It is estimated that there had been five major extinctions of life on the Earth during Phanerozoic Eon, recording punctuations by catastrophes in the stream of biotic systems. From amongst such episodes the one at the Permian-Triassic Boundary (PTB) - about 250 millions years ago, was extremely disastrous for life in the sea, and to a certain extent on the land also. The distribution of palynomorphs across the PTB projects a high turnover in plant groups. The extinction in pteridophytic vegetation as depicted by fossil spore analysis is vivid and exhibitive because of their high incidences and superior quality of preservation in the sedimentary rocks. The spores respresenting lycopsids, sphenopsids and filicopsids disappear in steps during a short period in the upper reaches of Permian, just before the PTB; only a few species survive to cross over into the Triassic but at the same levels several new ones radiate. The behaviour of pteridophytic extinction, as reflected by spores, is more sensitive, subtle and systematic that those of gymnosperms. It is concluded that although it was a major die-off for pteridophytes at the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic Boundary, in any case it was not a catastrophic mass extinction and they were well adapted to survive the onslaught.

Chlamydospores are circular, double walled bodies bearing in some, dark coloured inclusions of unknown nature.

The bones are poorly preserved and fragmentary in nature, as a result of the prevailing high energy condition in the depositional basin. The size, shape and nature of the bones; palaeohistological studies under microscope as well as continental type of environment for the animals thriving, confirmed dinosaurian origin for these bones.

A new species of Leptarctus is described on the basis of a partial skull from the North American Miocene. The new species, Leptarctus desuii, has typical leptarctine characteristcs, including heavy zygomatic arches, well-developed hypocones on the fourth upper premolars, wide muzzle and broad skull. The third upper premolar differs from those of other known Leptarctus in having double cusps and a cingulum on the lingual side. Cranial and dental morphology suggests that Leptarctus had a less carnivorous diet than any other mustelid.

This nontherian triconodont mammal shows distinct dental morphological attributes which place it in the family Megazostrodontidae, the association of both nontherian and a number of therian mammals reported earlier from the Kota Formation undoubtedly points to a rapid diversification of the early mammals in the Early Jurassic. Remarkable similarity of this new taxon with other triconodont mammals points to a Pangaean distribution of these early mammals and supports the thesis that the continents were confluent at least up to the Early Jurassic and intercontinental migration was taking place.

Phoenicicaulon mahabalei gen. et sp. nov., a permineralized proximal part of the leaf (leaf sheath) of Phoenix has been described from the Deccan Intertrappean bed at Umaria, District Mandla, Madhya Pradesh, India. In cross section it appears as a shallow trough; rounded abaxially and lunate on the adaxial side. It is characterized with a central vascular regions with compact arrangement of vascular bundles. The petiole exhibits a unique type of vasculature in the central dorsiventral ridge region consisting of highly compact arrangement of fibrovascular bundles. Presence of both dorsal and ventral sclerenchyma, single large phloem, two wide metaxylem vessels in the fibrovascular bundle; abundance of fibre, diminutive and trace bundles suggest its resemblance with the proximal part of the leaf saxis (leaf sheath) of a pinnate palm Phoenix belonging to a monogeneric tribe Phoeniceae of subfamily Coryphoideae of Palmae (Arecaceae).

Morphological cladistic analyses have shown cetaceans to be most closely related to one or more mesonychians, a group of extinct, archiac ungulates, but molecular analyses have indicated that they are the sister group to hippopotamides. Cladistic analysis indicates that cetaceans are more closely related to artiodactyls than to any mesonychian. Cetaceans are not the sister group to (any mesonychians, nor to hippopotamides. Analysis stops short of identifying any particular artiodactyl family as the cetacean sister group and supports monophylyl of artiodactyls.

The occurrence of fossil leaves of five extant genera, viz., Dipterocarpus, Amoora, Bambusa, Bauhinia and Cassia have been reported in the Kasauli Formation of Himachal Pradesh. Among these, the first three genera are being reported for the first time from the Kasauli Formation. Besides, palm leaves showing affinities with tropical fan palms and legume leaflets have also been described under the artificial genera Amesoneuron and Leguminophyllum from these Pre-Siwalik sediments. Collectively, the fossil plants indicate that the area was occupied by a mixed lowland forest comprising moist-deciduous to evergreen elements. The presence of Dipterocarpus indicates that the age of Kasauli formation may not be older than Lower Miocene.

