Interpretation of the main observations reported here centres on the role of shear and magnetic field for Oldroydian visco-elastic fluid. Extending the work of Goel and Agrawal³, it has been shown that shear acts as catalyst for instability while the magnetic field tends to suppress the instability caused by shear-a result which is compatible with most of the experimental and theoretical investigations.

The unsteady mixed convection boundary layer flow near the region of a stagnation point on a vertical surface embedded in a non-Darcian porous medium with temperature dependent viscosity and thermal radiation is studied. It is assumed that the unsteadiness is caused by the impulsive motion of the free stream velocity and by sudden increase in the surface temperature. Both the buoyancy assisting and buoyancy opposing flow situations are considered. Also, in this study we consider the presence of a solid matrix which exerting first and second resistance parameters. The partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically using an implicate finite difference scheme. The effects of the first and second resistances, viscosity and radiation parameters, Prandtl number and surface heat flux on the surface shear stress and the heat transfer are discussed. It is found the surface shear stress and the heat transfer increase with time and buoyancy parameter. The surface shear stress decreases with Prandtl number but the heat transfer increases.

Reliable estimates of crop yields at small area level, say blocks, are of great importance for policy planning at micro-level. To this end, application of present methodology of Crop-cutting experiments is not practicable, as it would require total number of such experiments to increase many folds. Additional information about farmers' estimates of crop yields at block level, which are crisp values, may be used provided these can explain the actual crop yields, which are fuzzy. Accordingly, in this paper, theory of fuzzy sets and possibilistic regression analysis is discussed. Three methods, viz. Minimization, Maximization, and Conjunction are considered. The methodology is applied for modelling cotton crop yields at block levels of Sirsa district, Haryana. It is found that Conjunction method performed the best. Further, farmers' estimates are able to explain the actual crop yields with fitness level as high as 0.6.

This paper analyzes the magnetohydrodynamic unsteady viscous stratified flow through a porous medium due to a moving porous plate under slip boundary condition for velocity field and jump in temperature field in presence of a heat source. The velocity of the porous plate decreases exponentially with time about a constant mean and a variable suction velocity is applied normal to the plate. A variable magnetic field is applied in the transverse direction in the form B = B₀e^-βy/2 for y ≥ 0. The governing equations of the flow field are solved using perturbation technique and the expressions for velocity field, temperature distribution, skin-friction and heat flux are obtained. The effects of the magnetic parameter (M), porosity parameter (K_p), velocity slip and temperature jump parameter (h₁, h₂), stratification parameter (a), suction velocity parameter (A) and the heat source parameter (S) on the velocity and temperature distribution of the flow field are analyzed and discussed with the aid of figures and tables.

Growth curve models are frequently used in a wide range of disciplines such as biology, ecology, demography, population dynamics etc. Living organisms exhibit different types of growth patterns. To analyze these curves investigators need adequate parametric models. A proper identification of the growth model is very important for the appropriateness of the subsequent analysis. In this paper we develop a natural goodness of fit test for the logistic growth curve model. Bhattacharya et al. (2004, 2008) have provided some interesting approaches based on Hill's method of finite differences (Hill 1968) in case of the exponential and exponential polynomial growth curve models. But in case of the logistic model their approach leads to very complicated and cumbersome mathematics. Basu and Bhattacharjee (2006) have presented an alternative method to test the goodness of fit for the exponential growth curve model by directly modeling the relative growth rate rather than the size variable itself. In this paper we extend that approach for testing goodness of fit in case of the logistic growth curve model.

Presents a steady-state performance analysis of a stand-alone three-phase induction generator self excited with unbalanced capacitances and supplying unbalanced loads. Using the method of symmetrical components, the complex three-phase generator-load system is reduced to a simple equivalent passive circuit. A function minimization technique is employed to solve this equivalent circuit in order to determine the excitation frequency and magnetizing reactance. The proposed method enables practically all cases of unbalanced operation of the self-excited induction generator to be analyzed. Emphasis is next focused on single-phase loads and a special phase-balancing scheme, namely the modified Steinmetz connection (MSC), is investigated. It is shown that perfect phase balance of the SEIG can be obtained with an appropriate combination of excitation capacitances and loads. Performance equations are derived using the method of symmetrical components, while the pattern search method of Hooke and Jeeves is used for the determination of the machine variables. The advantages of the generator include simple circuit configuration, small voltage regulation, good phase balance, and large power output. With an appropriate choice of the series and shunt capacitances, a nearly balanced operating condition can be obtained for a certain load.

Recently genetic algorithm based optimizations methods have been utilized in the power electronic controller parameter tuning, for the performance evaluation of Double-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) used for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). In principle, the problem of parameter tuning is to search a set of optimal parameters in the problem to achieve the best control performance of systems. The implementation of the algorithm for optimizing the controller's parameters is described in detail. In the analysis, the generic dynamic model of WT(Wind Turbine) with DFIG and its associated controllers is presented, and the small signal stability model is derived. With the optimized controller parameters, the system stability is improved under both small and large disturbances. Simulations are performed to illustrate the control performance. The variable speed wind turbine operated DFIG is controlled by power electronic equipment is used for active and reactive power control. There are several reasons for using variable-speed operation of wind turbines; among those are possibilities to reduce stresses of the mechanical structure, acoustic noise reduction and the possibility to control power factor.

Estimation of the time interval until the next large earthquake in a seismic source region is a difficult problem. Conditional probabilities for recurrence times of large earthquakes are a reasonable and valid form for estimating the likelihood of future large earthquakes. In this paper, we estimate the interval time for the occurrence of the next large seismic event assuming that the conditional probability of earthquake occurrence is a maximum, provided that a large earthquake has not occurred in the elapsed time since the last large earthquake. We employ a point process probability distribution that is based on a simple physical model of the earthquake recycle, that is the Brownian passage time (BPT) model. BPT model is a renewal model that describes the statistical distribution of rupture time. Application of this model in earthquake forecasting will be given at the end.

A one-dimensional boundary layer model is developed in order to predict the occurrence of fog. This model combines a soil model with heat and moisture budget equations for the ground surface with a numerical scheme to compute surface fluxes. The air temperature is predicted from a diffusion equation for heat in the air and uses a finite difference method to solve it. Weather observation data from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) at Don Muang during December 2003-February 2004 is used to test the model. The model gives a good result in the case of input high relative humidity.

Two-phase Magetohydrodynamic flow and heat transfer problem in a horizontal channel is considered in presence of a strong uniform magnetic field. The induced field is produced in the flow direction. The fluids of different phases are assumed to be immiscible, incompressible, steady, one-dimensional and fully developed. The viscosities and thermal conductivities are considered to be different for different phases. The transport properties being assumed to be constants and they are of equal term. The upper phase is conducting whereas the lower phase is non-conducting. The interest, of investigation is focused on upper-phase. The analytical solutions of velocities, induced magnetic field and temperature distributions are obtained and are computed numerically for different, heights and viscosity ratios for two fluids and for two different values of electric load parameters R_e. The computed results for velocity, magnetic field and temperature distribution are plotted for distances from the fixed horizontal plates and for different angle of inclinations.
