Presents two different Multi Citeria Decision Making approaches; analytic Hierarchy Process, Interactive Evaluation and Bound procedure, to enable the individual customers to identify the most desired decision alternative ina multi criteria environment. The output of Analytic Hierarchy Process is a prioritised ranking of the decision alternatives based on the overall preferences expressed by the customer. The latter approach calculates the bounds and performs tests to exclude some of the alternatives. This procedure repeats and terminates when a preferred alternative is identified. Both the approaches have been explained in detail for selecting of best choice of the models of the product `bicycle'.

Shop floor management is customer-oriented, which also enables managers and supervisors to easily manage their shops. Thus mainly involves updating the orders, beginning into reality the production plans etc. The primary goal of shop floor management is to enable the users to focus on what is to be done rather than who has the authority to do it. Shop floor management uses many management techniques, new problems solving tools and information flow. Shop floor management system is user friendly as they enable managers and supervisors to layout manufacturing and production information. It also enables the customer to focus mainly on their needs than focusing on authority behind the work. Thus shop floor system severs to both the customer and the manager. Shop floor management system have been becoming increasingly more affordable. It is more a necessity than an option because the system like these emphasizes on process as well as on structure by using different managing techniques and tools. The shop floor is considered as a place where people can add value to the society and strengthen is foundation.

There is the need to study the important role of working capital in profit generating process. If a company desires to take a greater risk for bigger profits and losses, it reduces the size of its working capital in relation to its sales. If it is interested in improving its liquidity; it increases the level of its working capital. However, this policy is likely to result in a reduction of the sales volume, therefore of profitability. Hence, a company should strike a balance between liquidity and profitability. In this paper an effort has been made to make an empirical study of Indian Consumer Electronics Industry for assessing the impact of working capital on profitability during the period 1994-95 to 2004-05. The impact of working capital on profitability has been examined by computing co-efficient of correlation and regression analysis between profitability ratio and working capital ratio.

Category management (CM) is a collaborative process between the retailer and manufacturer. This begins with shifting management's brand centric focus to category level growth. Intense competition and product proliferation leading to fighting for retailer's limited shelf space forces manufactures to maximize profit and optimize stock keeping units (SKUs) and shelf space at the store. CM is directly concerned with the increasing knowledge of consumer base and joint planning with supplier to improve profit and customer satisfaction. It is a demand side strategy to determine effective allocation of right shelf space to desired SKUs on the retailers' shelves. Research has shown that manufacturers and retailers continue to rate category management as "critically important" and remains a core business practice in consumer package goods (CPG) industry. The Indian consumer choices and preferences are changing very fast. They are more demanding in term of quality and variety now than before. Hence consumer needs to be served better in terms of quality product offerings at cheaper price within a product category. So it becomes inevitable for both retailers and manufactures to look collectively at the category growth. The paper looks at how CM can be used by Indian manufactures and retailers to gain sustainable advantage.

Supply chain has emerged as a major force in business environment efforts. And we are in the midst of a revolution in business commerce created by the emergence of the information technology (IT). The new era of digital economy is unfolding in front of us, yet many organizations are not taking advantage of its potential impact. Supply chain success just doesn't happen. This in turn provides agility to handle exceptions and to adapt to changes. It takes focus and effort across the entire organization and with outside suppliers and service providers: Logistics touches every part of a organization. So supply chain management must be multidimensional in its approach and scope. And this takes process, people and Information technology. This is true whether you are a wholesaler, retailer or manufacturer. And it is true if you are lean and need to be agile, stretchy and mutual. This paper provides an excellent track for combining these two powerful business tools to achieve integrated network collaboration and breakthrough improvement in both top and bottom line growth.

Control of manpower flows is an essential features of manpower Planning. To have a stable and efficient graded structure it is needed to study the constituent process of manpower system namely, recruitment process, promotion process and leaving process. Develops and analyses a two graded manpower planning model with open ended system. Using the differential equations the transient behaviour of the model is analysed. The system characteristics of the model like the average number of employees in two grades, the variances of the grade sizes and the covariance between the two grade sizes are derived through cumulant generating function of the joint grade size distribution. The sensitivity of the model is analysed through numerical illustration. The limiting behaviour of the system is also studied by deriving the joint probability mass function of the number of employees in the each grade under equilibrium. It is observed that the recruitment rates and promotion rates have tremendous influence on the grade size distribution.

