some important plant species and mentioned. A survey area map of the present study also provided.

Five seed sources of A. pindrow, collected from Garhwal Himalaya were studied for cone and seed characteristics and germination behaviour. Three different sizes of cones (large, medium and small) were observed in all the seed sources. The dimensions of large (14.25x4.76 - 16.04x4.56 cm), medium (11.45x4.17 - 12.28x 4.43 cm) and small (9.01x4.05 - 9.68x4.08 cm) sized cones in 5 different seed sources of A. pindrow oscillated greatly. The maximum cone moisture content also varied significantly (45.22-55.37%) in the cones. The largest seed observed was 1.17 cm long x 0.87 cm wide and the smallest was 0.56 cm long x 0.19 cm wide. The seed mass was heaviest with wings (7.35 gm/100 seeds) and without wings (6.84 gm/100 seeds) in Tapovan seed source on fresh weight basis. The highest (56.0%) germination was observed in Dudhatoli seed source at 10°C and the lowest (10.0%) at 25°C in Tapovan seed source. Dudhatoli seed source was recorded to be the best seed source, which may give highest productivity if tried on other sites. This seed source may be used to establish Seedling Seed Orchards due to additive genetic gain and higher germination percentage of seeds.

Strains of Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) Yabuuchi causing wilt in important medicinal and aromatic plants viz., coleus, davana, geranium, makoi and ginger were isolated and genetically characterized. The genetic diversity of Ralstonia solanacearum isolates was determined by RAPD analysis using five random Operon primers viz., OPH-19, OPA-1, OPA-2, OPG-8 and OPF-9. Genetic co-efficient of all the isolates were similar (65 per cent) and cluster analysis yielded two major clusters. A highly distinct cluster-1 included Ralstonia solanacearum isolates infecting geranium only from GKVK, which formed a separate group. The cluster 2 had two sub clusters viz., sub cluster-1 consisted six isolates of R. solanacearum infecting coleus (GKVK), coleus (Doddaballapur), davana (GKVK), ginger (Kerala), makoi (GKVK) and tomato (Kolar); while the sub cluster-2 consisted isolates of R. solanacearum infecting ginger (GKVK) and geranium (Chikkaballapur).

The paper deals with the isolation and screening of filamentous fungi for their potency to synthesize L-asparaginase. The fungi were cultured using submerged fermentation method to promote maximum enzyme production. Out of 16 fungi screened, three species of Fusarium and Penicillium viridictum demonstrated the ability to produce maximum amount of L-asparaginase. Fusarium was the most efficient fungus, showing highest yield of enzyme, when it was cultivated at 28°C for 16 days in an Asthana Hawker's medium.

An extensive exploration of Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) was conducted and 29 accessions were collected from different geographical regions of Kerala. They were evaluated during 2005-06 at College of Horticulture, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. Significant genetic variahility was expressed by all the characters studied. Assessment of biomass, Bacoside content and its contributing traits indicated that plants having short internodes with fleshy broader type of leaves and increased biomass yield gives higher Bacoside - A content. Cluster analysis indicated that there is no parallelism between geographical distribution and clustering pattern of accessions. The ideal plant type of Brahmi should have higher number of leaves with fleshy broader leaf lamina and shorter internodes. Accession 29 has identified as better plant for higher biomass yield and Bacoside A content followed by Accession 14. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) can be commercially grown for the extraction of Bacoside -A and other brahmi rich Ayurvedic products.

Survey of the major potato diseases in the district of Lakhimpur, Assam, revealed the occurrence of late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans, early blight caused by Alternaria so/ani and black wart caused by Synchitrium endobioticum in the potato crops of four different cultivars. Late blight disease was the most dominant and caused extensive damage to the crop. Climatic condition influences the disease development to a great extent. In a conducive environment, late blight disease develops even in the resistant varieties of the crop. Disease intensity was significantly low in the cultivar Kufri-Jyoti.

The summer season with abundance of water in the fields contained highest population of aquatics. Ipomoea aquatica and Eichornea cressipes among the angiosperms, Azolla pinngta and Salvinea cucul/ata among pteridophytes and the chlorophycean algae were the dominant flora in the rice fields.

Hyphal fragments, pollen grains, Insect scales and unidentified spores were also reported. The spores of Nigrospora, Alternaria, Curvularia, Cladosporium, Torula, Pithomyces, Epicoccum, Helminthosporium and Smut were common in occurrence.

Nine marine algae viz., Chaetomorpha indica, Enteromorpha intestinalis, Ulva lactuca, Gelidiella acerosa, Corallina officinalis, Gracilaria corticata, Sargassum spp., Galaxaura oblongata, Grateloupia spp. were screened for preliminary plytochemically analysis (carbohydrates, tannins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, saponins, flavonoids and alkaloids). Tannins, flavonoids and alkaloids were absent in all the algae investigated. Steroids were present only in C. indica, E. Intestinalis, G. acerosa and C. officinalis while cardiac glycosides were present in E. intestinalis, G. acerosa and saponins were present in E. Intestinalis, G. acerosa and C. officinalis.