The small mammal fauna of the Indian Subcontinent underwent turnover of massive scale in early Miocene time. The archaic ctenodactyloid rodent assemblage known from Bugti, Sulaiman, and Ladakh deposits of early Miocene age was replaced in no more than two million years by a completely different fauna, different at the family and higher taxonomic levels. This scale of turnover is unheard of anywhere, at any time in earth history, except in the most catastrophic situations. Other small mammal groups participated in the turnover; the scale of change for large mammals is unstudied so far. Apparent diversity before and after the turnover is comparable. One lineage survived the event, although in reduced abundance as measured by fossils. This is the Fallomus-Diatomys clade of non-baluchimyine ctenodactyloids. This lineage endured the demise of the Bugti small mammal fauna, survived into early late Miocene time, and appeared sporadically in the Siwalik Group of rocks and elsewhere in Asia.

Morpholog of an elongated, cylindrical, oval or ovate, coenocytic plant fossil resembling sporogonium of Notothylas is reinterpreted and correlated now with an extant fresh water green alga Characiosophon lyengar. In extinct material the wall layer is present but non-cellular and is covered over by a thick mucilaginous sheath. The protoplast is divided into discrete units each with a chloroplast and the nucleus. Zoospores? and zoogameter? liberated through an apical pore. Aplanospores are also identified. A new name Characiosiphonites nipanica has been suggested for Sporangioceros nipanica and a reconstrution of the fossil plant is attmepted.

Detailed study of the coal microconstituents from Tatapani and Ramkola coalfields has revealed preservation of leaf sections, cork cells, microspores, megaspores, algae, resins, seeds and fruiting bodies. The completely intact leaf sections showing various tissue are reported here for the first time from Early Permian coals. Occurrence of such well preserved platn structures indicates that certain part of Indian Lower Gondwana coals could be partially of autochthonous in origin, while the Gondwana coals are known to have been formed by drifte plant matter, as also confirmed by the presence of distorted material. The palaeodepositional environment and nature of coal forming plant community has also been discussed.

A palynological study of the Early Miocene sediments of the Aizawl Basin, Mizoram is presented. The Auzawl Basin is part of the North-East India Dulte Formation (Surma Group: Bhuban Subgroup). The significant elements of the palynoassemblage are: Pteridacidites, Striatriletes, Polypodiisporites and Schizaeoisporites (pteridophytes), Compositoipollenites, Malvacearumpollis, Spinizonocolpites, Bombacacidites, Ctenolophonidites, Polyporina, Polyadopllenites, Graminidites (angiosperms). Cucurbitariacietes, Deicallaesporites and Phragmothyrites (fungi). The shale contains abundant plant remains and white gastropod shells. The laternation of shalesiltstonw, sandstone-claystone and the palynoflora suggest an Early Miocene age for studied sequence. Palaeocological interpretation based upon recent botanical affinities of the fossil spores and pollen highlights the presence indicates warm and humid climate. The composition of palynological assemblage suggests that Dulte Formation was deposited in deltaic condition rich in terrigeneous detritus where the fungal elements thrived.

The bifid, grapnel-like processes and apical prominence (acrolamella) found in some heterosporous Middle-Late Devonian spores closely resemble to the bifid processes of acritarchs, dinoflagellates, and some Cretaceous-Recent heterosporous aquatic ferns and the lycopsid Isoetes. The spongy wall ultrastructure of Protobarinophyton pennsylvanicum and Barinophyton citrulliforme shows some similarities to the megaspore wall structure of Azolla, Salvinia, Isoetes and Marsilea. The difference between the microspore and megaspore wall structure seen in B. citrulliforme and P. pennsylvanicum is comparable to the difference found in megaspore and microspore wall structure of Azolla, Salvinia and Isoetes. As the spongy wall structure found in heteroporous aquatic ferns provides buoyancy in an aquatic environment, the same may have been true for Protobarinophyton and Barinophyton and we suggest they probably were aquatic in the dispersal of their spores. These genera are among the oldest heterosporous megaspores known and we suggest that the earliest line of heterospory evolution may be linked to aquatic dispersal of spores and out crossing in their fertilization during the Middle Devonian. This paper is a review of relevant literature and information. We use these data to support our hypothesis that the reproduction of plants by heterospory has its origins in aquatic environments.

A fossil carbonised angiospermous fruit, Amberiwadiacarpo devgarhensis gen.et sp. nov. has been recovered for the first time from the Miocene sediments of Amberiwadi Village (Devgarh Taluk), Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra, India. Based on the morphological characters, the affinities of present fossil fruit have been suggested with the extant pantropical family Runiaceae and more particularly with the taxa Randia Houst. ex Linn. and Psychotris Linn. of this family.
