Gyarmati's variational principle, a significant development in the field of thermodynamics of irreversible processes, is used to study the thermodynamical effects of steady, laminar free and forced convection flow over a isothermal vertical flat plate with uniform suction and injection. The velocity and temperature distributions inside their boundary layer are considered as simple polynomial functions and the variational principle is formulated. The Euler-Langrange equations are reduced to coupled polynomial equations in terms of boundary layer thicknesses. The values of heat transfer (Nusselt number) and skin friction (shear stress) are calculated. The obtained analytical results are compared with known numerical solutions and it shows high order of accuracy.

An analysis is performed to study the effects of thermal radiation on unsteady free convective flow over a moving vertical plate with mass transfer in the presence of homogeneous first order chemical reaction. The fluid considered here is a gray, absorbing-emitting radiation but a non-scattering medium. The plate temperature is raised to T_w and the concentration level near the plate is raised linearly with time. The dimensionless governing equations are solved using the Laplace transform technique. The velocity and skin-friction are studied for different parameters like the radiation parameter, chemical reaction parameter, thermal Grashof number, mass Grashof number and time. It is observed that the velocity increases with decreasing radiation parameter or chemical reaction parameter.

The design was an orthogonal design. Constructed QQTSORD with lesser number of design points. A list of QQTSORD (both orthogonal and non-orthogonal) has been prepared for 3 ≤ k ≤ 7 and 2 ≤ v ≤ 5.

Attempt has been made to study the thermoelastic interactions without energy dissipation in a homogeneous and isotropic unbounded body with a spherical cavity when the cavity surface is subjected to a harmonically varying stress under adiabatic state condition. The closed form solutions for distributions of displacement, temperature and stresses are obtained. The solutions valid in the case of small frequency are deduced and the results are compared with the corresponding results obtained in other generalized thermoelasticity theories. Numerical results applicable to a copper-like material are also presented graphically and the nature of variations of the physical quantities with radial coordinates and with frequency of vibration is analyzed.