The mycorrhizal associations of the tree species Grevillea robusta grown at different altitudes were investigated in different seasons in Servarayans hills a part of Eastern Ghats, Tamil Nadu. A total number of 24 AM fungal species were isolated from the rhizosphere soil samples of G. robusta tree species. Among them, Glomus spp. were dominant compared to other species. The percentage of infection was maximum in summer seasons and the spore population was maximum in winter seasons.

A-survey on the flora of Barid-Shahi, a famous heritage Fort of Bidar in Northern part of Karnataka was carried out from August 2006 to July 2007. The Fort was built by Ahmedshah Walli in 1436 A.D. The surrounding area of the Fort is 5.5 km and irregular in shape. The Fort area with semi arid conditions has dry deciduous vegetation. In the present study, 105 plant species belonging to 48 families of Angiosperms, 04 species of Pteridophytes (Ferns), 04 species of Bryophtes (Mosses) and 02 species of Lichens were recorded from the study area. The variation in the floristic diversity of a Fort may be due to the topography of the soil or the climatic conditions of the study regional.

Some of the ethnobotanically important plants found in this area are Achyranthes, Adhatoda, Barleria, Calotropis, Chenopodium, Cinnamomum, Madhuca, Nyctanthes, Tinospora, Tylophora etc. Medicinal plants of this area have been studied earlier by some workers like Bhargava (1982), Nagiyan et al. (2003) etc., but ethnobotany of this area is not much touched. This study is to emphasize the importance of ethnobotanical research and to document the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants of this area.

Anatomical characterization of two cultivated (C. olitorius L., C. capsularis L.) and seven wild (C. fascicularis Lam., C. acuwns L, C. pseudoolitorius Islam and Zaid., C. pseudocapsularis L., C. tridens L., C. trilocularis L. and C. urticaefolius Lain.) species of Jute (Family: Tiliaceae) has been made from cross sections of stem (basal zone: 1.5 cm. to 2.0 cm. above level; upper zone: 15.0 cm. to 20.0 cm. from apex) of uniformly matured plant (at fruit ripening stage, 175-180 days from sowing) considering the following aspects: fibre zone, appearance and shape of phloem fibre, number and area of fibre pyramid, number of bundles per pyramid, diameter of fibre cell, xylem area and nature of pith. Variations in anatomical features en the zones have been presented. A key to the identification of the species has been given. Results deciphered interrelationship among the germplasms which may be exploited for efficient breeding and crop improvement.

Apical meristem of Banana cv. Nendran was cultured aseptically in the MS medium. Survival percentage and shoot regeneration were studied in different concentration of BAP (0,2,4,6,8,10, mg L^-1). Among the different levels of BAP, better response of 93.67% survivability and 68.50% of single shoot multiplication was recorded in 6 mgL^-1 BAP. Shoot multiplication was studied in different concentrations of BAP and NAA. Maximum shoot multiplication (3.83/explant) with highest shoot length (3.42 cms) and maximum number of leaves (3.29) were achieved in Ms medium with 6 BAP and 1.5 mgL^-1 NAA.

020734   Lavanya C;Gopinath V (NO, , Directorate of Oilsees Research) : Inheritance studies for morphological characters and sex expression in pistillate lines of castor (Ricinus communis L.). Indian J Genet Pl Breed 2008, 68(3), 275-82.

Inheritance of morphological characters in four crosses of pistillate x pistillate lines indicated that stem colour was controlled by single gene while red stem colour was dominant over green stem colour. However, green stem colour in the cross DPC 13 x M 574 and green colour of petiole, capsules and spines in cross M 574 x DPC 11 showed digenic epistatic ratio to red stem colour, red colour of petiole, capsules and spines. The characters plant type and bloom were monogenically controlled while normal plant type and presence of bloom were dominant over dwarf plant type and absence of bloom respectively. Joint segregation analysis indicated that stem colour, plant type and bloom were segregating independently in all the four crosses. Pistillate character was dominant over pistillate with interspersed staminate flowers [ISF] and controlled by one [P₁] or two [P₁P₂] to four genes [P₁P₂ P₃P]. Joint segregation analysis indicated linkage between stem colour and dwarf plant type in the cross DPC 13 x DPC 11 and pistillate character [PJ and plant type [PtN] in cross M 574 x DPC 11. The distance between stem colour [Rst/gst] to plant type [PtDw] and single gene for pistillate character and plant type was estimated as 40.2 centimorgans and 47.6 centimorgans based on square root of frequency of double recessive phenotypes in F₂ data.

Sm., Passifloraceae, so far known from China (Yunnan) and Myanmar (Bhamo) is reported for the first time from India as a new distributional record. It is explored from the subtropical forest areas of Limiking (Alt. 1200 ± 50 m), Upper Subansiri District, Arunachal Pradesh, India. A brief taxonomic description of the taxon along with a colour photograph is provided.

