Indian Science Abstracts

Scope

Indian Science Abstracts (ISA), a semi-monthly abstracting periodical was started by INSDOC (now NISCAIR) in January 1965, to abstract comprehensively and expeditiously the Indian scientific literature. ISA covers original scientific research work published in Indian journals including short communications, reviews and informative articles and research work. Proceedings of Indian conferences, theses and standard articles of popular nature are not included.

Layout

The abstracts are broadly classified according to Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) scheme and arranged under UDC number (along with subject headings) in the following order of category of entry: journal article, standard and thesis. The documents are grouped under 25 broad classes. In each category the entries are arranged alphabetically by the surname of first author and then by the journal title, and the year of publication. Entries are serially numbered. There are author, keyword, generic, and geographic indexes referring to the text by serial number of the entry and with titles in case of last two indexes. The keyword index terms are free-text terms rather than standard terms. A list of periodicals covered in the issue is provided, containing full name of journals along with the abbreviated title as used in the entries in parenthesis.

Bibliographical citations

Author- A maximum of ten authors’ names are given. In case of more than ten authors only the name of the first author is given followed by et al. Address of the author for communication is given in parenthesis after the names along with e-mail address, if any.

Title- The title is invariably given in English, irrespective of the language of the original article. However, in case of non-English titles transliteration of the same is rendered along with abbreviated form of the language in square brackets

Locus- The abbreviated title of the journal (based on the World List of Periodicals, 4th ed., London, Butterworths, 1963), is given first, followed by the year of publication, volume and issue number (issue number in parentheses), and pagination. Numbers of plates, charts, diagrams, tables and references are indicated within parenthesis after the inclusive pagination.

Abstract- Author abstract or summary or synopsis has been used as it is without any significant modification. Abstract may not be included in case the article does not have an author abstract.

From January 2020 onwards, Indian Science Abstracts has become completely online.
