Search Help

Search for Indian Science Abstracts records.. You can use Search History tab/page to view all your search(es) during a session.

  1. Go to the Current Limits section of the page to select a different timespan to search.
  2. Enter your search terms in one or more of the following search fields.
  3. To restrict your search, select one or more Document types.
  4. Click Search.

Document Type

Each article is categorized to a document type. This search allows the user to select a specific document type from a predefined list. Article will be fetched based on the selection made.

The search for a Document Type can also be combined with other search fields like Title, Author, Publication etc using the Boolean operators (AND, OR & NOT).

ISA comprises of various Document Types.

  • Article
  • Standard
  • Patent
  • Thesis


Title

Enter article title terms to limit your search to article titles.

Enter your search terms in any order. The product returns every record containing all your search terms. To look for an exact phrase, use quotation marks. Example: "Internet use by students of the Delhi University".

Enter one or more terms connected with Booleans (AND, OR and NOT).


Title Search Rules

  • MILK, Milk and milk returns the same results: case does not matter.
  • Gene* matches genetic, generic, generator, and general.

Using Boolean Search Operators

  • Plant protection (without quotation marks) is equivalent to the search plant OR protection.
  • Plant AND protect* finds records containing the words plant AND protection, protects, protected, and so on.
  • Plant OR protect finds records containing either plant OR protect or both words.

Journal Abbreviation

 

Enter your search terms in any order. The product returns every record containing all your search terms. Example: "Int J Syst Cybernetics Inf"

Enter one or more terms connected with Booleans (AND, OR, and NOT). Enter complete words and phrases or partial words and phrases using wildcard (*).


Journal Search Rules
  • MILK, Milk and milk returns the same results: case does not matter.
  • Gene* matches genetic, generic, generator, and general.

 


Author

Indian Science Abstract contains the names of all authors associated with Journal Articles

Enter the name of an author to search the Author(s) field within a record. Enter complete names or partial names using wildcards (*).


Guidelines for Entering Author Names

Format

Enter the last name first, followed by a space. You may also enter last names without initials. For example:

  • Singh M* finds Singh M, Singh MJ, Singh Manish, and so on.
  • Singh MA* finds Singh Mamta and Singh Manish.
  • Singh finds all authors with the last name Singh.

Case

Use upper, lower, or mixed case. For example, Singh (or singh) is the same as SINGH.

Wildcards

Enter a last name followed by an asterisk (*) to find all authors with that name. For example:

  • Singh * finds Singh A, Singh AS, Singh E, Singh EJ, and so on.
  • Singh finds the same names. It may also find additional records where Singh appears without any initials.

Boolean Search Operators

Separate two or more names by the search operators AND, OR, and NOT. For example:

  • Motwani S* AND Agarwal G* finds records of articles authored by both Motwani S and Agarwal N.
  • Motwani S* OR Agarwal N* finds records of articles authored by either Motwani S OR Agarwal N (or both Murthy S and Agarwal N).
  • Motwani S* NOT Agarwal N*  finds records in which Motwani S appears but not Agarwal N.

 



Keyword

Enter your search terms in any order. The product returns every record containing all your search terms. To look for an exact phrase, use quotation marks. Example: "Milk"

Enter one or more terms connected with Booleans (AND, OR, and NOT). Enter complete words and phrases or partial words and phrases using wildcard (%).


Keyword Search Rules

  • MILK, Milk and milk returns the same results: case does not matter.
  • Gene* matches genetic, generic, generator, and general.

Keyword Search Examples

  • "Genetic Engineering" finds records containing the exact phrase genetic engineering.
  • Genetic % find records containing the words "Genetic".

Affiliation

Search the Institution field by entering the name of an institution and/or place name from an author's address. Combine an Institution search with an Author search to broaden or narrow your search results.


Guidelines for Entering Institution Terms

Use wildcard (*) to search for variants of words.

Use Booleans (AND, OR, and NOT) to combine addresses to broaden or narrow search results.

For example, the search query IIT Delhi will retrieve records with this address in the Institution field:

IIT Delhi

IIT New Delhi

In the above case of Institution search, the words given in the search string looks for those records where IIT and Delhi appear in the same record but these two words not necessarily be adjacent.

To search for an exact match, put the search string within quotes as "IIT AND Delhi" will retrieve all of the records that have IIT and Delhi as adjacent words but not IIT New Delhi.

"IIT Delhi"

Only those records are retrieved which are exact match.



Genric/Geograpic

This search works in a similar way as Publication Name search. Example,

  • New Delhi - will search for exact phrase.
  • New* - will search for articles belonging to institutes situated in place starting from New. This type of search will be slower as compared to exact match.