Vermicompost is a method of making compost with the help of the earthworms. Earthworms are considered as biological indicators of soil fertility. They also eliminate pathogens from waste. In the present investigation tendu leaf litter (Diospyros melanoxylon : Roxb.Family.Ebenacae) was used for vermicomposting. Waste leaf litter is thrown as garbage in tons everyday. This enormous amount of leaf garbage has become a serious health problem and environmental hazard. In order to solve this problem, in an eco-friendly and economically profitable manner, an experiment was carried out to convert this biomass into vermicompost. The results are discussed in the light of variation in the different chemical composition of the leaf dry powder and the Vermicompost. The bioadsorbant nature of tendu leaf is also highlighted.

Experiment was conducted to test the effect of different botanicals as leaf powder along with kitchen ash and sand against the egg laying behaviour of pulse beetle, Cailosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) on chickpea Kabuli variety Dollar. The experiment showed that the leaf powder of goat weed (Ageratum conyzoids) @ 2.5 g/50 g of seeds was the most effective against the egg laying of C. maculates, while aak (Calotropis gigantia) leaf powder @ 2.5 g/50g of seeds and bathua (Chenopodium album) leaf powder of same dose were least effective with number of eggs. The remaining treatments were moderately effective.

The seasonal variation of total ash, water soluble ash and acid insoluble ash have been investigated in leaves, bark, wood and seeds of Semecarpus anacardium, Mallotusphilippensis and Pterocarpus marsupium which are medicinally important and extremely rare in South Gujarat Forest. Comparative account of total ash and water soluble ash content of bark of Semecarpus anacardium showed high level of total ash (range 16.87% to 21.12%) and water soluble ash (range 3.70% to 4.07%) than Mallotus philippensis and Pterocarpus marsupium. Acid insoluble ash content of bark of Semecarpus anacardium (range 9.83% to 11.42%) and Pterocarpus marsupium (range 8.21% to 9.93%) showed high level than Mallotus philippensis (4.61% to 5.65%).

Some commonly occurring macro algae namely Caulerpa scallpelliformis and Ulva tactuca (green algae), Padina tetrastomatica and Stoechospermum marginatum (brown algae) and Acanthophora spicifera (red alga) were used for this study. Powdered algal samples were extracted with benzene. Then these extracts were subjected to Infra red (IR) spectral study. Infra red spectral study indicates the presence of some functional groups in these extracts. All these extracts display a band in the region 2927 cm^-1 - 2856 cm^-1 characteristic band for C-H stretching vibration which gives evidence for the presence of aliphatic chain in the structure. These extracts display a band in the region 1732 cm^-1 - 1639 cm^-1 shows the presence of carbonyl group compounds in these samples.

Methanol extract of Ulva lactuca and Acanthophora spicifera were subjected to infra red (IR) spectral study and gas chromatogram/mass spectral (GC/MS) analysis. Infra red (IR) spectral study indicates the presence of some hydrocarbons and carbonyl compounds. Gas chromatogram/mass spectral (GC/MS) analysis for methanol extract of Viva lactuca showed three prominent peaks with retention time 11.583,13.200 and 13.400 indicating the presence of three compounds and that of Acanthophora spicifera shows three prominent peaks with retention time 11.300,12.883 and 13.083 indicating the presence of three compounds.

The paper reviews ecological investigation of naturally distributed and exotic mixed and monoculture plantation forest of Acacia auriculiformis, are mainly directed to study the biotic, physical and chemical characteristics of the site under different climatic conditions. Physiology and categorization of dbh classes, determination of biomass production have been considered. Prediction and estimation of biomass, net primary production, net energy production, production efficiency, energy flow, quantitative and qualitative litter production and its periodic and progressive decomposition studies are accounted to differentiate the uptake, return, retention with their respective turn-over time in the different climatic regions of the world. The paper also examines aspects on tannin contents, wood specific gravity, pest and diseases, fuel wood properties, pulp for paper production, fodder values, green manure uses and erosion control. It is concluded to be an excellent plantation species for diverse ecological and economic uses.

Experiment was conducted during 2004. The plants were treated with IAA, GA₃ and Kinetin on per plant basis. Three stages of development have been selected for analysis of Lb content in the nodules. The stages were 15 days, 30 days and 45 days after nodule initiation. It was observed that almost all growth regulators showed a general promotory effect on Lb biosynthesis and protein content of nodules at lower concentrations. Although, this enhancement was not observed after a particular concentration of growth regulators, which varies differently for different growth regulators.

Trichoderma harziarium and Trichoderma viride are taken for the study of their biomass characteristics with different concentration (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0%) of polyethylene glycol 6000(PEG) at Division of Plant Pathology, IARI, New Delhi. Different concentrations of PEG gave the significant results. Chlamydospores density significantly decreased with increasing the PEG 6000 concentration (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0%) in both sps of Trichoderma, While, chlamydospores size increased in both terminal and intercalary filaments of both sps. Chlamydospores size was observed more in T. harzianum in comparison to 27 viride.

Trichoderma sp like Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma viride are taken for the study of their biomass characteristics with different concentration (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0%) of polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG). As the PEG concentration increased, the wet and dry weight of fungal biomass affected, but the results were non-significant. While, the colony forming units (CFU) and conidial production significantly increased with increasing in the concentration of PEG 6000 nutrient medium in both the species. The CFU was observed maximum in Trichoderma harzianum while the numbers of conidia in Trichoderma viride.