The need of the hour is to develop awareness of TQM approach in banks to strive for achieving "Zero error" and "Zero grievance" levels. In fact, most of the bank systems and services are designed to control customers rather than satisfy customers. Banks in India, especially public sector banks, have to bring in more quality in their activities and services in order to be competitive in this changing banking environment. Most bankers would like to believe that they are in the finance industry and not in the service Industry. Thus they tend to compete in terms of financial poewrs rather than service quality. Total quality management, which is about total customer service and continuous customer satisfaction, is applicable not only to the manufacturing industry but also to the service sector where the customer is just as important. Services are where the the future is. It has eben witnessed in the most developed countries of the world that service sector has come to occupy the top position in their economies. Customer satisfaction perhaps is the only route to survival and growth. Developing strategies that focus on satisfaction as the starting point makes it imperative to identify what satisfies or makes the customer happy. The public sector banks must weed out potential bugs and build delight in their delivery to customers. Customer's decision to patronize one and not the other is based on quality service offered to him.

Within the domain of CRM, Analytical CRM analyzes data in an attempt to identify means to enhance a company's relationship with its clients. The applications of analysis include optimizing sales coverage, fraud detection, product development, financial forecasts etc. Focuses on warranty claims that can be analyzed to find common trends and find cost effective solutions to the root of any existing problems as well as discovering any potential fraud. A technique has been proposed which makes use of the ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory) network to classify customer complaints during the warranty period, so as to extract useful information that can be used to make decisions to improve the quality of a product. The most powerful analytical technology in the market right now is data mining. There are many data mining technologies currently in use, such as classical statistics (including chi-square, linear regression, etc.), rule induction and nearest neighbor techniques. The majority of them are well suited to straight forward data mining tasks. However, Neural Networks can be used for both deep knowledge discovery and complex predictive model construction. There are several types of Artificial Neural Networks in use today, but ART is more promising for clustering purposes.

In the changing economic scenorio of India, the expectations by the organisations from their managers have increased as each organisation is expected to outperform its competitors often globally with appropriate business strategy. The managers are expected to apply the new management concepts in this direction and also make decisions in the light of these new concepts. Further, the complexity of decision making has increased drastically in the recent years with increased number of decision variables, time availability to decide, frequency of decisions and finally impact of these decisions. Hence decision making, which is manager's job require thorough knowledge of new developments in the field of management and technology. In this context, this paper identifies and discusses various issues of management education to the practicing managers such as need identification, availability of educators, identification of knowledge gaps, unlearning poor practices, learning environment and applications specifically in manufacturing industry.

In any organization, successive exit of personnel leads to wastage in the form of man hours. The breakdown of the organization is triggered whenever the cumulative loss of manpower exceeds a particular level called threshold, beyond which the organization cannot sustain due to loss of protectivity. In this paper, an organization having four grades, with independent thresholds is considered and the mean and variance of the time to recruitment in this organization are obtained using the shock model and cumulative damage process of reliability theory. The analytical results are numerically illustrated by assuming specific distributions.

In any organization, the exit or wastage of personnel is very common. The exit of personnel in a marketing organization is quite frequent, especially when policies regarding incentives, targets are revised. An organization having two grades with a suitable univariate recruitment policy is considered. A mathematical model is constructed for this policy, assuming that the distribution of the thresholds for the two grades has SCBZ property. Explicit expression for the mean time to recruitment is obtained. The analytical result is numerically illustrated and relevant conclusions are made.

Forests have been integral part of Indian society constituting the largest, complex and most important natural resource mostly dominated by trees. These forests are under tremendous pressure and it is very unfortunate that awareness for forest protection is restricted to very limited sections of the society. Along with various factors forest fire is major cause of loss and injury to the forests. Deals with a new approach of "Modelling Technique" that should be worked out to prepare an effective forest fire management plan. Better planning of an organization could be made by use of Modelling Technique. This technique involves four steps i.e. recognition and analysis of the problem, identification of the variables, collection of data and lastly the model building.

Penetration of mobile services is not uniform across the country. While some areas of the country have experienced exponential growth, the other areas, especially economically disadvantaged, have very low mobile density. This mobile divide is a serious concern for government, policy makers and telecom operators. Predicting growth of subscriber base across regions of the country is critical for all stakeholders. The study aims to better forecast the penetration of mobile services across regions of the country so that their effect on economic development can be further explored and policies can be formulated to reduce the mobile divide.

Adlakha and Kowalski [Omega, 31, 205-11] present a heuristic algorithm for solving fixed-charge transportation problem with a fixed cost between an origin and destination pair which is independent of the amount transported, along with a variable cost that is proportional to the amount shipped. The method though simple is designed for only solving small problems and does not provide optimal solution in many instances as fixed costs increase. Presents a series of robust algorithms to extend the applicability to larger size problems including those with large fixed costs. Using randomly generated test problems, we present computational experience for the proposed and comparable algorithms.

Manpower planning is an interdisciplinary activity. It requires combined technical skill of statisticians, economists and behavioral scientists together with the practical knowledge of managers and planners. Manpower planning techniques have become an essential tool for the modem managers, especially in a climate of economic recession and government cutbacks. In manpower planning the completed length of service until leaving is of great interest, since it enables us to predict staff turn over. For a detailed account of this subject in this direction, refers to McClean and Colum Devine [8]. At the level of the firm, the availability of appropriate manpower is an important factor that contributes to the task force available for the completion of planned jobs and projects including industrial production. With the growing need for highly specialized and technical manpower to deal with very complex real life situations, suitable policies regarding recruitment, training and other aspects should be evolved taking into considerations all the existing ground realities. This reiterates the need for utilizing the expertise of the specialists in manpower planning. Service may be on hourly contract basis and also likely to be fairly costly. If the number of man hours on contract is in excess of the requirements there is wastage on one hand and on the other if the requirement is larger than the hired man hours, there is a shortage loss arising due to non completion of the work. In this paper an optimal policy for hiring of expertise service in manpower planning is discussed, and the optimal number of man hours to be hired is determined. Numerical examples are provided for exponential, truncated normal and Pearsonian type XI distributions.

Efficiency analysis has played a crucial role in defining regulatory policies, mainly in industries characterized by natural monopolies and/or by public ownership, as in the electricity sector. The objective of this paper is to assess the economic efficiency of Indian electricity distribution companies to generate information for an incentive-oriented regulation, with benchmarking. Results of benchmarking studies allow companies to compare themselves with the best in the class and then to develop strategic plans for improvements in their performance. We have applied DEA to provide quantitative evidence on the effectiveness of the power distribution sector and utilities under different perspectives for sustainability of the power supply industry in India. The result implies that a very large number of utilities in India are relatively inefficient, and there exists significant scope for improving the operations. This also implies the need for greater control on operation and maintenance (O and M) of infrastructure for making the sector sustainable.

The port infrastructure has gained tremendous importance with the rising volume of international trade in the era of globalization. As the majority of international merchandise trade is handled by seaports, the efficient port infrastructure provides comparative advantages to the nation in global competition. The efficiency of ports significantly depends on their capacity to utilize the available resources in an optimal manner. Therefore, the measurement of port efficiency can reflect their relative positions in the competitive environment. Since 1990's, India emphasized on international trade oriented growth, necessitating efficient port infrastructure. As 95% of India's international trade in volume is handled by ports, the efficiency of port sector becomes the prime matter of concern for policy makers. Available studies have rarely paid due attention towards measuring the efficiency of Indian Ports. This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to determine the efficiencies for major ports of India. The study identifies the efficient and inefficient major ports of India and discovers the sources of inefficiency for inefficient ports on the basis of DEA. As a feedback to the port operations in India, this study supplements existing studies by highlighting the scope of possible efficiency improvements that may help concerned agencies to achieve their potentials.

Growth, carcass characteristics and economics of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were studied under cage and deep litter system of management using 80 Japanese quail chicks (2-week-old, either sex). They were divided into 2 groups (cage and deep litter) with 2 replicates. Body weight gain (g/week) was higher in female quails irrespective of management system, but cage rearing resulted significantly higher body weight gain in both sexes than DLS. Feed consumption (g/bird/day) was comparable for both the managemental practices. Percentage carcass yields were significantly higher for thigh, back and neck under CSM for both sexes. Significantly higher yields of drumstick and wing in males under cage, and breast and wing in females under DLS was observed. Yield of giblet was proportionately higher in female. Dressing percentage was significantly better for both sexes on cage than the DLS. Significantly lower cost involved in feeding for producing 1 kg live weight gain under cage rearing with better feed conversion ratio (FCR). It may be opined that the best marketing age of the quails for meat purpose is at sixth weeks of age and cage system may be superior to deep litter rearing for optimum growth, carcass yields and economy.

Management of global issues and challenges requires global leaders. As can be seen from the earlier times, when the problems were localized, the quality of leadership was not an issue but times have changed with the arrival of liberalization & globalization. The volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity are nurtured for traditional leadership qualities and hold very little validity in the present context. Some leadership skills are enduring; but to be successful in the future, leaders also need an emerging set of ski/Is uniquely suited to dealing with the challenge of threshold decade, we are entering. Today's business and organizations are operating in unprotected transition. In the next decade, leaders will not just see the future, they will create it. But they will not be able to do it alone. The job of a leader is to encourage people to do the work up to their satisfaction level. This encouragement comes in the form of positive reinforcement which drives all positive growth. The ability to provide this positive reinforcement is one that should be noticed. This culture of leadership can be fostered by encouraging employees to assist with coaching and mentoring. Assessing, developing and rewarding leadership skills are a high priority among great organizations. When a person is given more responsibility, he needs to operate well leading others and navigate well the culture and policies of the organization. World-class organizations take a systematic and supportive approach to grooming potential leaders. They consider leadership skills to be critical to sustainable success, effectiveness, and achievement and winning. This paper focusses on some of important issues connected with the topic.
